SUMMARY:Using New Country Data on Unintended Pregnancy and Abortion Incidence for Maximum Advocacy and Policy Impact
DESCRIPTION:The Guttmacher Institute\, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Human Reproduction Programme (HRP) recently released new estimates of unintended pregnancy and abortion incidence for 150 countries. This includes 87 countries that never have had reliable evidence on these measures from official statistics or scientific studies. This new study illuminates major disparities in access to sexual and reproductive health care between countries of all income levels around the world. \nThe Guttmacher Institute will hold a 60-minute virtual briefing on Wednesday\, 17 May\, 2022 \, at 10:00 a.m. ET to highlight key findings of the study\, related policy recommendations and the use of the new evidence for advocacy purposes. \nThe discussion will be moderated by Guttmacher’s Vice President for Research\, Dr. Aletha Akers\, and will feature María Mercedes Vivas\, Executive Director of Fundación Oriéntame in Colombia. DESCRIPTION:From mangrove forests in coastal villages to green roofs on city skyscrapers\, nature-based solutions are one of the most powerful – and most underutilized – approaches to mitigate and adapt to climate change. By protecting\, restoring\, and sustainably managing ecosystems\, nature-based solutions offer the potential to reduce climate related risks and address the biodiversity crisis\, while delivering social and economic benefits to those living within these ecosystems. \nOn June 23\, Aga Khan Foundation Canada is pleased to host Nature-based Solutions\, Climate Resilience\, and the SDGs\, welcoming a panel of experienced practitioners who aim to reduce climate risks\, advance climate resilience\, and support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Panelists will discuss the imperative of using nature-based solutions to address climate change and biodiversity loss and share examples of ongoing initiatives and available resources that organizations can draw on to strengthen their own work in this area. \nIn addition to the panel discussion\, participants will be invited to participate in breakout groups led by the speakers. SUMMARY:Choice\, Voice and Autonomy: Women’s political leadership for health in a fragile world
DESCRIPTION:Women’s political leadership is critical for achieving the SDGs\, including improving gender equity and SRHR in UHC outcomes. \n\n\nJoin us for a virtual discussion tackling these issues on the sidelines of the UN High-level Political Forum. \n\n\nThere is no other way to put it: Trends in new policies on healthcare for women and adolescent girls are regressive. This already underfunded area is being further deprioritized in the budgets of donors and governments.  At a time when compounding\, ongoing crises are deeply affecting the progress made toward women’s empowerment and the health of communities\, another\, quieter war is waging against fundamental rights around the world. Women and girls are being cut off from education\, work and access to essential primary health care services. \n\n\nThese reversals are happening just as the world saw the number of girls in school increasing\, and the number of child marriages and deaths decreasing across the board. Response to the global pandemic brought into focus how fragile these gains were\, and how women are positioned at the frontlines of the home and their communities. Lucky Iron Fish offers a novel tool for iron deficiency anemia and provides in-depth training and resources for program implementation. Over the past 4 years\, Lucky Iron Fish has partnered with organizations including CARE\, Action Against Hunger\, World Vision and Catholic Relief Services and has worked with partners to deliver programs in Benin\, Tanzania\, Senegal\, Guatemala\, Peru and India. Most recently\, Lucky Iron Fish has conducted and completed several trials and pilots and received funding from Canadian Fund for Local Initiatives (India) and The Fund for Innovation and Transformation (with CARE in Benin). Please join us for an interactive 1 hour session\, space will be provided for questions and discussion.\n\nAbout the company: Lucky Iron Fish is a Canadian social enterprise and B-Corp dedicated to preventing and addressing iron deficiency around the globe. The economic impact of iron deficiency is clear\, contributing to a over $70B annual global GDP loss\, and an estimated 20% decrease in women’s earning potential. Impacting mostly women and children\, iron deficiency causes nausea\, fatigue\, fainting\, headaches\, and hair loss. Iron deficiency also restricts cognitive and physical development in children. To address this massive global challenge\, Lucky Iron Fish created the Lucky Iron Fish (and Leaf). The Fish/Leaf is a culturally sensitive\, scientifically proven innovation to fortify meals with natural iron and reduce the prevalence of iron deficiency anemia. Clinical work on the Fish has been published by independent academic institutions to demonstrate its safety\, efficacy\, and impact. DESCRIPTION:Engage with the Population Council and invited experts from UN-Habitat\, PSI\, and the African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) in a panel discussion regarding urban disparities in SRHR\, and the challenges and opportunities for leveraging the urban context to tackle these disparities. \nSexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) are a critical component of ensuring that all people\, and particularly women and girls\, lead healthy and productive lives. Significant inequities in key SRHR outcomes are observed across many demographic and social indicators\, including urban residence. Urban environments and populations are extremely diverse with regard to their socio-demographic makeup\, economic status\, access to key infrastructure and services\, social norms and preferences. While a growing body of research highlights this variation in SRHR outcomes within and across cities\, a focus on individual level characteristics fails to capture a fully comprehensive view of urban SRHR risks and needs. \nOur webinar will convene experts to discuss ways to improve SRHR outcomes in the urban context\, specifically neighborhood or structural challenges\, measurement and data issues\, and current gaps to help define a comprehensive research agenda moving forward. \n\nRegister here
