SUMMARY:Adaptation to climate change-driven infectious disease risks in Canada

SUMMARY:Celebrating gender and malaria successes and heroes panel discussion
DESCRIPTION:For the 2024 World Malaria Day\, gender is at the forefront of the agenda. Over the last few years\, progress towards malaria elimination have stagnated and in 2022\, 608 000 lost their lives to malaria while 249 million malaria cases were reported. Research from various countries shows that gender-based economic\, cultural\, and social dynamics have had an impact of achieving malaria elimination goals. \nSeveral actors have taken on the task of addressing gender-based biases within malaria policies and programme and with their support\, progress has been made to bridge the gender and equity divide within malaria programmes. \nAlong the sidelines of the 8th Multilateral Initiative on Malaria (MIM) Society conference\, the RBM Partnership and its members would like to pause and reflect on the work done so far\, celebrate the successes achieved and plan for the future. DESCRIPTION:Please join the Institute for Global Health at BC Children’s Hospital and BC Women’s Hospital + Health Centre on Thursday\, May 8\, 2024 from 12:00 – 1:00PM for a global health special seminar by Dr. Christian Umuhoza on “Beyond Hospital Doors: A Deep Dive into Post-Discharge Mortality Among Rwandan Children”. He will present the Smart Discharges study findings on the neglected burden of post-discharge mortality among Rwandan children. A meet and greet with Dr. Umuhoza will follow from 1:00-2:00PM and refreshments will be served. \nDr. Umuhoza is a consultant pediatrician at the University Teaching Hospital of Kigali (CHUK) and senior lecturer at the University of Rwanda (UR). With a keen interest in medical education\, Dr. Umuhoza plays an invaluable role in teaching medical students and residents in pediatrics. In 2022\, Dr. Umuhoza partnered with the Institute for Global Health as the Co-Principal Investigator for the Smart Discharges Digital Health Research Program aiming to improve hospital-to-home transitions among children recovering from sepsis. SUMMARY:Ensuring global access to affordable diagnostics for tuberculosis: A Canadian perspective
DESCRIPTION:Before patients can be effectively treated\, they need to be diagnosed. The GeneXpert is an effective diagnostic tool for diseases like drug-resistant tuberculosis\, HIV and hepatitis that is also suitable for low-resource environments. Unfortunately\, high prices for the cartridges used for each test mean it does not reach all who could benefit. This session will explain the “Time for $5” campaign calling on GeneXpert manufacturers Cepheid and Danaher to lower the price of cartridges; discuss the importance of diagnostics in settings from Canada to Lesotho; and highlight Canada’s pledges\, and shortfalls\, supporting the global push to end TB.

SUMMARY:Bridging Advocacy and Research - Perinatal Care & Incarceration
DESCRIPTION:This seminar will include:  \n– An introduction to the current state of affairs related to perinatal care and women’s reproductive health as it relates to incarceration\, including a small review of interesting findings in the literature applicable to the topic at hand.  \n– A recount of the current issues related to mother-baby provincial programs and how they affect the mother-baby connection in BC and Canada. Legal and psychosocial issues women and babies face with the current policies surrounding mother-baby programs\, from the perspective of both someone with a lived experience and someone involved in this area day-to-day.  \n– A call for action to bridge research and policy\, including an introduction of a new hub aiming at addressing these issues in a way that involves communities\, policy-makers and researchers (IMPACT Hub). \nAbout the Speakers: \nAllison Campbell is a Registered Midwife and Associate Professor of Teaching in the Midwifery Program at UBC. She is currently completing PhD studies at the Institute for Gender\, Race\, Sexuality and Social Justice (aka the Social Justice Institute). Combining her professional and political interests: social justice in perinatal health care and incarceration practices in Canada\, and informed by many years of learning\, practicing and teaching midwifery\, her PhD work focuses on perinatal experiences and reproductive justice in prisons in BC\, specifically with regards to parenting behind bars. Allison has received funding from SSHRC and the UBC Public Scholars’ Initiative for her research and is a 2023-24 recipient of a Killam Teaching Prize.  \nMo Korchinski is the Executive Director of Unlocking the Gates Service Society (UTG). Mo has had a long history of substance abuse and incarceration. Mo has a Bachelor of Social Work from Nicola Valley Institution of Technology. Her life’s work is now dedicated to helping others break the cycle of incarceration. She is an advocate for people involved in the criminal justice system and continues to push for change at a policy level and increased support for her community. Mo feels strongly about the need to address trauma and support healing for people who experience incarceration.  \nDr. Jessica Liauw is a Maternal Fetal Medicine clinician-scientist at BC Women’s Hospital and Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of British Columbia. She completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at McMaster University. She completed her Maternal Fetal Medicine fellowship\, Masters of Health Sciences in Population and Public Health\, and the Clinician-Investigator fellowship at UBC. The increasing impacts of climate change have an outsized impact on maternal and newborn health\, as well as access to family planning and other vital health services. Midwives play a critical role in providing essential health services during climate-related disasters\, and in the context of the lasting impacts of climate change on health systems. \nHowever\, there remains a global shortage of midwives and a lack of investment and commitment to their training and support. SUMMARY:Addressing adolescent health\, rights and gender-based violence in Central and West Africa
DESCRIPTION:On June 27\, 2024\, join us for the first event in a new IDRC webinar series entitled Thriving in Safety: Advancing adolescent health and rights and ending gender-based violence in Central and West Africa. Various experts will provide an overview of the evidence\, challenges and opportunities related to adolescents at the nexus of sexual and reproductive health and rights and gender-based violence in West and Central Africa. \nWith adolescents representing 23% of the population in Central and West Africa (the highest proportion of any region in world)\, it is crucial to address the challenges they face\, especially with regard to their health and safety. These challenges include child marriage\, early pregnancy\, gender-based violence (GBV)\, genital mutilation\, socio-economic vulnerability and mental health. GBV and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) are interrelated. However\, a lack of evidence complicates the development of appropriate policies and programs to support the health and wellbeing of adolescents in the region. \nIn its 2016-2030 Health Strategy\, the African Union prioritizes access to comprehensive\, integrated sexual and reproductive services. Now more than ever\, a multi-stakeholder conversation must begin to move toward inclusive and equitable policies that take into account the drivers of SRHR and GBV through locally relevant knowledge and evidence. \nIDRC\, having funded numerous research projects over the past decade to enhance SRHR and tackle GBV in Central and West Africa\, recognizes the need for sustained dialogue and collaboration in this domain. \nOn the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the International Conference on Population and Development\, this webinar series will provide a platform for knowledge exchange\, showcasing experiences and fostering effective multi-stakeholder engagement in advancing adolescent SRHR and ending GBV in Central and West Africa. \nThe discussion will be hosted in English and French with simultaneous interpretation. \nRegister now and join our speakers for the inaugural webinar in the series to learn about the current regional landscape of adolescent SRHR and GBV in Central and West Africa.

SUMMARY:Aid data\, impact\, and the Sustainable Development Goals
DESCRIPTION:Transparency of data and other information on development and humanitarian assistance helps stakeholders understand where aid is provided\, for what purpose\, how it is delivered\, and what results it achieves. Transparency also promotes collaboration among aid donors and implementers and ensures accountability to citizens of both donor and partner countries. \nWith the deadline for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) just six years away\, many assessments show these global goals off track. Improved transparency in aid and development data has led to tools that assess progress\, identify gaps\, and highlight where more effort is needed. How can aid and development data meet information needs for assessing and directing SDG efforts? Specifically\, how can this data inform decisions about SDG 2 and emergency food needs? How do donor agencies use aid and development data to understand their own and others’ programs\, including results and evaluations? What information do countries need for SDGs\, what do they currently use\, and what is still required? \nOn Tuesday\, July 16\, the Center for Sustainable Development at Brookings will host the release of the 2024 Aid Transparency Index in partnership with Publish What You Fund (PWYF). This event will examine the International Aid Transparency Initiative (IATI)\, United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP’S) SDG dashboard\, and country statistical data as three essential tools that\, when combined\, can help countries\, donors\, and citizens better focus their efforts. The event will begin with an introduction by George Ingram\, senior fellow at the Global Economy and Development program. It will be followed by presentations  by PWYF Chief Executive Officer Gary Forster\, and by UNDP’s Director of SDG Integration\, Laurel Patterson. DESCRIPTION:SLD Consulting\, in collaboration with the ARC Hub\, invite you to a transformative training session focused on developing and implementing effective anti-racism strategies. \nPurpose: To advance systemic change and social justice through the delivery of training grounded in transformative learning principles\, to enable the embedding of anti-racist strategies at the organizational level\, thus advancing the work of the sector toward becoming more just and equitable. \nBy the end of the Anti-Racism Strategy Development Training session\, participants will have: \n1. Reviewed the WHAT and WHY of antiracist strategy development \n2. Worked through the process steps for developing an organization-wide antiracist strategy \n3. Identified helps and hindrances to developing and sustaining an anti-racist strategy \n4.
