Learn how to speak truth to power and connect with passionate people. We’ve got you covered. Our experts will teach you how to advocate for change in global health or any issue. SUMMARY:Igniting Hope - Inaugural Ottawa Civic Space Summit
DESCRIPTION:A Global Call to Protect What Makes Democracy Work \nAcross the world\, civic space is under attack—from digital surveillance and legal repression to the silencing of activists and shrinking public participation. Yet from the margins to the mainstream\, people are rising to defend the freedoms that make possible democracy\, human rights\, and justice. \nWhen civic space is protected\, communities thrive. It enables people to come together—through community associations\, farmers’ groups and cooperatives\, human rights organizations\, networks of health and education professionals\, climate champions and countless others working for a better world. The freedoms to gather\, speak up\, and organize are not abstract ideals—they are what make it possible to improve lives\, deliver essential services\, defend rights\, and build a more just and sustainable future. \nThe Ottawa Civic Space Summit is a new global platform to resist repression\, reclaim civic power\, and reimagine a more inclusive democratic future. This bold gathering will bring together civil society leaders\, civic space activists\, governments\, donors\, media\, academics\, and private sector allies to ignite hope and drive change. \n\n\n\n\nSummit Objectives \nDefend civic space as a cornerstone of democracy\, rights\, justice and sustainable development. \nCatalyze global momentum and political will to invest in and protect civic freedoms as foundational for social progress across all dimensions of sustainable development. \nReclaim civic space by strengthening collective resistance to its repression and fostering collaboration. \nFoster partnerships among governments\, civil society\, media\, academia\, and the private sector to counter the global rollback of civic space. Elevate the leadership\, voices\, and agency of youth\, women\, Indigenous peoples\, refugees and displaced people\, racialized communities\, LGBTQI+ persons\, and other marginalized groups. \nReimagine civic space to chart inclusive futures grounded in learning\, creativity\, and collective action. Advance transformative research\, innovative tools\, and coordinated strategies that respond to past and present challenges—while inspiring renewed vision\, resilience\, and inclusive civic renewal. \nWhat’s at Stake—and What We’ll Explore \nThe Ottawa Civic Space Summit will explore how civic space enables progress across all sectors—from gender equality\, climate action\, and racial justice to education\, health\, economic prosperity\, and humanitarian response. In a world facing growing crises and polarization\, civic space remains essential to our collective ability to organize\, respond\, and reimagine. \nDiscussions will examine the threats we face today—from digital surveillance and legal repression to disinformation and declining public trust—and the global forces behind them. \nTogether\, we’ll spotlight solutions: stronger solidarity across borders\, inclusive movements\, and bold approaches to safeguarding civic space in multilateral systems\, fragile contexts\, and emerging democracies alike. \nThrough this lens\, participants will engage with urgent questions: \n\nHow do we resist the shrinking of civic space across sectors and geographies?\nHow can donors\, governments\, and communities better fund and protect civic actors—including those in humanitarian and conflict-affected contexts?\nWhat role does civic space play in shaping inclusive economies and democratic renewal?\nHow can we centre intersectionality—across race\, gender\, age\, and Indigenous rights—in efforts to reclaim civic power?\n\nThese conversations will unfold through creative and participatory formats designed to foster deep reflection\, cross-cultural exchange\, connection\, and collective commitment. \nInformed by the latest research and grounded in frontline experience\, the summit will bring together global voices and visionary leaders to share ideas\, build alliances\, and explore concrete pathways to strengthen civic space around the world. \nAttend here!

SUMMARY:Love at First Sight in Toronto!
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE EXHIBITION: \nIf a photo speaks 1\,000 words\, these speak 1\,001. Love at First Sight is not a showcase of technical expertise in composition\, light\, or technique. \nThis exhibition features photos by our Tanzanian\, Peruvian\, and Nepali eye care patients after their sight was restored with cataract surgery or glasses. \nEach photographer was handed a camera and asked to capture what they loved and missed seeing most. \nThese moving images celebrate universal human values and the simple pleasures of family\, friends\, and the beauty in our daily lives. \nWhat do people want to see most when they regain their sight? Love at First Sight offers an intimate answer—through the eyes of former patients who captured what they missed most. \nProceeds from print sales will go directly toward providing sight-restoring care in underserved communities. \nLocation: Arta Gallery\, Distillery District\, 14 Distillery Lane\, Toronto\, ON\, M5A 3C4 \n416-364-2782 — www.artagallery.ca \nFor gallery hours\, please click here! \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis exhibition is running at the Arta Gallery from May 7 to May 10\, 2026.

SUMMARY:Expanding Neonatal and Pediatric Surgical Care in Conflict-Affected Settings: The MSF Experience
DESCRIPTION:On behalf of the UBC Branch for Global Surgical Care and the Institute for Global Health at BC Children’s and Women’s Hospital (IGH-CW)\, we invite you to attend a talk on “Expanding Neonatal and Pediatric Surgical Care in Conflict-Affected Settings: The MSF Experience” featuring Dr. Shahrzad Joharifard and Dr. Jean-Pierre Létoquart. \nWhen: Wednesday\, May 27\, 2026\, 7:00 – 8:00 AM \nWhere: BC Children’s Hospital TACC – Rooms T4-546 A&B + virtual \nIn many conflict-affected settings\, children comprise the majority of the population\, yet neonatal and pediatric surgical care remains largely absent from humanitarian surgical priorities. While emergency surgical programs have expanded globally\, children with congenital conditions and other complex surgical diseases often remain without access to specialized surgical\, anesthesia\, and perioperative care\, resulting in preventable disability\, chronic morbidity\, and death. \nIn this talk\, pediatric surgeon Shahrzad Joharifard and longtime MSF-France surgical advisor Jean-Pierre Létoquart discuss ongoing efforts within Médecins Sans Frontières to expand access to pediatric surgical care in some of the world’s most resource-constrained settings. Through clinical cases and field experience\, they explore the challenges of delivering complex neonatal and pediatric surgical care in environments with limited anesthesia\, nursing\, ICU\, and follow-up infrastructure\, and consider what ethical\, sustainable pediatric surgical care should look like in humanitarian medicine. \nAttend here!

SUMMARY:Charity Compliance Webinar Series (Spring 2026)
DESCRIPTION:The Canadian Muslim Public Affairs Council (CMPAC)\, and Cooperation Canada are pleased to invite you to participate in an upcoming three-part Charity Compliance Webinar Series\, delivered in partnership with the Charities Directorate of the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA)\, and sponsored by Human Concern International (HCI). \nThis series is designed to support registered charities in strengthening their understanding of compliance obligations under the Income Tax Act (ITA). Recognizing that most compliance challenges stem from uncertainty rather than intent\, these sessions will take an education-first approach\, providing clear\, practical guidance tailored to organizations at different levels of experience. The series is delivered by senior CRA officials in-person in Ottawa with an option to join virtually. French translation will be provided virtually. \nWhat to expect:  \nAcross three sessions\, participants will receive step-by-step guidance on key compliance requirements\, with each session building in complexity: \nSession 1: Maintaining Charitable Registration: Core Obligations (Level 1) \nThis session will explain what charities need to know to maintain their registration with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). It will provide an overview of the CRA’s Charities Directorate\, key registration requirements with a focus on books and records and filing the T3010\, common compliance issues\, and tools to support charities in their work. \nSession 2: Receipting and Fundraising: Requirements for Registered Charities (Level 2) \nThis session will provide information and resources on gifting\, receipting\, and key fundraising considerations for registered charities. Specifically\, the session will focus on the requirements for issuing official donation receipts and outline key fundraising rules. \nSession 3: Complex Compliance Obligations for Registered Charities (Level 3) \nThis session will examine more complex compliance obligations for registered charities. It will cover requirements related to public policy dialogue and development activities\, making grants to non‑qualified donees\, directed giving\, and operating internationally or in areas with security concerns. The session will highlight key compliance risks and provide guidance to help charities navigate these activities in accordance with Canada Revenue Agency requirements. \nEach session will include a moderated Q&A\, providing an opportunity to engage directly with CRA representatives and seek clarification on general compliance questions. \nImportant Details: \nTime: 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. \nFormat: hybrid (in person & online) \nLocation: Human Concern International head office 877 Shefford Rd\, Gloucester\, ON K1J 6X7 \nDuration: 60-90 minutes each session \nAttend here!
