DESCRIPTION:Join us on Wednesday\, April 1st\, as the AVA Webinar Series presents Engaging Community on MMIWG+ Prevention in Highway of Tears Country\, featuring Dr. Jacqueline Holler and Sara Heembrock from the University of Northern British Columbia. \nWednesday\, April 1st\, 2026 \n2 – 3:30pm EDT \nThe term “Highway of Tears” is globally synonymous with the issue of missing and murdered Indigenous women\, girls\, and gender minorities (MMIWG+)\, but the region has also been the site of powerful advocacy and engagement for change. The Highway of Tears Symposium of 2006 spotlighted the issue and culminated in 33 recommendations for change in Northern BC. This webinar presents results of ongoing engagement and research on MMIWG+ prevention among Carrier Sekani Family Services\, the Northern Feminist Institute for Research and Evaluation\, and communities and agencies in North-Central British Columbia. Since 2023\, the current research partnership has conducted research and engaged community members along the Highway of Tears to assess both progress on prevention and ongoing gaps. This webinar introduces the research project and its findings in advance of the 20th Anniversary Highway of Tears Symposium to be held in Prince George\, BC in April 2026. \nAbout the Speakers \nDr. Jacqueline Holler is Professor of Women’s & Gender Studies and History at the University of Northern British Columbia and a member of the leadership team at the Northern Feminist Institute for Research and Evaluation. \nSara Heembrock is a Master of Education (Counselling) student at the University of Northern British Columbia with experience working alongside Indigenous communities across student services\, housing\, holistic wellness\, and social services in Northern British Columbia. DESCRIPTION:Join us on Wednesday\, March 25th as the AVA Webinar Series presents Recognizing Risk: Assessing Family Violence in Family Litigation\, featuring Dr. Lisa Heslop from the Centre for Research & Education on Violence Against Women and Children (CREVAWC) \nWednesday\, April 15th\, 2026 \n2 – 3:30pm EDT \nScreening for family violence (FV) is the first step in keeping parents who have experienced FV and their children safer. This talk will begin with an overview of why family legal professionals should screen for FV\, what holds us back and what screening tools will help standardize the process. Moving beyond screening\, Dr. Heslop will introduce a new online assessment guide––the e-SAFeR––that is designed to help you create parenting plan recommendations that account for FV and forefront the safety of the children and the parent who experienced FV. The e-SAFeR will guide you in your assessment of each element of the best interests of the children––according with the federal or provincial/territorial statue you choose––including the nature\, severity and frequency of FV\, coercive control\, the impact of FV on the parent who experienced FV and their children\, as well as assessing change in the parent who engaged in FV. \nAbout the Speaker \nDr. Lisa Heslop is a research partner at the Centre for Research and Education on Violence Against Women and Children (CREVAWC)\, Western University. Lisa co-leads initiatives at CREVAWC related to family violence and family law and currently co-leads the Awareness to Action\, Moving from screening and assessment to developing appropriate parenting plans after family violence in the family justice system. Lisa has a doctorate degree developmental psychology from the University of Toronto. She is the co-author of articles and book chapters related to gender-based violence and its impact; trauma and violence informed practice; and the criminalization of persons with mental illness. She is consultant at Navigating Onward\, London Family Court Clinic and a member of the Clinical Panel of the Office of the Children’s Lawyer. \nAttend here!

DESCRIPTION:WHAT IS CAMPAIGN SCHOOL?\n\n\nThis program is designed to equip women\, Two Spirit\, and gender-diverse individuals with the skills\, knowledge\, and resources needed to run for political office in Canada. This module will focus on municipal elections as we prepare for upcoming races across the country. Equal Voice is a multi-partisan organization\, and participants will have the opportunity to learn from elected officials and experts representing all political parties and levels of government.\nThis program consists of 4 online sessions including a mix of group exercises\, guest speakers\, and networking opportunities with other leaders from across Canada. \nEach session is approximately 2 hours for a total of 8 hours of learning over 2 weeks. DESCRIPTION:This online course provides practical guidance on chlorination for safe drinking water in emergency settings\, with a focus on accurate dosage calculation and field application. Participants will explore key concepts such as free\, combined\, and residual chlorine\, and the critical factors to consider before chlorinating water. \nThrough step-by-step instruction and applied exercises\, learners will use the Horrocks’ Test to determine appropriate chlorine doses based on water quality conditions. The course also introduces methods for measuring turbidity\, pH\, and chlorine levels\, and addresses common operational challenges encountered in the field. DESCRIPTION:Join us on Wednesday\, April 29th\, as the AVA Webinar Series presents Basic Income and Gender-Based Violence: Exploring the Transformative Potential of a Guaranteed Livable Basic Income to Support Safety and Autonomy\, featuring Jennie Pearson and Moss from the Basic Income Youth Collective. \nWednesday\, April 29th\, 2026 \n2 – 3:30pm EDT \nThis session provides an accessible introduction into the world of basic income and what its implementation could mean for people impacted by or at-risk of gender-based violence. Participants will gain insights into the connections between basic income advocacy and anti-violence and gender-equity work\, and will be encouraged to consider the impacts of basic income for supporting people’s safety and autonomy. \nAbout the Speakers \nJennie Pearson\, PhD (she/her) is a community-based researcher and Postdoctoral Fellow at Simon Fraser University. Her research focuses on sex workers’ mutual aid practices and community care models across physical and digital spaces. She is also a member of the Basic Income Youth Collective. Her interest in basic income stems from her research and organizing for sex worker rights\, acknowledging the intersecting impacts of criminalization and poverty on sex workers’ health\, safety and wellbeing. \nMoss is a Guyanese and Peruvian genderqueer person based in Tkaronto/Toronto. During the COVID-19 pandemic\, they became more engaged in social justice\, volunteering with Meals on Wheels and learning about urban accessibility and transportation. \nTheir growing understanding of systemic inequities strengthened their belief in basic income. Moss now builds community among disabled peers\, writes\, and studies social service work at Seneca Polytechnic\, hoping to advance queer liberation\, disability justice\, and youth rights in their future career. \nAttend here!
