DESCRIPTION:Join us on Wednesday\, April 1st\, as the AVA Webinar Series presents Engaging Community on MMIWG+ Prevention in Highway of Tears Country\, featuring Dr. Jacqueline Holler and Sara Heembrock from the University of Northern British Columbia. \nWednesday\, April 1st\, 2026 \n2 – 3:30pm EDT \nThe term “Highway of Tears” is globally synonymous with the issue of missing and murdered Indigenous women\, girls\, and gender minorities (MMIWG+)\, but the region has also been the site of powerful advocacy and engagement for change. The Highway of Tears Symposium of 2006 spotlighted the issue and culminated in 33 recommendations for change in Northern BC. This webinar presents results of ongoing engagement and research on MMIWG+ prevention among Carrier Sekani Family Services\, the Northern Feminist Institute for Research and Evaluation\, and communities and agencies in North-Central British Columbia. Since 2023\, the current research partnership has conducted research and engaged community members along the Highway of Tears to assess both progress on prevention and ongoing gaps. This webinar introduces the research project and its findings in advance of the 20th Anniversary Highway of Tears Symposium to be held in Prince George\, BC in April 2026. \nAbout the Speakers \nDr. Jacqueline Holler is Professor of Women’s & Gender Studies and History at the University of Northern British Columbia and a member of the leadership team at the Northern Feminist Institute for Research and Evaluation. \nSara Heembrock is a Master of Education (Counselling) student at the University of Northern British Columbia with experience working alongside Indigenous communities across student services\, housing\, holistic wellness\, and social services in Northern British Columbia. Her work is grounded in Indigenous-led\, trauma-informed\, and community-based approaches\, with a focus on advocacy\, systems change\, and strengthening access to culturally responsive supports. SUMMARY:Measuring What Matters: Inclusive\, Monitoring\, Evaluation\,& Learning (MEL) at the Triple Nexus
DESCRIPTION:Measuring What Matters explores best practices for designing and implementing inclusive MEL systems that support real-time reflection\, adaptation\, and equity-centered decision-making. Grounded in feminist and locally led approaches\, the series supports Canadian international cooperation actors to shift MEL from donor-driven reporting toward locally led learning that strengthens program quality\, relevance\, and justice across humanitarian\, development\, and peacebuilding contexts. Sessions combine interactive activities\, peer learning\, and practical application\, with supplemental learning materials to keep participants engaged throughout the training series. \nThis three-part series is designed for a broad range of practitioners\, reflecting a commitment to breaking down silos and fostering collaborative\, evidence-based practice. DESCRIPTION:Join us on Wednesday\, March 25th as the AVA Webinar Series presents Humans\, Animals\, and Intimate Partner Violence: Shared Victimizations\, and Shared Solutions\, featuring Dr. Rochelle Stevenson from Thompson Rivers University. \nWednesday\, March 25th\, 2026 \n2 – 3:30pm EDT \nCompanion animals\, or pets\, are an important part of life for many people. General pet ownership estimates for North America indicate that over 60 percent of households have at least one pet\, and pets are increasingly being considered family members. Companion animals are often viewed as children or siblings and anthropomorphized\, and genuinely grieved when they die. However\, the status of companion animals as family members also creates a vulnerability for being victimized along with the human family members in situations of intimate partner violence. \nDr. Stevenson’s talk will discuss her research on intimate partner violence and the inclusion of companion animals in the violent dynamic. In particular\, this presentation will present recent research on the prevalence of the inclusion of animals in situations of intimate partner violence\, the impact on victim/survivors\, the role that companion animals play in healing from violence\, and solutions to support both human and animal victim/survivors of intimate partner violence. \nAbout the Speaker \nDr. Rochelle Stevenson is an Associate Professor of Criminology in the Department of Environment\, Culture\, and Society at Thompson Rivers University\, and faculty member with the Animal and Interpersonal Abuse Research Group (AIPARG). Dr. Stevenson’s research focuses on gender-based violence. Her work includes the intersection of interpersonal violence and violence against animals\, barriers to help-seeking from intimate partner violence\, and sexualized violence. Dr. Stevenson maintains an intersectional and anti-oppression foundation in her research and activism with two overarching goals: naming\, understanding\, and stopping violence in any form\, and advocating for social justice with inclusive social policy and practice. \nAttend here!

Using a trans feminist lens\, we will investigate how power\, resources\, and access shape AI governance systems\, where the key limitations are\, and explore critical opportunities for improving AI governance in Canada and globally. \nBy the end of the session\, participants will: \n– Understand what AI governance means\n– Recognize key limitations in current AI governance approaches\n– See how power\, resources\, and access shape AI governance systems\, using a trans feminist lens.\n– Gain practical ideas for how AI governance processes could be made more equitable and participatory. \nThis is session is part of our Equity and AI learning series that aims to offers a clear and accessible introduction to key issues at the intersection of AI\, ethics\, and equity. Simultaneously\, she has long been active in community organizing and movements for social and environmental justice and has taught on issues surrounding systematic oppression\, structural supremacy\, and liberation theory. Laura is on the advisory board of ZGiRLS\, an organization that supports young girls in sports. She is a founding member of the International Transformational Resilience Network\, which supports the development of capacity to address climate change. They fuel inequalities in accessing essential services\, reduce public resources and create barriers to effectively allocate money for education and healthcare. For women\, girls and groups most at risk of discrimination\, the impacts are significant\, as corruption worsens existing disparities and widens the development gap. \nOn March 5\, Transparency International Canada and CanWaCH will be hosting a crucial discussion on corruption and discrimination\, highlighting progress in improving access to health services for women\, girls and marginalized communities. DESCRIPTION:The GEM Hub is a community-driven network bringing together people with lived experience\, health care providers\, researchers and policy-makers from across Canada. SUMMARY:Whose AI\, Whose Power? An Afro-feminist Perspective on AI
DESCRIPTION:What does an Afrofeminist perspective reveal about AI — including whose knowledge\, realities\, and experiences are centred\, sidelined\, or erased by AI systems? This session draws on insights and practitioner voices from the Made-in-Africa AI–MERL Landscape Study\, which examines how current AI tools align — or fail to align — with African contexts. Vari Magodo-Matimba will unpack findings on cultural bias\, missing languages\, and the reproduction of Western frameworks\, and explore what an Afro-feminist approach reveals about power\, equity\, and AI practice. \n\n\n\n\n\nBy the end of the session\, participants will: \n\nBe introduced to the Made-in-Africa AI–MERL Landscape Study and its key findings\, grounded in African practitioner perspectives\nBe introduced to Afrofeminist and Made-in-Africa perspectives as lenses for examining AI\, power\, and knowledge production\nBetter understand how cultural bias shows up in AI systems\, including through language\, data\, and dominant evaluation frameworks\n\nThis is session is part of our Equity and AI learning series that aims to offers a clear and accessible introduction to key issues at the intersection of AI\, ethics\, and equity. DESCRIPTION:Social justice is an underlying principle for peaceful and prosperous coexistence within and among nations. We uphold the principles of social justice when we promote gender equality\, or the rights of indigenous peoples and migrants. We advance social justice when we remove barriers that people face because of gender\, age\, race\, ethnicity\, religion\, culture or disability. \nFor the United Nations\, the pursuit of social justice for all is at the core of our global mission to promote development and human dignity. The adoption by the International Labour Organization of the Declaration on Social Justice for a Fair Globalization is just one recent example of the UN System’s commitment to social justice. The Declaration focuses on guaranteeing fair outcomes for all\, through employment\, social protection\, social dialogue\, and fundamental principles and rights at work.
