SUMMARY:Celebrating gender and malaria successes and heroes panel discussion
DESCRIPTION:For the 2024 World Malaria Day\, gender is at the forefront of the agenda. Over the last few years\, progress towards malaria elimination have stagnated and in 2022\, 608 000 lost their lives to malaria while 249 million malaria cases were reported. Research from various countries shows that gender-based economic\, cultural\, and social dynamics have had an impact of achieving malaria elimination goals. \nSeveral actors have taken on the task of addressing gender-based biases within malaria policies and programme and with their support\, progress has been made to bridge the gender and equity divide within malaria programmes. \nAlong the sidelines of the 8th Multilateral Initiative on Malaria (MIM) Society conference\, the RBM Partnership and its members would like to pause and reflect on the work done so far\, celebrate the successes achieved and plan for the future. He will present the Smart Discharges study findings on the neglected burden of post-discharge mortality among Rwandan children. A meet and greet with Dr. Umuhoza will follow from 1:00-2:00PM and refreshments will be served. \nDr. Umuhoza is a consultant pediatrician at the University Teaching Hospital of Kigali (CHUK) and senior lecturer at the University of Rwanda (UR). With a keen interest in medical education\, Dr. Umuhoza plays an invaluable role in teaching medical students and residents in pediatrics. In 2022\, Dr. Umuhoza partnered with the Institute for Global Health as the Co-Principal Investigator for the Smart Discharges Digital Health Research Program aiming to improve hospital-to-home transitions among children recovering from sepsis. SUMMARY:Ensuring global access to affordable diagnostics for tuberculosis: A Canadian perspective
DESCRIPTION:Before patients can be effectively treated\, they need to be diagnosed. The GeneXpert is an effective diagnostic tool for diseases like drug-resistant tuberculosis\, HIV and hepatitis that is also suitable for low-resource environments. Unfortunately\, high prices for the cartridges used for each test mean it does not reach all who could benefit. This session will explain the “Time for $5” campaign calling on GeneXpert manufacturers Cepheid and Danaher to lower the price of cartridges; discuss the importance of diagnostics in settings from Canada to Lesotho; and highlight Canada’s pledges\, and shortfalls\, supporting the global push to end TB.

SUMMARY:Bridging Advocacy and Research - Perinatal Care & Incarceration
DESCRIPTION:This seminar will include:  \n– An introduction to the current state of affairs related to perinatal care and women’s reproductive health as it relates to incarceration\, including a small review of interesting findings in the literature applicable to the topic at hand.  \n– A recount of the current issues related to mother-baby provincial programs and how they affect the mother-baby connection in BC and Canada. Legal and psychosocial issues women and babies face with the current policies surrounding mother-baby programs\, from the perspective of both someone with a lived experience and someone involved in this area day-to-day.  \n– A call for action to bridge research and policy\, including an introduction of a new hub aiming at addressing these issues in a way that involves communities\, policy-makers and researchers (IMPACT Hub). \nAbout the Speakers: \nAllison Campbell is a Registered Midwife and Associate Professor of Teaching in the Midwifery Program at UBC. She is currently completing PhD studies at the Institute for Gender\, Race\, Sexuality and Social Justice (aka the Social Justice Institute). Combining her professional and political interests: social justice in perinatal health care and incarceration practices in Canada\, and informed by many years of learning\, practicing and teaching midwifery\, her PhD work focuses on perinatal experiences and reproductive justice in prisons in BC\, specifically with regards to parenting behind bars. Allison has received funding from SSHRC and the UBC Public Scholars’ Initiative for her research and is a 2023-24 recipient of a Killam Teaching Prize.  \nMo Korchinski is the Executive Director of Unlocking the Gates Service Society (UTG). Mo has had a long history of substance abuse and incarceration. Mo has a Bachelor of Social Work from Nicola Valley Institution of Technology. Her life’s work is now dedicated to helping others break the cycle of incarceration. She is an advocate for people involved in the criminal justice system and continues to push for change at a policy level and increased support for her community. Mo feels strongly about the need to address trauma and support healing for people who experience incarceration.  \nDr. Jessica Liauw is a Maternal Fetal Medicine clinician-scientist at BC Women’s Hospital and Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of British Columbia. She completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at McMaster University. She completed her Maternal Fetal Medicine fellowship\, Masters of Health Sciences in Population and Public Health\, and the Clinician-Investigator fellowship at UBC. SUMMARY:Midwives are Key to Climate Resilience
DESCRIPTION:Midwives are an essential climate solution. The increasing impacts of climate change have an outsized impact on maternal and newborn health\, as well as access to family planning and other vital health services. Midwives play a critical role in providing essential health services during climate-related disasters\, and in the context of the lasting impacts of climate change on health systems. \nHowever\, there remains a global shortage of midwives and a lack of investment and commitment to their training and support. The current global focus on climate change offers an opportune time to showcase the role of midwives as climate change champions and leaders in climate action. \nPlease join the Wilson Center’s Maternal Health Initiative\, in partnership with UNFPA\, for a virtual panel discussion on the role of midwives in building resilience to climate change. The event will highlight some innovative and adaptive strategies midwives have used when faced with extreme heat\, flooding\, and wildfires while caring for women and families. Speakers will also discuss policies and programming that are necessary to support midwives as frontline workers in areas affected by climate change. \nClick here to attend!
