DESCRIPTION:Join a diverse panel of experts who will share their insights and identify solutions to support and accelerate vaccine delivery and uptake in Africa at a webinar on February 21.We are hosting the second in our series of 90-minute webinars on the challenges of and opportunities for strengthening vaccine delivery and uptake in Africa. Please join us to learn more about this international effort.  \nThe African Union set an ambitious objective of developing\, producing and distributing at least 60% of the vaccines for Africa by 2040 and has established the Partnerships for African Vaccine Manufacturing to enhance the continent’s supply resilience. It aims to increase health security across the continent and globally. At present\, less than 0.1% of the world’s vaccine supply is manufactured in Africa\, and only 1% of vaccines deployed in Africa are manufactured on the continent. \nOther partners\, including Global Affairs Canada\, the Mastercard Foundation and IDRC\, are investing in this objective. Global Affairs Canada’s Global Initiative for Vaccine Equity has invested CAD317 million to increase COVID-19 vaccination among priority groups\, reinforce health-system capacity and diversify vaccine manufacturing capacity in 12 target countries\, most of which are in Africa. The Mastercard Foundation’s Saving Lives and Livelihoods program aims to secure vaccines for a minimum of 50 million individuals and facilitate the administration of vaccinations to millions more across Africa. IDRC is funding research to identify the challenges and issues associated with scaling vaccine manufacturing and distribution in Africa\, and to accelerate the uptake and use of new vaccines as they are rolled out.The discussion will be hosted in English with live French interpretation. \nThis roundtable\, co-sponsored by IDRC and Global Affairs Canada\, is the second in a series to share information and identify ways to help overcome the challenges that lie ahead.  \nRegister here!

SUMMARY:Advancing Action on Adaptation: Implications of COP28
DESCRIPTION:Greater support and action on adaptation is a longstanding need\, as outlined in the Global Goal on Adaptation (GGA)\, established under the 2015 Paris Agreement. The estimated cost of adaptation for developing countries could reach up to US$387 billion annually within this decade\, underscoring the importance of addressing the scale and frequency of climate-related disasters and impacts. The GGA is a framework to provide measurable targets\, indicators\, and guidelines aimed at catalysing adaptation initiatives and enhancing financing and support for developing countries. Yet\, putting the GGA into action has proved challenging. \nAt COP28\, Parties identified gaps as part of the first Global Stocktake\, and sought to advance progress on the GGA by adopting the UAE Framework for Global Climate Resilience. \nOn February 22\, join Aga Khan Foundation Canada and the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) for a virtual event on advancing global action on adaptation and the implications of COP28’s adaptation-related outcomes. SUMMARY:Celebrating gender and malaria successes and heroes panel discussion
DESCRIPTION:For the 2024 World Malaria Day\, gender is at the forefront of the agenda. Over the last few years\, progress towards malaria elimination have stagnated and in 2022\, 608 000 lost their lives to malaria while 249 million malaria cases were reported. Research from various countries shows that gender-based economic\, cultural\, and social dynamics have had an impact of achieving malaria elimination goals. \nSeveral actors have taken on the task of addressing gender-based biases within malaria policies and programme and with their support\, progress has been made to bridge the gender and equity divide within malaria programmes. \nAlong the sidelines of the 8th Multilateral Initiative on Malaria (MIM) Society conference\, the RBM Partnership and its members would like to pause and reflect on the work done so far\, celebrate the successes achieved and plan for the future. SUMMARY:Beyond Hospital Doors: A Deep Dive into Post-Discharge Mortality Among Rwandan Children
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Institute for Global Health at BC Children’s Hospital and BC Women’s Hospital + Health Centre on Thursday\, May 8\, 2024 from 12:00 – 1:00PM for a global health special seminar by Dr. Christian Umuhoza on “Beyond Hospital Doors: A Deep Dive into Post-Discharge Mortality Among Rwandan Children”. He will present the Smart Discharges study findings on the neglected burden of post-discharge mortality among Rwandan children. A meet and greet with Dr. Umuhoza will follow from 1:00-2:00PM and refreshments will be served. \nDr. Umuhoza is a consultant pediatrician at the University Teaching Hospital of Kigali (CHUK) and senior lecturer at the University of Rwanda (UR). With a keen interest in medical education\, Dr. Umuhoza plays an invaluable role in teaching medical students and residents in pediatrics. In 2022\, Dr. Umuhoza partnered with the Institute for Global Health as the Co-Principal Investigator for the Smart Discharges Digital Health Research Program aiming to improve hospital-to-home transitions among children recovering from sepsis. The online course will be recorded and available until July 1\, 2024.\n-In-person: May 23 & 24 9:00am-3:00pm (Montreal time). The in-person course will not be recorded.  \nDESCRIPTION\nAdvocacy has a crucial role to play in shaping priorities and policies in global health\, yet figuring out how to get started in advocacy can be daunting. Through a combination of lectures\, interactive activities\, case studies and guest speakers\, participants will leave this course inspired by the potential of advocacy for positive change and confident in their ability to incorporate it into their own work. In this session\, participants will learn to identify opportunities for policy change in different contexts\, and the tools to influence decision-making to bring about specific changes in global health. This will include an overview of advocacy\, key components to build high-impact campaigns in different settings\, working collaboratively with multiple stakeholders\, ways to communicate effectively with target audiences\, engaging parliamentarians and policymakers\, and campaigning through digital advocacy. SUMMARY:Ensuring global access to affordable diagnostics for tuberculosis: A Canadian perspective
DESCRIPTION:Before patients can be effectively treated\, they need to be diagnosed. The GeneXpert is an effective diagnostic tool for diseases like drug-resistant tuberculosis\, HIV and hepatitis that is also suitable for low-resource environments. Unfortunately\, high prices for the cartridges used for each test mean it does not reach all who could benefit. This session will explain the “Time for $5” campaign calling on GeneXpert manufacturers Cepheid and Danaher to lower the price of cartridges; discuss the importance of diagnostics in settings from Canada to Lesotho; and highlight Canada’s pledges\, and shortfalls\, supporting the global push to end TB.
