SUMMARY:Introduction to Gender Equality and Global Health
DESCRIPTION:Gender equality is not only a fundamental human right\, but a necessary foundation for a healthy\, peaceful\, and prosperous world. A person’s gender affects their ability to reduce their exposure to risks of poor health\, access healthcare\, adopt health-seeking behaviours\, and achieve good health and well-being. To be effective\, global health programs must adopt a gender integration approach that systematically works to reduce gender-related barriers to good health and well-being and advance gender equality and women’s and girls’ empowerment. \nThis introductory course takes a participatory approach to building global health practitioners’ skills to design\, implement\, monitor\, and evaluate gender transformative programmes. The course will follow a typical project cycle\, taking participants through key entry points for gender integration at each stage. Faculty from Canadian and global private and public sector institutions (e.g.\, academia\, NGOs\, government) will share their real-world experiences in gender integration in global health programmes\, and case studies will cover various sub-sectors\, such as immunization\, nutrition\, and malaria. In addition to gender analysis\, participants will learn how to apply an intersectional lens to gender-transformative approaches\, enhancing their understanding and promotion of social inclusion and the social determinants of health. DESCRIPTION:On behalf of the UBC Branch for Global Surgical Care and the Institute for Global Health at BC Children’s and Women’s Hospital (IGH-CW)\, we invite you to attend a talk on “Expanding Neonatal and Pediatric Surgical Care in Conflict-Affected Settings: The MSF Experience” featuring Dr. Shahrzad Joharifard and Dr. Jean-Pierre Létoquart. \nWhen: Wednesday\, May 27\, 2026\, 7:00 – 8:00 AM \nWhere: BC Children’s Hospital TACC – Rooms T4-546 A&B + virtual \nIn many conflict-affected settings\, children comprise the majority of the population\, yet neonatal and pediatric surgical care remains largely absent from humanitarian surgical priorities. While emergency surgical programs have expanded globally\, children with congenital conditions and other complex surgical diseases often remain without access to specialized surgical\, anesthesia\, and perioperative care\, resulting in preventable disability\, chronic morbidity\, and death. \nIn this talk\, pediatric surgeon Shahrzad Joharifard and longtime MSF-France surgical advisor Jean-Pierre Létoquart discuss ongoing efforts within Médecins Sans Frontières to expand access to pediatric surgical care in some of the world’s most resource-constrained settings. DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, May 27th as the AVA Webinar Series presents The SPARX Program: Promoting Healthy Relationships and Preventing Dating Violence by Raising Awareness Among Youth\, Caregivers\, and Professionals\, featuring Pénélope Allard-Cobeto and Émilie Marien from  SPARX for Positive Romantic and Intimate Relationships. \nWednesday\, May 27th\, 2026 \n2 – 3:30pm EDT \nThe SPARX Program is a comprehensive prevention initiative designed to promote healthy intimate relationships among youth and to prevent dating violence. The program includes several components tailored to key audiences. Two components are directed specifically at youth: a youth ambassador committee\, created by and for teenagers\, and interactive sexuality education workshops that focus on defining healthy relationships and preventing dating violence. Another component supports caregivers by providing practical tools and resources to help them confidently discuss healthy relationships and dating violence with the young people in their care. The final component focuses on professionals working with youth\, offering training to strengthen their sense of self efficacy in addressing these topics\, facilitating workshops\, and responding appropriately to disclosures of violence. This webinar will provide an overview of the four components of the SPARX program and share key findings from their evaluation. \nAbout the Speakers \nPenelope Allard‑Cobetto holds a bachelor’s degree in criminology and a master’s degree in sexology. For the past three years\, she has worked with the Canada Research Chair in Interpersonal Traumas and Resilience as the coordinator of the SPARX Project. In this role\, she collaborates with adolescents\, caregivers\, and professionals to assess their needs\, develops tools based on their input\, implements targeted initiatives\, and gathers feedback to continuously improve the program\, with the goal of identifying effective ways to promote healthy relationships and prevent dating violence. \nÉmilie Marien holds a bachelor’s degree in science high school teaching and a bachelor’s degree in sexology. Dedicated to promoting sex education among youth\, she now works as a research support agent for the Canada Research Chair in Interpersonal Traumas and Resilience. She offers trainings to facilitate the SPARX program\, supports the youth ambassador component and plays a key role in the social media campaign. SUMMARY:At the Heart of Democracy
DESCRIPTION:Register for Dignity in Dialogue’s upcoming session on May 28th from 10:30 AM- 12:00 PM EDT.  \nBuilding on this year’s IDAHOBIT theme\, At the Heart of Democracy\, this session will examine the coordinated challenge anti-rights actors pose to LGBTIQ+ movements\, democratic institutions\, and civic space worldwide. Over the past decade\, these actors have become increasingly networked\, well-resourced\, and strategic: adapting global anti-rights agendas to local political and legal contexts\, building alliances with governments and political actors\, and systematically targeting international human rights frameworks. \nFor Canadian civil society organizations\, understanding the structure\, strategies\, and regional dimensions of these movements is essential to developing effective solidarity\, advocacy\, and protection responses. This session is designed to strengthen that understanding by exploring how anti-rights actors operate across contexts\, how their influence shapes policy and public discourse\, and what this means for organizations working to advance human rights\, inclusion\, and democratic participation. \nWe are pleased to welcome Madhura Chakraborty (Independent Researcher and Queer Feminist Activist) and Joy Asasira (Reproductive Health and Gender Specialist) as guest speakers for this conversation. \nThe discussion will be moderated by Odette McCarthy (Executive Director at Equitas – International Centre for Human Rights Education). \nThere will be simultaneous EN-FR and FR-EN interpretation. \nRegister here!
