SUMMARY:Keynote for the CASID CONFERENCE:
DESCRIPTION:Felwine Sarr Decolonization and International Development\, is it not antithetical?  \nThe Canadian Association for the Study of International Development (CASID) is pleased to announce that the keynote speaker for our 2021 Conference will be the renowned Senegalese philosopher\, economist\, and musician–Professor Felwine Sarr\, Duke University. In discussion with Rwando-Canadian scholar Jeanne-Marie Rugira\, Université du Québec à Rimouski\, Dr. Sarr will present his work on African imaginaries and decolonizing International Development Studies from a Senegalese perspective. Challenging us to decolonize our minds when we think about the very idea of ‘development’—as detailed in his widely acclaimed book Afrotopia (2016) —Sarr draws on Africa’s rich and varied philosophies\, cultures and economies to broaden our collective horizon. Sarr challenges the idea that Africa is falling behind and is in need of ‘development.’ Instead\, informed by various imaginaries of the possible\, he offers a radically new way of envisioning the African continent’s future to reclaim its diverse heritages and values\, and creatively mobilize the potential and resources of its people. \n***The event will be bilingual\, with automatic translation in English*** \nSee here the rest of the schedule:\nhttps://www.conftool.org/casid2021/sessions.php \nTo register for the rest of the conference:\nhttps://casid-acedi.ca/annual-conference/2021/registration

SUMMARY:How to Make Space for Youth in International Development Work: Up-and-coming Ideas from the Up-and-coming - Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Youth can offer valuable contributions to development discourse and practice. Despite this recognition\, youth often experience difficult channels to true involvement in international development practice. Amid a professional world that values years of experience and institutional qualifications\, organizations are in need of adopting meaningful and mutually beneficial engagement mechanisms for youth as they step into the development space. In this workshop\, we will explore ways in which organizations might be inviting of\, rather than discourage youth engagement. This workshop will aim to explore common organizational gaps that may just be leaving out some of the most integral voices in development work. We will discuss the following questions: In what ways have we made space for these perspectives? And in what important ways are these voices left out? Are youth engagement programs well prepared to build the next generation of development leaders\, or do they risk falling into recurring colonial cycles? How do we create effective and creative youth channels beyond predetermined spaces that improve PR? \nFacilitators: Yasmin Rajwani\, Natasha Cortes\, University of Ottawa\nTechnical Chair: Kate Grantham\, CASID/FemDev \nhttps://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJIsdeivrzIoHNcwz1Cz8S4PpxRGYvR52jRH

SUMMARY:Maternal Mental Health: The First ACE
DESCRIPTION:Maternal mental health can be thought of as the “first ACE” which then cascades into physical and mental illness in the child and family for generations\, playing a role in the perinatal physical health outcomes of both moms and their babies. SUMMARY:Measuring Access & Rights in Humanitarian Settings
DESCRIPTION:Across diverse and continually changing humanitarian and fragile contexts\, one consistent challenge is measuring impact and positive change. When the impact in question relates to access to critical health services and safeguarding the rights of women\, girls\, and youth\, the challenge is magnified. \nIn our final critical dialogue series\, partners from the Canadian Collaborative for Global Health will discuss the findings and implication of their work in this reality. Together\, panelists will explore the challenges of measuring impact in humanitarian contexts\, particularly in regards to health and rights programming. This 1 hour\, timely conversation will also consider practical resources and tools available for organizations undertaking similar efforts globally\, and panelists will be invited to share their thoughts on the implications of COVID-19 on this work. \nSimultaneous translation (EN/FR) will be available. \nREGISTER HERE.

SUMMARY:#RaiseYourHand: Take action against the largest education disruption in history
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this webinar to learn (or re-learn!) how you can effectively use digital advocacy to #RaiseYourHand for education. \nCOVID-19 has created the largest education disruption in history\, with the number of out-of-school children growing substantially for the first time in decades. We hope you will leave feeling motivated to #RaiseYourHand for education. \n*Disclaimer: This 1 hour webinar is in English only. Recording will be available in English.\n————\nThis webinar is part of Results Canada’s interactive series of webinars organized throughout the year that will equip you with the skills to be an active advocate for eradicating poverty worldwide. SUMMARY:Youth Health Policy Lab
DESCRIPTION:Do you want to respond to and design policy structures for public health advocacy for BIPOC women\, non-binary\, and gender diverse persons?\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nDo you want to respond to and design policy structures for public health advocacy for BIPOC women\, non-binary\, and gender diverse persons? \n  \nAs Youth Policy Advocates from the Ontario Council for International Cooperation’s (OCIC) Youth Policy Maker’s Hub (YPH)\, we are working to create a space in which youth can address Canadian acute healthcare and public health challenges faced by BIPOC women\, non-binary and gender diverse individuals. Our focus is on challenges arising from or exacerbated by COVID-19. \nTo tackle pressing issues\, we will be hosting a Policy Lab for youth (18 – 35 years) to gather young and diverse thinkers who can enrich mainstream policy discussions with innovative ideas and a key youth perspective. This Policy Lab has been designed for active participation and discussion on four focal areas which includes: (1) rise in mental health issues; (2) racism in healthcare and healthcare delivery; (3) technology and disaggregated data in healthcare; and (4) sexual health and reproductive justice. \nEvent Agenda: \n\nA panel discussion featuring key thinkers and experts working within the healthcare field and actively advocating for or thinking about the intersection of BIPOC women and health.\nA debrief session to digest information and prepare for the lab.\nBreakout\, facilitated sessions to explore one of the four topics and inform policy.\nHealth moves beyond the healthcare sector and is influenced by where we live\, who we are\, and how we navigate the world. This is why your voice is needed to help us identify the complex landscape for women’s health in Canada and appropriately reflect it in policy design.\n\nAreas of Focus \n\nRise in mental health issues: The topic explores the disproportionate impact COVID-19 has had on the mental health of BIPOC women\, non-binary individuals and gender diverse individuals. It unpacks the underlying\, systemic factors (e.g. racism\, fragmented systems\, etc.) and triggers (e.g. increased burnout\, rise in gender-based violence\, etc.) that have contributed to this phenomenon.\nRacism in healthcare and healthcare delivery: The topic explores experiences of BIPOC women\, non-binary individuals and gender diverse individuals when navigating and accessing healthcare services. It unpacks the underlying\, systemic factors (e.g. racism\, etc.) and gaps in the system (e.g. lack of culturally competent care\, etc.) that have contributed to this phenomenon during COVID-19.\nTechnology and disaggregated data in public health and healthcare: The topic explores the role technology and data are playing in the healthcare experience of BIPOC women\, non-binary individuals and gender diverse individuals. It unpacks the impact of these two tools on this population\, during COVID-19\, by dissecting design\, mobilization and implementation.\nSexual health and reproductive justice: The topic explores sexual health and reproductive justice issues for BIPOC women\, non-binary individuals and gender diverse individuals. It unpacks the underlying\, systemic factors (e.g. racism\, sexism\, etc.) and the experience of coloured bodies to better understand and uncover differential experiences of this population.\n\nJoin us to learn more and take part in this youth-led initaitive! \n  \nAbout the Youth Policy-Makers Hub \nThe Youth Policy-Makers Hub (YPH) is a signature initiative of OCIC’s Community Engagement and Learning programs. The YPH is an multi-generational initiative that will engage diverse youth from across Ontario in international cooperation policy processes in support of Gender Equality\, Canada’s Feminist International Assistance Policy (FIAP) action areas\, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). \nGlobal problems like gender inequality and climate change affect people of all ages everywhere. These complex problems require holistic inter-generational approaches\, diverse mindsets\, multi-disciplinary methods and multi-sectoral dialogue. OCIC recognizes the wealth of knowledge\, experience and leadership that youth leaders bring to the international cooperation sector in Ontario and beyond. We want to help enable the active participation of youth at local\, national and international policy-making tables to inform decisions that concern their lives\, future and the planet. \n\nRegister here!

SUMMARY:Incubator on Menstrual Equity
DESCRIPTION:Menstrual inequity affects people all over the world\, including people in Canada. There is a critical need to address this issue because menstrual equity is an integral element to achieve gender equality for all. Period poverty\, taboos and stigma and lack of adequate sanitation infrastructure are just a few examples of how menstrual inequity undermines the health\, rights and wellbeing of individuals across Canada. \nIn the lead-up to Menstrual Hygiene Day\, join the Equal Futures Network on May 14\, in our inaugural Incubator session where we unpack these inequities with organizations from across Canada to brainstorm ideas\, share challenges and forge a way to move forward.  In partnership\, we can eliminate industry silos and regional disconnect to create a collaborative and unified collective working to advance equality in menstrual health and hygiene management across Canada.
