SUMMARY:Co-Designing a Justice-Centered Organizational AI Use Policy
DESCRIPTION:Have an AI policy draft? Thinking about creating one? Not sure what “good” looks like\, or whether using AI\, such as generative AI\, aligns with your mission at all? This session is a collaborative working space — not a lecture. \nTogether\, we will compare\, critique\, and strengthen approaches to organizational AI policies in real time\, using a feminist lens. Participants are invited to bring their own draft policies (or ideas)\, questions\, and challenges. Together we will co-develop a practical AI policy structure\, primarily for using generative AI\, that reflects more equitable commitments\, real-world organizational constraints\, and accountability to the communities we serve. \nThis session will explore: \n\nHow to evaluate whether AI use\, or non-use\, aligns with your organization’s values and mandate\nWhere organizational AI use policies often fall short (liability shield vs. meaningful guidance)\nReal examples of organizational AI approaches\, including those that resist or limit AI use\nCore components of a mission-aligned AI policy\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLearning Outcomes \nBy the end of the session\, participants will leave with: \n\nA collaboratively developed AI policy template\nShared insights from peers navigating similar tensions\nPractical ideas for implementation that go beyond drafting a document\n\nThis is a space for collective learning — whether your organization is experimenting with AI\, cautiously exploring it\, or still deciding whether adoption makes sense. The session structure is intentionally flexible; bring your questions\, priorities\, and real-world policy challenges! \nAttend here!

SUMMARY:Igniting Hope - Inaugural Ottawa Civic Space Summit
DESCRIPTION:A Global Call to Protect What Makes Democracy Work \nAcross the world\, civic space is under attack—from digital surveillance and legal repression to the silencing of activists and shrinking public participation. Yet from the margins to the mainstream\, people are rising to defend the freedoms that make possible democracy\, human rights\, and justice. \nWhen civic space is protected\, communities thrive. It enables people to come together—through community associations\, farmers’ groups and cooperatives\, human rights organizations\, networks of health and education professionals\, climate champions and countless others working for a better world. The freedoms to gather\, speak up\, and organize are not abstract ideals—they are what make it possible to improve lives\, deliver essential services\, defend rights\, and build a more just and sustainable future. \nThe Ottawa Civic Space Summit is a new global platform to resist repression\, reclaim civic power\, and reimagine a more inclusive democratic future. This bold gathering will bring together civil society leaders\, civic space activists\, governments\, donors\, media\, academics\, and private sector allies to ignite hope and drive change. \n\n\n\n\nSummit Objectives \nDefend civic space as a cornerstone of democracy\, rights\, justice and sustainable development. \nCatalyze global momentum and political will to invest in and protect civic freedoms as foundational for social progress across all dimensions of sustainable development. \nReclaim civic space by strengthening collective resistance to its repression and fostering collaboration. \nFoster partnerships among governments\, civil society\, media\, academia\, and the private sector to counter the global rollback of civic space. Elevate the leadership\, voices\, and agency of youth\, women\, Indigenous peoples\, refugees and displaced people\, racialized communities\, LGBTQI+ persons\, and other marginalized groups. \nReimagine civic space to chart inclusive futures grounded in learning\, creativity\, and collective action. Advance transformative research\, innovative tools\, and coordinated strategies that respond to past and present challenges—while inspiring renewed vision\, resilience\, and inclusive civic renewal. \nWhat’s at Stake—and What We’ll Explore \nThe Ottawa Civic Space Summit will explore how civic space enables progress across all sectors—from gender equality\, climate action\, and racial justice to education\, health\, economic prosperity\, and humanitarian response. In a world facing growing crises and polarization\, civic space remains essential to our collective ability to organize\, respond\, and reimagine. \nDiscussions will examine the threats we face today—from digital surveillance and legal repression to disinformation and declining public trust—and the global forces behind them. \nTogether\, we’ll spotlight solutions: stronger solidarity across borders\, inclusive movements\, and bold approaches to safeguarding civic space in multilateral systems\, fragile contexts\, and emerging democracies alike. \nThrough this lens\, participants will engage with urgent questions: \n\nHow do we resist the shrinking of civic space across sectors and geographies?\nHow can donors\, governments\, and communities better fund and protect civic actors—including those in humanitarian and conflict-affected contexts?\nWhat role does civic space play in shaping inclusive economies and democratic renewal?\nHow can we centre intersectionality—across race\, gender\, age\, and Indigenous rights—in efforts to reclaim civic power?\n\nThese conversations will unfold through creative and participatory formats designed to foster deep reflection\, cross-cultural exchange\, connection\, and collective commitment. \nInformed by the latest research and grounded in frontline experience\, the summit will bring together global voices and visionary leaders to share ideas\, build alliances\, and explore concrete pathways to strengthen civic space around the world. \nAttend here!

SUMMARY:Basic Income and Gender-Based Violence: Exploring the transformative potential of a guaranteed livable basic income to support safety and autonomy
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Wednesday\, April 29th\, as the AVA Webinar Series presents Basic Income and Gender-Based Violence: Exploring the Transformative Potential of a Guaranteed Livable Basic Income to Support Safety and Autonomy\, featuring Jennie Pearson and Moss from the Basic Income Youth Collective. \nWednesday\, April 29th\, 2026 \n2 – 3:30pm EDT \nThis session provides an accessible introduction into the world of basic income and what its implementation could mean for people impacted by or at-risk of gender-based violence. Participants will gain insights into the connections between basic income advocacy and anti-violence and gender-equity work\, and will be encouraged to consider the impacts of basic income for supporting people’s safety and autonomy. \nAbout the Speakers \nJennie Pearson\, PhD (she/her) is a community-based researcher and Postdoctoral Fellow at Simon Fraser University. Her research focuses on sex workers’ mutual aid practices and community care models across physical and digital spaces. She is also a member of the Basic Income Youth Collective. Her interest in basic income stems from her research and organizing for sex worker rights\, acknowledging the intersecting impacts of criminalization and poverty on sex workers’ health\, safety and wellbeing. \nMoss is a Guyanese and Peruvian genderqueer person based in Tkaronto/Toronto. During the COVID-19 pandemic\, they became more engaged in social justice\, volunteering with Meals on Wheels and learning about urban accessibility and transportation. \nTheir growing understanding of systemic inequities strengthened their belief in basic income. Moss now builds community among disabled peers\, writes\, and studies social service work at Seneca Polytechnic\, hoping to advance queer liberation\, disability justice\, and youth rights in their future career. \nAttend here!

SUMMARY:Love at First Sight in Toronto!
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE EXHIBITION: \nIf a photo speaks 1\,000 words\, these speak 1\,001. Love at First Sight is not a showcase of technical expertise in composition\, light\, or technique. \nThis exhibition features photos by our Tanzanian\, Peruvian\, and Nepali eye care patients after their sight was restored with cataract surgery or glasses. \nEach photographer was handed a camera and asked to capture what they loved and missed seeing most. \nThese moving images celebrate universal human values and the simple pleasures of family\, friends\, and the beauty in our daily lives. \nWhat do people want to see most when they regain their sight? Love at First Sight offers an intimate answer—through the eyes of former patients who captured what they missed most. \nProceeds from print sales will go directly toward providing sight-restoring care in underserved communities. \nLocation: Arta Gallery\, Distillery District\, 14 Distillery Lane\, Toronto\, ON\, M5A 3C4 \n416-364-2782 — www.artagallery.ca \nFor gallery hours\, please click here! \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis exhibition is running at the Arta Gallery from May 7 to May 10\, 2026.
