SUMMARY:Advancing SRHR through safe spaces in the OPT and Ghana - Women Deliver 2023 Virtual Conference Event
DESCRIPTION:Please note: To attend this session\, you must register for the Women Deliver Virtual Conference. \nInterested in learning more about creating safe spaces for sexual and reproductive health and rights? Three organisations\, as well as youth who have been using these spaces\, will share their experience. \nDescription:  \nSafe spaces can increase access to information on sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) for youth and other people who are marginalized\, contributing to health equity. Safe space users in the Gaza strip and Ghana will provide reflections on how they’ve used these spaces and their ideas for improvement. Speakers from Norsaac (Ghana)\, the Abdel Shafi Community Health Association (Gaza) and the Culture and Free Thought Association (Gaza) will share their insights on how to create physical and virtual safe spaces for SRHR that reach young people\, people living with disabilities and survivors of gender-based violence\, among others. \nSpeakers:\nMariam Shaqura\, Women’s Affairs Director\, Abdel Shafi Community Health Association\, Gaza\nMariam has over twenty years of experience working in women health\, reproductive and sexual health\, and gender-based violence management including prevention\, protection and response. She has been the Director of the Women Health Center in Gaza Strip for 14 years. She was one of 16 people worldwide to win a creative women prize for her work on GBV. Beyond her work with ACHA she has participated in designing a Community Emergency Preparedness and Response Plan with Alianza and creating an internal protection mechanism for COSPE. She holds a bachelor’s degree in nursing and a master’s degree in public health. \nFiryal Thabet\, Women’s Health Center Director\, Culture and Free Thought Association\, Gaza\nFiryal is a gender and health specialist with more than twenty of years of experience working on reproductive and sexual health\, women issues and GBV-related issues. She is the Director of Women Health Center in the Gaza Strip. She has extensive experience in providing consultancy and conducting research on GBV\, protection and gender analyses with international\, national and private organizations. She holds a bachelor’s degree in physiotherapy from Bethlehem University\, a master’s degree in public health from AL Quads University and a post graduate diploma from Gaza Community Mental Health and Berlin University in Professional technical supervision. \nHafsatu Sey Sumani\, Head of Programs\, Policy and Campaigns\, Norsaac\, Ghana\nHafsatu co-founded Norsaac and has been involved in social work for the past 20 years from being a peer educator and facilitator and to work in organization development\, leadership\, mentorship and coaching as well as networking and collaboration. She holds a Master of Science in Local Economic Development as well as Bachelor of Arts in Integrated Development Studies. She is also trained as a teacher and taught for five years in Ghana. She has also mentored organizations in Sierra Leone to successfully advocate for the inclusion of Reproductive Health Education in school curriculum. \nNakidu Kassim\, Student\, Ghana\nNakidu\, 20\, is from Kpandai in the Northern Region\, Ghana. She obtained a scholarship and is completing her final year at the Registered Midwifery and Training college\, Kpembe. and is Student Representative Council President (first female to hold this position)\, as well as President of the Model Girls Alumni. She is the Kpandai Cluster Secretary for CAMA and as an active CAMFED Association member\, benefited from the business startup kit. She loves advocating for the less privileged\, creating awareness around SRHR\, mentoring young girls\, and empowering them to take up leadership roles and participate meaningfully in decision making. \nThe discussion wiill be moderated by Heidi Monk\, Senior Program Officer\, Oxfam-Québec. SUMMARY:Assessing the impact of the Global Women's Health Movement: an Interdisciplinary and Personal Reflection
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to be joined by one of the leaders of the Global Women’s Health Movement\, an alumna and former Professor at the Harvard School of Public Health and Co-Founder/ Co-Author of the international best-selling book\, Norma Swenson\, MPH for our upcoming webinar on “Assessing the impact of the Global Women’s Health Movement: an Interdisciplinary and Personal Reflection” \nNorma Meras Swenson is a founding member of Our Bodies Ourselves (OBOS)\, also known as The Boston Women’s Health Book Collective\, Inc. She has worked with colleagues throughout the United States and globally to help define and create the field known as Women and Health. She is the co-author and/or co-editor of most editions of “Our Bodies\, Ourselves” and was a contributing author to the popular guide “Ourselves Growing Older\,” produced in collaboration with OBOS. \nA senior OBOS staff member and the organization’s first Director of International Programs until 1998\, Norma also served for several years as OBOS president. She is an internationally recognized leader and expert in reproductive and sexual health and rights\, and in maternal and child health. An early leader in the maternity care reform movement\, Norma is a past president of both the International Childbirth Education Association and the Boston Association for Childbirth Education. \nA graduate of Tufts University\, Norma earned her MPH from the Harvard School of Public Health\, studied medical sociology at Tufts\, and later at Brandeis University. She taught Women\, Health and Development from a global perspective at the Harvard School of Public Health\, the first and longest-running Women and Health course at Harvard University. She also co-taught an interdisciplinary course\, Gender\, Health\, and Marginalization\, at MIT’s Graduate Consortium of Women’s Studies. \nPresently Norma gives guest lectures\, works with students on independent study projects and continues consulting with nonprofits\, community groups and university programs in the US and abroad. At Our Bodies\, Ourselves\, she is supporting the ongoing coordination of Translations and Adaptations of Our Bodies\, Ourselves books into languages other than English\, currently the 3 -volume Portuguese Brazilian edition in progress: Nossos Corpos por Nós Mesmas\, launched in 2021 by the Coletivo Feminista Sexualidade e Saúde in Sâo Paulo. \nIn this webinar\, Norma will discuss the impact of the Global Women’s Health Movement from an interdisciplinary and Personal perspective. Learning objectives from the seminar include: \n\nImproved recognition of Human Rights\, Social Justice and Social Epidemiology imperatives from Public Health in the evaluation of health and MCH medical care services\, outcomes\, and planning.\nGreater familiarity with authentic\, community-led services and organization as resources for Health Promotion\, learning and improved MCH outcomes.\nFuller knowledge of emerging actors. nascent professionals\, and alternative Health Delivery settings/loci in MCH planning and research.\n\nClick here to register!

SUMMARY:Integrating Gender Equality to Humanitarian Action
DESCRIPTION:Humanitarian crises disproportionately affect women\, girls\, and gender-diverse people. From natural disasters to conflict\, women and girls have their family and social networks disrupted\, are exposed to an increase in gender-based violence (GBV)\, lose access to critical sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services and have existing gender inequalities further exacerbated post-crisis. \nAs a result\, there is a need to integrate a gender lens into humanitarian response programming and to create opportunities for gender transformative (GT) change. This focus creates opportunities to address the root causes and social norms underpinning gender inequalities. It also considers other gender transformative interventions whose importance are often minimized in humanitarian response because the primary focus of programming is on disaster relief or timelines for program delivery are too short to track transformative change. \nAdditionally\, the gendered impacts of humanitarian crises are not recognized and addressed in the same way in all contexts. In particular\, domestic disaster management programs often fail to include a GE/GT lens\, as was highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic​. \nOn September 13 from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. EDT\, join CanWaCH to discuss practical tools and best practices to better integrate gender equality / gender transformative programming in humanitarian action\, the link between humanitarian-development and nexus programming and how to close the gap that exists between international and domestic responses. SUMMARY:The SDG second half: Ideas for doing things differently
DESCRIPTION:World leaders just met at the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals midpoint summit . Halfway between the SDG’s 2015 launch and the 2030 deadline\, the mood was somber. Stark global tensions alongside inadequate SDG progress made for a tough outlook for the next seven years. In the words of Secretary-General António Guterres\, “halfway to 2030 #GlobalGoals deadline\, the world is woefully off-track. Now is not the time for incrementalism.” \nThe world has not been doing enough to be on course for SDG success. What can we learn from what has gone well? Where could a burst of effort tackle gaps? Perhaps\, most importantly\, what needs to be done differently? \nOn October 5\, Aga Khan Foundation Canada (AKFC) and the Brookings Center for Sustainable Development will host an event in-person and online discussing the Brookings compendium of essays: The SDG Second Half: Ideas for doing things differently. The essays offer insights and actionable recommendations to address pressing issues in the second half of the SDG era. We will have the opportunity to discuss opportunities for SDG breakthroughs and leadership—both globally and from a Canadian perspective. \nAdditional information for attendees: \n– Networking/Refreshments: In-person attendees are encouraged to participate in an informal networking session and enjoy refreshments before and after the event.\n– This session will be offered in English only. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Gender Lens Investing: The Role of Translation
DESCRIPTION:Gender lens investing is an approach that integrates a gender analysis into investment analysis and decision-making to better inform investment decisions and advance gender equality. However\, gender experts and finance organizations often lack the capacity to integrate their analyses. This problem exists in traditional banks or microfinance institutions where women often still struggle to access appropriate financial services\, and in the unequal structures of power in the broader structures of finance that shape the global economy. Translation work between finance and gender is essential to closing the analysis gap and making gender lens investing work effectively. \nThis event is sponsored by WUSC\, in partnership with Criterion Institute as part of the ARISE grant funded by Global Affairs Canada\, and CAFIID’s Gender Lens Investing Community of Practice (CoP)\, with support from the Government of Canada’s Investment Readiness Program (IRP). As part of our ecosystem building mandate\, we will bring together members of CAFIID\, Cooperation Canada’s Innovative finance working group\, Table of Impact Investment Practitioners (TIIP) as well as government stakeholders. \nOverall objective:\n– Create space amongst CAFIID members and relevant GLI stakeholders to reflect on how translation can facilitate stronger GLI approaches. \nSpecific objectives:\n– Build knowledge and collaboration amongst CAFIID members and other GLI stakeholders\n– Identify the role that CSOs/WROs can play in advancing a GLI translation function\n– Identify lessons for GAC and other major donor/investors related to GLI and translation\n– Share learning around partnerships between CSOs and private sector \nClick here to register!
