SUMMARY:Poetic Inquiry into Narratives of Obstetric Violence in Canada
DESCRIPTION:Arts-based research has a unique way of presenting sensitive experiences. In this talk\, Dr. Kaveri Mayra will focus on 2741 people’s narratives about their embodied experience of labour and birth\, and the trauma and violence within those experiences\, using poetic enquiry. Through a series of poems and artistic illustrations\, this presentation seeks to engage with and understand participants’ narratives of obstetric violence and respectful person-centred care. \nAbout the Speaker: \nDr. Kaveri Mayra is a midwifery\, nursing and global health researcher from India with a PhD in Global Health from the University of Southampton\, UK\, where she explored the experiences and determinants of obstetric violence in India through an arts-based method called ‘birth mapping’. Dr. Mayra is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the Birth Place Lab\, and the recipient of a Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research (MSFHR). She has extensive research experience on nursing and midwifery workforce policies\, regulation and practice; sexual\, reproductive and maternal health care and the underlying gender-based challenges.  \nDr. Mayra is has delivered guest lectures in universities and at conferences around the world on obstetric violence; orgasm equality\, nursing and midwifery governance\, the inequities\, sexism and discriminations in health policy-making; and has been recognized as one of the 100 outstanding global midwife and nurse leaders by Women in Global Health (WGH)\, WHO\, ICN\, ICM\, Nursing Now and UNFPA to mark the Year of the Nurse and the Midwife 2020. She was recently featured as Frontiers women in STEM.  \nDr. Mayra currently serves on the board on Human Rights in Childbirth (HRIC)\, White Ribbon Alliance UK and Academy for Nursing Studies and Women’s Empowerment Research Studies. She is an Academic Editor with PLOS Global Public Health and was a consultant for the WHO Academy on Essential Respectful Care Course. SUMMARY:Social Behavioural Change for inclusive SRHR in humanitarian settings
DESCRIPTION:One in five women worldwide live with a disability\, often in low- and middle-income countries\, and 220 million persons with disability are young. Despite effort for fulfilling the Right to Health stated in the Convention of the Right of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD)\, social and gender norms may limit the access to inclusive information and quality services regarding Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR). Social Behavior Change (SBC) can play a pivotal role in addressing structural\, attitudinal and communication barriers to SRHR services. We will present a new “Inclusive SBC for SRHR” practical guide\, sharing experiences and stories\, and exploring how to use inclusive SBC in SRHR to dismantle stigma related to the intersection of disability and SRHR. \nThe session is in English with sign-language translation. \nAttend here!

SUMMARY:MIHCAN - Homemade Orthotics for Foot and Knee Problems: A Functional Approach
DESCRIPTION:Please join Maternal and Infant Health Canada… for a webinar by Dr. Hélène Bertrand. The webinar is open to all and free of charge. We host webinars every two months. All welcome! The webinar will include a demonstration session of how to make your own orthotics. Dr. Hélène Bertrand will be available to answer participants questions related to hammertoe\, low arches\, calf pain\, and other common complaints related to foot problems. \nLearning Objectives from Webinar: \n1. Research evidence on orthotic effectiveness for different foot and knee problems\n2. Functional anatomy of the lower leg\n3. How to make orthotics to correct the functional anatomy\n4. To provide relief for different foot\, ankle and knee conditions \nDr. Hélène Bertrand \nClinical Instructor\, Department of Family Practice\, University of British Columbia Dr. Bertrand graduated from McGill medical school in 1965. She worked and did research as a family practitioner until she retired in November 2020. In the last 12 of her 55 year medical practice she treated only people referred to her for severe chronic pain. Using perineural injections of mannitol\, dextrose prolotherapy\, lifestyle modification\, hypnosis and meditation as well as prescribing corrective orthotics\, 80% of those referrals found pain relief. Her current goal is to communicate the knowledge she acquired. She has published 10 research articles\, and one book on a 2-minute procedure to relieve low back pain. She also developed a mannitol-based pain-relieving cream. \nAttend here!
