SUMMARY:Road to Recovery for Routine Immunization: Lessons from COVID-19
DESCRIPTION:The COVID-19 pandemic has severely affected the routine immunization of children. Most countries experienced drops in childhood vaccination coverage rates\, erasing decades of progress. Lifesaving vaccination campaigns were postponed in 50 countries in 2021\, putting around 228 million\, mostly children\, at risk of vaccine preventable diseases such as measles\, yellow fever\, and polio. \nAfter over two years of the pandemic and ongoing efforts to restore\, maintain and improve immunization programmes\, what are the key lessons that we have learned? SUMMARY:Using New Country Data on Unintended Pregnancy and Abortion Incidence for Maximum Advocacy and Policy Impact
DESCRIPTION:The Guttmacher Institute\, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Human Reproduction Programme (HRP) recently released new estimates of unintended pregnancy and abortion incidence for 150 countries. This includes 87 countries that never have had reliable evidence on these measures from official statistics or scientific studies. This new study illuminates major disparities in access to sexual and reproductive health care between countries of all income levels around the world. \nThe Guttmacher Institute will hold a 60-minute virtual briefing on Wednesday\, 17 May\, 2022 \, at 10:00 a.m. ET to highlight key findings of the study\, related policy recommendations and the use of the new evidence for advocacy purposes. \nThe discussion will be moderated by Guttmacher’s Vice President for Research\, Dr. Aletha Akers\, and will feature María Mercedes Vivas\, Executive Director of Fundación Oriéntame in Colombia. DESCRIPTION:From mangrove forests in coastal villages to green roofs on city skyscrapers\, nature-based solutions are one of the most powerful – and most underutilized – approaches to mitigate and adapt to climate change. By protecting\, restoring\, and sustainably managing ecosystems\, nature-based solutions offer the potential to reduce climate related risks and address the biodiversity crisis\, while delivering social and economic benefits to those living within these ecosystems. \nOn June 23\, Aga Khan Foundation Canada is pleased to host Nature-based Solutions\, Climate Resilience\, and the SDGs\, welcoming a panel of experienced practitioners who aim to reduce climate risks\, advance climate resilience\, and support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Panelists will discuss the imperative of using nature-based solutions to address climate change and biodiversity loss and share examples of ongoing initiatives and available resources that organizations can draw on to strengthen their own work in this area. \nIn addition to the panel discussion\, participants will be invited to participate in breakout groups led by the speakers. SUMMARY:Choice\, Voice and Autonomy: Women’s political leadership for health in a fragile world
DESCRIPTION:Women’s political leadership is critical for achieving the SDGs\, including improving gender equity and SRHR in UHC outcomes. \n\n\nJoin us for a virtual discussion tackling these issues on the sidelines of the UN High-level Political Forum. \n\n\nThere is no other way to put it: Trends in new policies on healthcare for women and adolescent girls are regressive. This already underfunded area is being further deprioritized in the budgets of donors and governments.  At a time when compounding\, ongoing crises are deeply affecting the progress made toward women’s empowerment and the health of communities\, another\, quieter war is waging against fundamental rights around the world. Women and girls are being cut off from education\, work and access to essential primary health care services. \n\n\nThese reversals are happening just as the world saw the number of girls in school increasing\, and the number of child marriages and deaths decreasing across the board. Response to the global pandemic brought into focus how fragile these gains were\, and how women are positioned at the frontlines of the home and their communities. SUMMARY:The History of Women’s Pain Management and Gender Bias in Medicine
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, Medical Herstory offers a historical perspective into how gender bias influences health experiences and medical care\, with a focus on women’s pain (including childbirth). Through patient experience case studies\, interactive trivia\, and group discussions\, we will address the implicit and institutional biases that have historically influenced women’s experiences of seeking and receiving care\, and explore how to overcome these barriers. \nThe workshop will include discussions on racism\, sexism\, medical dismissal and discrimination\, in addition to an exploration of societal and gender norms and factors influencing women’s health. \nThis workshop has been organised by the museum’s Equality\, Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Group. \nFacilitators \nMedical Herstory is an award-winning international non-profit on a mission to eliminate sexism\, shame\, and stigma from health experiences. We are dedicated to raising awareness on gender health inequity through storytelling\, undoing stigma\, patient advocacy\, and medical education. DESCRIPTION:On August 12th\, 2022\, the 1st IDEAS for Gender Equality Community Building Event will be held in beautiful downtown Toronto\, Ontario (in-person as well as virtually). \nTo begin\, a panel discussion will spotlight Multi-stakeholder Partnerships that have taken bold steps to promote gender equality through inclusion\, diversity\, equity and access solutions.
