SUMMARY:Incubator on Menstrual Equity
DESCRIPTION:Menstrual inequity affects people all over the world\, including people in Canada. There is a critical need to address this issue because menstrual equity is an integral element to achieve gender equality for all. Period poverty\, taboos and stigma and lack of adequate sanitation infrastructure are just a few examples of how menstrual inequity undermines the health\, rights and wellbeing of individuals across Canada. \nIn the lead-up to Menstrual Hygiene Day\, join the Equal Futures Network on May 14\, in our inaugural Incubator session where we unpack these inequities with organizations from across Canada to brainstorm ideas\, share challenges and forge a way to move forward.  In partnership\, we can eliminate industry silos and regional disconnect to create a collaborative and unified collective working to advance equality in menstrual health and hygiene management across Canada.

SUMMARY:Global solidarity to end homophobia\, biphobia\, and transphobia
DESCRIPTION:LGBTIQ2S leaders from East Africa and Canada discuss the importance of strength in community in the face of discrimination and oppression\n\n\n\n\n\nIn recognition of the International Day Against Homophobia\, Biphobia\, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT)\, join the Stephen Lewis Foundation for this timely and compelling conversation about the role of global solidarity in championing health and human rights. Strength to Strength brings together diverse perspectives from community-based organizations in East Africa and Canada that are addressing the impacts of homophobia\, biphobia\, and transphobia and intersecting forms of oppression on LGBTIQ2S communities. \nIt is increasingly clear that there are deadly consequences to ignoring the ways in which global pandemics like HIV and COVID-19 thrive on inequalities\, discrimination\, and social and economic marginalization. Our local struggles for health and rights are globally linked\, and we must work together for wellbeing\, health\, and human rights. Join us to hear directly from LGBTIQ2S leaders about the successes and challenges their organizations are experiencing and the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. \nA Q&A will follow the conversation. \n \nHost: Maurice Tomlinson\, Board Member of the Stephen Lewis Foundation \nModerator: Debbie Owusu-Akyeeah\, Director of the Canadian Centre for Gender and Sexual Diversity \nRemarks: Doug Stollery\, President of the Stollery Charitable Foundation \nPanelists: \n\nKennedy Mwendwa\, Project Officer at HAPA Kenya\, Kenya\nAaron Clevis Mbembe\, Associate Director of Policy and Advocacy at Health Development Initiative\, Rwanda\nChristopher Nkambwe\, Founder and Team Leader at African Centre for Refugees in Ontario\, Canada\nRin Lawrence\, Chair of the Edmonton Public Teachers Local 37 Diversity\, Equity\, and Human Rights Committee and Queer-Straight Alliance\, Canada\nTBD\, Youth Leader\, ODE: Remembered Voices\, Canada\n\nIDAHOBIT is an opportunity to celebrate the LGBTIQ2S communities who are at the forefront of human rights movements and join them in calling for an end to homophobia\, biphobia\, and transphobia and intersecting forms of oppression. Register today to take part in this event.  \n \nPartners in Pride \nThe Stephen Lewis Foundation has launched the Partners in Pride campaign to raise $3 million over the next three years to support LGBTIQ organizations in sub-Saharan Africa. By scaling-up funding to our existing partners and extending support to new partners across the region\, the campaign aims to reach 100\,000 people per year. \nOur LGBTIQ grassroots partner organizations are human rights defenders who have been working at the intersections of health and human rights\, contributing to a global movement for LGBTIQ rights for years. Now as they face a surge in human rights violations\, they’re providing vital health and legal support while advocating for their communities. They’ve built extensive peer networks that allow them to reach and support LGBTIQ community members who are most vulnerable to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic\, and to ensure that people living with HIV have the support they need to adhere to treatment during this global crisis. \nFor more information about Partners in Pride\, please contact slfpride@stephenlewisfoundation.org \nwww.stephenlewisfoundation.org/partners-in-pride \nClick here to subscribe to our e-newsletter for updates and future events.

SUMMARY:IATI Virtual Community Exchange
DESCRIPTION:This IATI ‘Virtual Community Exchange’ (VCE) is the first of two online events taking place in 2021 to bring together the global IATI community. The VCEs will be informal\, interactive and community-driven\, focusing on providing opportunities for shared learning based on practical experiences in engaging with IATI data. \nJoin IATI’s first VCE on 13 April to help us consider IATI’s progress vis-à-vis the current state of transparency and open data in the era of the Sustainable Development Goals. During the VCE\, you will hear about recent and upcoming IATI activities and how you can participate\, be inspired during sessions led by other members of the IATI community and engage with peers in the open data and transparency space. A second VCE to be held in late 2021 will provide additional opportunity for more technically-focused sessions and will showcase even more content from you as members of the IATI community! \nWho can attend the Virtual Community Exchange? How can I register? \nThe Virtual Community Exchange is open to anyone with an interest in transparency\, open data or IATI generally. We expect participation from a broad range of stakeholders\, including from governments\, civil society\, the private sector\, academia and others\, from across the globe. The event will be organised over a half day of diverse sessions. There is no expectation that participants would attend all sessions\, but can ‘pick and choose’ based on their interests and needs. Simultaneous interpretation between English\, French and Spanish will be provided. Read more about how to prepare for the VCE by reading  ‘Getting Ready for the VCE.’ \nPlease register your participation in the event using this link no later than 9 April 2021.\nWhere will the Virtual Community Exchange be held? \nThe Virtual Community Exchange will be held virtually on Zoom. Links to individual sessions will be circulated to registered participant the week before the event. \nWhat will the Virtual Community Exchange agenda cover? How can I contribute? \nThe interactive agenda for the VCE is available here\, offering three parallel sessions simultaneously. Participants are welcome to attend a session from each time slot\, or to ’pick and choose’\, only attending sessions that fit their needs and interests. This preliminary agenda will be updated with more exciting details as the event draws nearer\, so check back regularly for more updates. In the meantime you can also log in to Sched to bookmark sessions you plan to attend\, view your schedule and leave feedback. \nFor any further questions on the first IATI Virtual Exchange\, please contact the IATI Secretariat at info@iatistandard.org or leave a question below!\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:A Successful Marriage: Research-CSO partnerships delivering practical solutions
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Canadian Collaborative for Global Health\, participating projects (‘Labs’) worked in interdisciplinary partnerships with the objective of addressing an urgent data challenge. A key learning from this initiative is that these intersectional partnerships are ideally placed to address many critical issues\, but are not without their challenges. \nIn this 1 hour dialogue\, participants from the Labs will discuss: \n– What are principles of equitable partnership\, and how might this be measured?\n– Are there certain types of work to which research-CSO collaborations are uniquely suited?\n– How can we practically balance the multiple priorities of partners\, particularly when they are in conflict with each other?\n– How do we work equitably with global research and CSO partners\, recognizing power structures which have traditionally undervalued local expertise? \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Assessing Canada's Women\, Peace and Security Agenda
DESCRIPTION:A growing body of research makes the links between the security of women and the security of states. In fact\, the very best predictor of a state’s peacefulness is not its level of wealth\, its level of democracy\, or its ethno-religious identity; the best predictor of a state’s peacefulness is how well its women are treated.\n\nCanada’s second five-year National Action Plan on Women\, Peace and Security drew on both research like this and on core Canadian values of respect for human rights\, equality and inclusion. Launched in November 2017\, the plan is now more than halfway through its implementation period.\n\nWhere is progress being made\, what’s changing\, what are the challenges? How is Canada addressing these issues\, what are we learning\, and what are the priorities for the next few years?\n\nTo explore these questions\, join the CIC National Capital Branch and WPSN-C (Women\, Peace and Security Network – Canada) on March 30 for a webinar discussion featuring: Colleen Duggan\, Senior Strategist at the International Development Centre (IDRC)\, Wazhma Frogh\, Peace & Conflict Practitioner & Mediator\, Jacqueline O’Neill\, Canada’s first Ambassador for Women\, Peace\, and Security\, and Beth Woroniuk\, the Policy Lead at the Equality Fund and chair of the Women\, Peace and Security Network-Canada. Elizabeth Kingston\, President of the CIC National Capital Branch\, will introduce this session\, which will be moderated by Zoe Dugal\, Deputy Director of CANADEM.

SUMMARY:Universal home visits empower households to protect maternal and child health
DESCRIPTION:Description: Women and children in Nigeria continue to face high risks of illness and death. A five-year project in Bauchi State\, Northern Nigeria\, implemented universal home visits to pregnant women and their spouses and measured the impact on maternal and child health outcomes. The visits were different in several key ways: they were universal\, covering all households in participating wards; they shared evidence about risk factors that households could act on themselves; and they involved men. \nOn March 25th\, from 2:30 pm to 4 pm GMT\, this webinar will present findings and implications of the project. The visits led to improved maternal and child health outcomes\, and improved attitudes and actions among men. The households also reduced risk factors like heavy work in pregnancy and domestic violence. All this happened without increased use of health facilities. This has important implications for other areas with high maternal and child mortality and limited access to quality services from health facilities. The Bauchi State government has committed to rollout the home visits across the State\, as funding allows. \nLearn more from the IMCHA research team “Video Edutainment: Impact on Maternal and Infant Outcomes in Toro\, Nigeria”. This webinar is co-organised with IMCHA’s West Africa Health Policy and Research Organisation. The event will also be available in French. \nRegister here
