DESCRIPTION:Climate change is a social issue\, a health issue\, and one that is deeply intertwined with global patterns of inequity. In communities across the globe\, Black\, Indigenous and people of colour (BIPOC) disproportionately bear the brunt of climate change’s impacts\, in particular through the systems\, policies and practices upheld by environmental racism. DESCRIPTION:The climate crisis directly and disproportionately impacts women and girls’ lives and well-being and deepens gender inequality. This impact can be felt acutely as regards SRHR. Addressing the interconnections between gender equality\, the environment and sustainable development is crucial for SRHR and elevating the voices of women is central. DESCRIPTION:As climate-exacerbated natural disasters continue to increase in frequency and intensity around the world\, the effects of climate change are more clear than ever – and women and girls are most susceptible to their impact. This event examines the link between climate change resilience\, family planning and sexual and reproductive health and rights through a panel discussion with experts and a presentation of FP2030’s new emergency preparedness and response strategy. Please join us to hear from policy makers\, women’s rights organizations\, advocates\, and young leaders in the field. \nAs the COVID-19 pandemic continues to be felt around the globe\, political conflict persists in many countries\, and further climate-driven crises occur\, more and more women will be affected by crises. Without immediate action\, we will risk losing decades of progress on sexual and reproductive health including access to family planning services and put at risk the already precarious traction on gender equality\, women and girls empowerment. This session will share expertise from the field\, and chart FP2030’s plan for the future.

SUMMARY:Visions and voices of a healthy planet: A Healing Arts event for World Health Day 2022
DESCRIPTION:In every crisis\, it often seems that the first to arrive to help are healthcare workers and artists. This was most recently true during the pandemic\, and it is increasingly true as the consequences of climate change become more apparent. Human caused climate change has created an existential threat to life on this planet and has dramatically altered our health and wellbeing as well as our conception of ourselves and our place in the world. \nIt is in this spirit that we have called together care providers and artists across genres and geographies who recognize the relationship between planetary and human health. Health care providers are prescribing nature visits to increase vitality and reduce stress and anxiety. Artists are using the transformative power of the arts to promote awareness\, dialogue\, imaginative action\, and a sense of reconnection. SUMMARY:Subsidizing global health: Women’s unpaid work in health systems
DESCRIPTION:Despite being the majority in the profession\, women in the health sector are paid 23% less than their male counterparts (Gender Pay Gap) and millions of women are working unpaid or grossly underpaid in core health systems roles. It is estimated that women in health contribute 5% to global gross domestic product (GDP) (US$ 3 trillion)\, out of which almost 50% is unrecognized and unpaid. Women’s unpaid work at community level has had major positive health outcomes for communities\, as confirmed by the unpaid work women have done in the pandemic tracing positive cases\, promoting public health measures and delivering vaccines. It is a contradiction that this valuable work appears to have no economic value. It is also a contradiction that some of the world’s poorest women take on this work in addition to their already heavy load of domestic and subsistence work. \nAgainst this backdrop\, Women in Global Health\, in collaboration with the Frontline Health Worker Coalition will hold a high-level\, 90-minute event to launch WGH’s latest policy report \, Subsidizing global health: Women’s unpaid work in health systems\, marking World Health Worker Week. \nRegister here.

DESCRIPTION:Universal Health Coverage (UHC) cannot be reached without community health workers (CHWs) delivering quality health care and services for the hardest-to-reach communities. Countries are adopting and implementing UHC policies in an effort to improve the health outcomes of their most vulnerable populations. Many are also making commitments to support CHWs as formal members of the workforce and provide necessary training\, supervision\, and payment to allow them to deliver quality PHC services to their communities. SUMMARY:Is Global Health Equity Truly Achievable? A Conversation with the Think 7 Global Health Task Force
DESCRIPTION:On the 3rd of February\, Amref Health Africa and Dalberg hosted the Africa Dialogues on COVID-19 webinar with public health experts\, Dr Ebere Okereke (Senior Technical Adviser at the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change and honorary Senior Public Health Advisor to Africa CDC) and Mah-Sere Keita (Director of Programs\, Africa Society for Laboratory Medicine) to discuss how Africa can build capacity for vaccine development and delivery within the continent. \nAs Edwin Macharia noted\, “the inequalities of vaccine distribution have been glaring” and the session provided high-level recommendations on how we can develop the research and development capacity of the continent. These include: \n\ndeveloping business models that are tailored to the African complexities\nleveraging the AfCFTA for vaccine distribution\ncreating enabling environments that help African talents thrive and develop continent-focused solutions\n\nMah-Sere Keita spoke on the need for more representation from the continent in conversations on vaccine distribution and explained that “we need to have African voices talk about what it is that we need to do better on the continent to be able to not only manufacture vaccines but also diagnostics and therapeutics”. \nEmphasising the need for vaccine manufacturing on the continent\, Dr Okereke said\, “…we need more (vaccine) manufacturing on the continent. We have the highest burden of HIV on the globe\, and we do not produce HIV diagnostics. Africa only produces about 1% of its vaccine needs”. \nVaccine inequity in Africa and the need for increased representation from the continent in global health fora was stressed during these discussions and Dr Githinji Gitahi noted that “…Africa needs to also build its own (health) structures\, not in conflict with international global structures\, but aligned and with their own control.” \nIt is therefore pertinent that we discuss health inequality on a global scale and its impact on developing nations and marginalised communities. This forms the theme of the next Africa Dialogues – Phase II which comes up on 14 April 2022. \nDuring the webinar\, we will explore the reforms needed to ensure that global health systems strengthen and cater to the fragile health structures of developing nations. \nIn the coming weeks\, we will provide more details on why this topic is crucial and also share the profiles of the thought leaders who will be leading these discussions. This devastating collateral damage on women and children’s health demands bold solutions and urgent and additional investment to prevent long term consequences. \nThis high-level event is part of the Global Financing Facility’s (GFF) “Reclaim the Gains” resource mobilization campaign\, co-hosted by the Governments of Canada and Senegal\, and the World Bank. DESCRIPTION:The COVID-19 pandemic has severely affected the routine immunization of children. Most countries experienced drops in childhood vaccination coverage rates\, erasing decades of progress. Lifesaving vaccination campaigns were postponed in 50 countries in 2021\, putting around 228 million\, mostly children\, at risk of vaccine preventable diseases such as measles\, yellow fever\, and polio. \nAfter over two years of the pandemic and ongoing efforts to restore\, maintain and improve immunization programmes\, what are the key lessons that we have learned? SUMMARY:Using New Country Data on Unintended Pregnancy and Abortion Incidence for Maximum Advocacy and Policy Impact
DESCRIPTION:The Guttmacher Institute\, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Human Reproduction Programme (HRP) recently released new estimates of unintended pregnancy and abortion incidence for 150 countries. This includes 87 countries that never have had reliable evidence on these measures from official statistics or scientific studies. This new study illuminates major disparities in access to sexual and reproductive health care between countries of all income levels around the world. \nThe Guttmacher Institute will hold a 60-minute virtual briefing on Wednesday\, 17 May\, 2022 \, at 10:00 a.m. ET to highlight key findings of the study\, related policy recommendations and the use of the new evidence for advocacy purposes. \nThe discussion will be moderated by Guttmacher’s Vice President for Research\, Dr. Aletha Akers\, and will feature María Mercedes Vivas\, Executive Director of Fundación Oriéntame in Colombia.
