SUMMARY:What Women Want: Improving Global Maternal Health Through Policy Advocacy
DESCRIPTION:Maternity Today is presenting a panel discussion on Improving Global Maternal Health through Policy Advocacy. Don’t miss out on this powerhouse presentation with leaders from gender equality\, women’s health\, midwifery\, and human rights organizations. The event will include guest speakers from : Canadian Partnership for Women’s and Children’s Health( CanWaCH)\, White Ribbon Alliance Global (WRA) \, Canadian Center for Women’s Empowerment (CCWE)\, International Confederation of Midwives (ICM)\, and Canadian Association of Midwives .Our theme is to promote women’s maternal health by engaging leaders in discussing policies that affect women and their well-being . The Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted the disparities in accessing health\, and among the vulnerable and marginalized\, are women who have been disproportionately affected by the pandemic. This panel will also discuss the importance of midwives as essential health care providers to women. \nRecently\, Maternity Today joined the global efforts with ICM and WRA\, to survey midwives as ambassadors for women’s health. The goal of the survey is to ask midwives about what they want and need to serve women in their care and for themselves as midwives. \nWhy empower midwives? Because this is What Women Want! \nIn 2019\, the What Women Want (WWW) Campaign was launched with the goal of addressing the needs of women and girls in the developing world. Findings were used to develop policy agendas and the implementation of reproductive and maternal health services. The top request that came from WWW was the demand for more midwives and better-supported nurses. As a result\, the What Women Want: Midwives’ Voices\, Midwives’ Demands campaign was launched to better understand the needs of midwives. \nA global survey was launched to amplify the multitudinous voices of Midwives. The information that is gathered will be categorized\, analyzed\, and reported in May 2022 on the International Day of the Midwife. The reported information will be further used to advocate for policy change so Midwives across the globe will receive all that they need to help mothers and children. \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Think Women: discussing women’s economic security!
DESCRIPTION:COVID-19 has amplified the existing economic vulnerabilities that women face while giving rise to the rate of unemployment and continuing the gender wage gap. The need for a feminist economy has never been more apparent than now. Think Women: Peer Network for a Feminist Economy will support a feminist response and recovery from the current impacts of COVID-19 by implementing a systemic change to support the inclusion of women’s voices\, particularly equity-seeking groups\, in the planning for economic recovery.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe goal of Think Women: Peer Network for a Feminist Economy is to address systemic barriers by advancing inclusive policies and practices\, encouraging more equitable and effective sharing of resources\, increasing networks and collaboration to accelerate systemic change\, and supporting the positive distribution of authority\, voices\, and decision-making power to support women’s equality. \nWhat you can expect during this national conversation\nAn opportunity to network and share your organization’s experiences and the challenges it faces during the pandemic and learn about the experiences of other organizations. In a group discussion\, we will reflect on how COVID-19 impacted the nonprofit sector and the demographics they serve. This meeting will be highly collaborative and participant-based. WEC facilitators will ensure that the space that holds this conversation is engaging\, insightful\, and safe! SUMMARY:Chat and Connect: Being BIPOC and the Academic and Career Journey
DESCRIPTION:This month’s Chat and Connect session aims to support the educational and career trajectories of our racialized members\, especially first-generation Canadians. \nOur Chat & Connect guest\, Meseret Haileyesus\, is an accomplished global health expert\, multi-award-winning economic justice and health equity advocate\, thought leader\, philanthropist\, change-maker\, and social entrepreneur. \nShe is the CEO of the Canadian Centre for Women’s Empowerment\, the only Canadian organization addressing economic injustice with a keen interest in addressing systemic barriers and other challenges that prevent women and girls from fully realizing their economic rights. Meseret works to influence public policy and legislation decisions that support marginalized women to make a successful transition to economic independence in Canada. She seeks to fill the gaps for the development of new approaches to address economic injustice by reviewing existing systems\, policies\, legislation and procedures in Canada. \nShe is involved with various strategies to inform the federal government of Canada such as National Financial Literacy Strategy\, National Gender-Based Violence Strategy to include economic justice. She also serves on the Board of Directors at Centertown Health Center\, End FGM Canada Network\, and Advisor for Various Anti-Racism Community Initiatives to contribute to a system that meets the needs of mental health challenges faced by Black youth\, and their families in Canada. \nMeseret works have been featured in media across Canada including CBC\, CTV\, Yahoo Finance\, Canadian Center for Policy Alternative\, Globes and Mail\, Healthy Debate\, Toronto Sun\, Toronto Star\, Ottawa Citizen\, and National Observer. In 2020\, her project was recognised by 27 major cities’ mayors across Canada and at the House of Commons. \nHer passion for global health and health equity has led her to spend over 16 years\, working with various national and international non-profit organizations on dozens of projects centred on issues of HIV/AIDS prevention\, public health research\, and health policy to take action to advance social justice initiatives. Past community involvement includes the Alberta Community Council for HIV/AIDS\, Alberta Health Services\, University of Alberta\, Alberta Women Entrepreneurs\, Laurentian University\, Canadian Network for Society Network\, Women in Edmonton\, City of All Women Initiative (Ottawa)\, World Bank Gender Equality and Diversity in Customs & UN Women- Women’s Economic Empowerment\, UNICEF\, African Medical Research Foundation\, Jhpiego-\, Johns Snow Institute\, CARE Canada & Ethiopiaid Canada. \nMeseret worked on public health programs\, particularly on Women’s Child Health reproductive health and economic rights\, where she had the profound pleasure of assisting many marginalized pregnant African women through the amazing journey of pregnancy\, childbirth\, and new motherhood. Meseret Ambassador for World Pulse and Meaningful Business\, a global organization dedicated to addressing racial and economic injustice to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals. These experiences combined with her lifelong commitment to gender equality and women’s health and well-being led Meseret to found Maternity Today\, an international non-profit organization that strengthens maternal\, child and newborn health through superior advocacy\, research\, and education in developing countries. \nBeyond her social justice and public health involvement\, Meseret is also the owner of Nacre Organics\, and an advocate with David Suzuki Foundation for the promotion of nontoxic green personal care products\, “biodegradable plastic-waste free planet” and zero-waste packaging. As a health and wellness industry entrepreneur\, she is also a program advisor at Algonquin College’s Esthetician and Spa program. \nShe is also one of the founders of KMH Trading SC\, the first multiuser health service mobile application in Ethiopia that plays a vital role in addressing the day-to-day health care services challenges along with innovators from USA\, UK\, Canada and Ethiopia. \nShe is a proud mother of one beautiful daughter who inspires and motivates her every day to continue her work towards a more just\, fair\, and inclusive society that protects and advances the well-being of women and girls. \nWe hope to see you at our Chat & Connect on Thursday\, February 24\, 2022\, at 7 p.m. ET! \nREGISTER HERE
