This has created new ways for women\, girls\, and gender-diverse people to be isolated\, exploited\, abused\, harassed\, silenced\, and excluded. In particular\, technology-facilitated gender-based violence (TFGBV)* – – has become a growing threat and carries significant health\, safety\, political and economic consequences for women and girls\, for their families and communities\, and for society as a whole. \nOn September 27 from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. EDT\, join CanWaCH to discuss strategies\, tools and best practices to address and prevent TFGBV through multiple approaches and at different levels. DESCRIPTION:World leaders just met at the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals midpoint summit . Halfway between the SDG’s 2015 launch and the 2030 deadline\, the mood was somber. Stark global tensions alongside inadequate SDG progress made for a tough outlook for the next seven years. In the words of Secretary-General António Guterres\, “halfway to 2030 #GlobalGoals deadline\, the world is woefully off-track. Now is not the time for incrementalism.” \nThe world has not been doing enough to be on course for SDG success. What can we learn from what has gone well? Where could a burst of effort tackle gaps? Perhaps\, most importantly\, what needs to be done differently? \nOn October 5\, Aga Khan Foundation Canada (AKFC) and the Brookings Center for Sustainable Development will host an event in-person and online discussing the Brookings compendium of essays: The SDG Second Half: Ideas for doing things differently. The essays offer insights and actionable recommendations to address pressing issues in the second half of the SDG era. SUMMARY:Gender Lens Investing: The Role of Translation
DESCRIPTION:Gender lens investing is an approach that integrates a gender analysis into investment analysis and decision-making to better inform investment decisions and advance gender equality. However\, gender experts and finance organizations often lack the capacity to integrate their analyses. This problem exists in traditional banks or microfinance institutions where women often still struggle to access appropriate financial services\, and in the unequal structures of power in the broader structures of finance that shape the global economy. Translation work between finance and gender is essential to closing the analysis gap and making gender lens investing work effectively. \nThis event is sponsored by WUSC\, in partnership with Criterion Institute as part of the ARISE grant funded by Global Affairs Canada\, and CAFIID’s Gender Lens Investing Community of Practice (CoP)\, with support from the Government of Canada’s Investment Readiness Program (IRP). DESCRIPTION:As the midpoint of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) draws near\, the Mothers Matter Centre is orchestrating a national virtual event. This event aims to reflect on Canada’s progress toward achieving Agenda 2030. Over the past five years\, approximately 1.3 million newcomers have made Canada their permanent home. Despite Canada’s notable ranking on the Human Development Index\, disparities persist\, particularly among newcomers\, refugees\, and Indigenous communities. These disparities hinder their access to essential rights and impede their journey toward achieving the SDG targets. \nGovernment policy makers\, global initiatives\, social service organizations\, civil society\, and the community members\, can work together to bridge the existing SDG gaps in socially and economically isolated communities. The SDGs National Event will explore how local communities and passionate activists play a pivotal role in driving social\, economic\, and environmental progress on a local\, global\, and international scale. Learn about successful projects and initiatives led by community members\, showcasing their resilience\, innovation\, and dedication. It will also highlight programs and practices that can assist vulnerable communities in addressing their local needs and providing solutions to bridge the SDG gaps in isolated Canadian communities. The Mothers Matter Centre’s goal is to create an inclusive platform where SDG experts\, government representatives\, women’s rights activists\, and community workers can share their experiences and learn from one another. Simultaneous French interpretation will be available. \nMost maternal deaths are entirely preventable\, yet today still almost 800 women die a day globally from complications related to pregnancy and childbirth. Despite global gains\, recent research from UNFPA highlights that maternal mortality has in fact risen in the Americas by about 15% and birthing people of African descent are notably overrepresented. \nTaking a reproductive justice approach\, this virtual panel will explore the causes and consequences of these racial disparities in reproductive healthcare\, identifying effective strategies to eradicate inequalities and ensure quality healthcare for all. \nClick here to register!
