SUMMARY:World Health Day
DESCRIPTION:April 7 of each year marks the celebration of World Health Day. From its inception at the First Health Assembly in 1948 and since taking effect in 1950\, the celebration has aimed to create awareness of a specific health theme to highlight a priority area of concern for the World Health Organization. \nOver the past decade\, incredible progress has been made to improve the health\, rights and wellbeing of people around the world.  \nCOVID-19 has threatened to set back these hard fought gains and Canadians are responding. Now more than ever\, the importance of having strong healthcare systems around the world is clear.  \nCelebrate World Health Day by learning about Canada’s long standing leadership role in global health.

SUMMARY:Assessing Canada's Women\, Peace and Security Agenda
DESCRIPTION:A growing body of research makes the links between the security of women and the security of states. In fact\, the very best predictor of a state’s peacefulness is not its level of wealth\, its level of democracy\, or its ethno-religious identity; the best predictor of a state’s peacefulness is how well its women are treated.\n\nCanada’s second five-year National Action Plan on Women\, Peace and Security drew on both research like this and on core Canadian values of respect for human rights\, equality and inclusion. Launched in November 2017\, the plan is now more than halfway through its implementation period.\n\nWhere is progress being made\, what’s changing\, what are the challenges? How is Canada addressing these issues\, what are we learning\, and what are the priorities for the next few years?\n\nTo explore these questions\, join the CIC National Capital Branch and WPSN-C (Women\, Peace and Security Network – Canada) on March 30 for a webinar discussion featuring: Colleen Duggan\, Senior Strategist at the International Development Centre (IDRC)\, Wazhma Frogh\, Peace & Conflict Practitioner & Mediator\, Jacqueline O’Neill\, Canada’s first Ambassador for Women\, Peace\, and Security\, and Beth Woroniuk\, the Policy Lead at the Equality Fund and chair of the Women\, Peace and Security Network-Canada. Elizabeth Kingston\, President of the CIC National Capital Branch\, will introduce this session\, which will be moderated by Zoe Dugal\, Deputy Director of CANADEM.

SUMMARY:Universal home visits empower households to protect maternal and child health
DESCRIPTION:Description: Women and children in Nigeria continue to face high risks of illness and death. A five-year project in Bauchi State\, Northern Nigeria\, implemented universal home visits to pregnant women and their spouses and measured the impact on maternal and child health outcomes. The visits were different in several key ways: they were universal\, covering all households in participating wards; they shared evidence about risk factors that households could act on themselves; and they involved men. \nOn March 25th\, from 2:30 pm to 4 pm GMT\, this webinar will present findings and implications of the project. The visits led to improved maternal and child health outcomes\, and improved attitudes and actions among men. The households also reduced risk factors like heavy work in pregnancy and domestic violence. All this happened without increased use of health facilities. This has important implications for other areas with high maternal and child mortality and limited access to quality services from health facilities. The Bauchi State government has committed to rollout the home visits across the State\, as funding allows. \nLearn more from the IMCHA research team “Video Edutainment: Impact on Maternal and Infant Outcomes in Toro\, Nigeria”. This webinar is co-organised with IMCHA’s West Africa Health Policy and Research Organisation. The event will also be available in French. \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Roundtable on mental health in a global context

SUMMARY:The Lancet Series on Maternal & Child Undernutrition Progress
DESCRIPTION:Nutrition has risen significantly on the global agenda in the last decade\, spurred in part by the findings from the first Lancet Series on Maternal and Child Undernutrition in 2008. The follow-on Series in 2013 came at a critical time alongside the Nutrition for Growth event in London. The growth of the SUN Movement\, the past Nutrition for Growth convenings and five consecutive Global Nutrition Reports have also served to energize nutrition stakeholders\, broaden a coalition of champions and\, most importantly\, generate new investments in the sector. \nHowever\, the COVID-19 pandemic has affected nearly every sector in the world\, hitting low- and middle-income countries and leaving many vulnerable populations at greater risk to the threats of malnutrition. The Series serves as an important milestone moment to inform the nutrition community and re-energize champions to propel the nutrition agenda forward into 2021\, the Nutrition for Growth (N4G) Year of Action\, a roadmap of key events throughout the year. The Year of Action will culminate in the UN Food Systems Summit in September 2021 and the Tokyo N4G Summit in December 2021. \nWe will hear from the following Lancet authors and nutrition champions (in order of appearance): \n\nDr. Ellen Piwoz\, Moderator\nDr. Robert E. Black\, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health\, Baltimore\, MD\nDr. Cesar Victora\, International Center for Equity in Health\, Federal University of Pelotas\nDr. Zulfiqar A. Bhutta\, Centre for Global Child Health\, The Hospital for Sick Children\, Toronto; Institute for Global Health & Development\, The Aga Khan University\nDr. Rebecca Heidkamp\, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health\, Baltimore\, MD\nDr. Sania Nishtar\, Special Assistant of the Prime Minister of Pakistan on Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection\nDr. Meera Shekar\, Global Lead\, Health\, Nutrition & Population at The World Bank\nDr. Ruth Oniang’o\, Founder\, Rural Outreach Africa\nShawn Baker\, Chief Nutritionist\, United States Agency for International Development\n\nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:World Day of Social Justice
DESCRIPTION:Social justice is an underlying principle for peaceful and prosperous coexistence within and among nations. We uphold the principles of social justice when we promote gender equality\, or the rights of indigenous peoples and migrants. We advance social justice when we remove barriers that people face because of gender\, age\, race\, ethnicity\, religion\, culture or disability. \nFor the United Nations\, the pursuit of social justice for all is at the core of our global mission to promote development and human dignity. The adoption by the International Labour Organization of the Declaration on Social Justice for a Fair Globalization is just one recent example of the UN System’s commitment to social justice. The Declaration focuses on guaranteeing fair outcomes for all\, through employment\, social protection\, social dialogue\, and fundamental principles and rights at work.
