SUMMARY:Countering Policy Exclusions: Canada\, disability\, and international commitments Part 2
DESCRIPTION:With the election of a new federal government\, we have invited leaders in civil society organizations to discuss what will and should be key priorities for action around ensuring rights and justice of and with women and girls with disabilities. We will examine how the Global Disability Summit declaration to ensure 15% of development assistance funding to people with disabilities can be addressed in Canada. We will consider whether Canada’s leadership of the G7 in 2025 offers openings to move forward on gender\, disability\, and inclusion. We will explore how the recently released recommendations for action by Canada from the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities on Medical Assistance in Dying Track 2 legislation\, arms exports\, and the representation of women with disabilities can be effectively addressed by the government. The panel will also highlight how women and gender-diverse people with disabilities are playing a leadership role in these areas. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPanelists\nAll four panelists are members of the University of Guelph’s Engendering Disability-Inclusive Development–Genre\, handicap et développement inclusif (EDID-GHDI) partnership (www.edid-ghdi.ca). \nNeil Belanger (he/him) is a member of the Lax Se el Clan in the House of Nikate’en\, of the Gitxsan First Nation and is the Chief Executive Officer of the Indigenous Disability Canada/British Columbia Aboriginal Network on Disability Society (IDC/BCANDS). He has also worked as a Senior Consultant\, working with organizations in the First Nation\, Indigenous\, Health\, Disability\, and Social Services sectors. Neil’s expertise helps to shine a light on the impact of Canada’s international commitments on Indigenous Peoples with disabilities. \nBonnie Brayton (she/her) is the Chief Executive Officer of the Disabled Women’s Network of Canada (DAWN Canada)\, and has worked on issues concerning women with disabilities\, ranging from health equity to gender-based violence to housing to employment. She provides insight into advancing the rights of women with disabilities internationally and within Canada. \nMarijke De Pauw (she/her) is Humanity and Inclusion (HI) Canada’s Specialist in inclusive governance. She has a doctorate in law\, and her main expertise includes the rights of older persons\, the rights of persons with disabilities\, inclusive development\, and support to civil society. Marijke’s experience in international law and policy provides a perspective on the rights and international commitments Canada should prioritize with women\, girls\, and gender-diverse people with disabilities. \nMaureen Haan (she/her) has been the President and CEO of the Canadian Council on Rehabilitation and Work (CCRW) since 2012. Maureen provides expertise in the cross-disability sector\, particularly focusing on employment issues. Her involvement includes being the lead for employment for persons with disabilities for Civil Society on the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD)\, working on the Minister Disability Advisory Group (MDAG)\, and serving as a board member on Accessibility Standards Canada. \nThis event is the third in a series co-hosted by the Live Work Well Research Centre and Dr. Leah Levac’s Canada Research Chair in Critical Community Engagement and Public Policy. DESCRIPTION:2025 theme: Reflecting on the past\, empowering the present\, and shaping the future. \nProudly hosted by the University of Ottawa Heart Institute‘s Canadian Women’s Heart Health Centre\, and Heart & Stroke\, the Canadian Women’s Heart Health Summit is the only event of its kind and has become the national reference point for health professionals seeking up-to-date knowledge of women’s heart\, brain and vascular health. \nBuilding on the success of the previous four Summits\, we have assembled national and international experts and collaborators to further advance women’s heart\, brain\, and vascular health. \nTogether\, we will transform and enhance Canadian women’s lives through research\, awareness\, policy development\, and care. \n2025 Summit Objectives \n\nDiscuss the progress made in sex and gender-based research and practice since the first Summit in 2016\nUnite key collaborators to improve heart\, brain\, and vascular health among women\nIdentify emerging and future areas\, gaps and health disparities in research and clinical practice for heart\, brain\, and vascular conditions affecting women\nChampion and make use of equity-promoting strategies to enhance the adoption of evidence-based research and clinical practices for heart\, brain\, and vascular health in women\n\nThis is an accredited\, clinical\, and scientific opportunity to foster knowledge exchange among a diverse group of collaborators\, including primary care providers\, cardiologists\, neurologists\, gynecologists\, pharmacists\, nurses\, cardiac rehabilitation providers\, allied healthcare professionals\, researchers\, policy-makers\, community partners\, people with lived and living experience (PWLLE)\, and caregivers. \n\nWhen we talk about women\, we mean ALL women. \nSex and Gender are complementary concepts but they are not interchangeable. Sex describes biology\, such as hormones and chromosomes\, while Gender describes our lived experience and how we move through the world. \nIt is important that we understand these differences as they impact the amount of clinical knowledge we have specific to women\, the appropriateness of clinical best practices used to treat women (such as diagnostic procedures and interventions)\, how women seek knowledge and care\, and so much more. \nWhen we talk about women\, we mean all women. \nPeople who identify as women make up just over half of the population in Canada and we choose to take an intersectional approach to understanding health inequities faced by women and how to address them. \nWe understand that women’s health is shaped by many different and overlapping factors\, including sex\, indigeneity\, race\, ability\, sexual orientation\, education\, income\, geographic location and more. This includes cisgender and transgender women\, and non-binary people. \nThis event is an Accredited Group Learning Activity (Section 1) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification Program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada\, and approved by the University of Ottawa’s Office of Continuing Professional Development. This competition provides a unique opportunity for participants to apply their skills and knowledge to real-world challenges faced by mothers in under-resourced settings. \nParticipants will be presented with a case study based on real-life scenarios encountered by Partners In Health Canada in their maternal health initiatives. Teams will analyze the case\, develop innovative solutions\, and present their recommendations to a panel of experts. \nWho Should Participate: \n\nStudents from the fields of public health\, medicine\, nursing\, social sciences\, engineering\, business\, and related disciplines\nStudents passionate about global health and social justice\nTeams of up to 4 participants\n\nHow it Works: \nForm a team of four or join as an individual and be placed in a team. On the day of the competition\, your team will receive a real-life maternal and child health issue that Partners In Health Canada has encountered in Haiti. You will have around 24 hours to analyze the issue and develop a comprehensive program to address it. \nAll necessary information about the country and the specific problem will be provided to you. After developing your solution\, your team will present your proposal to one of our judges. The judges will select their top choices\, and the three best teams will present their proposals to all participants. SUMMARY:Where Does the Money Go? (N4G Side Event)
DESCRIPTION:Where does the money from N4G commitments go\, and which interventions should be prioritized to achieve impact on nutrition and health? \nThis side event will highlight high-impact\, but underfunded\, interventions that have the potential to transform health and nutrition outcomes\, such as strengthening the delivery of community health and nutrition programming and integrating nutrition into primary health care. \nAdditionally\, this event will explore how funding for nutrition\, including from N4G commitments\, could leverage global health initiatives (GHIs) like the Global Financing Facility (GFF) and Gavi\, the Vaccine Alliance and mechanisms such as the World Bank’s International Development Association (IDA). By prioritizing these investments\, N4G commitments can help mobilize investments at the country level and help achieve the World Bank’s Universal Health Coverage (UHC) target of reaching 1.5 billion people with quality\, affordable health services by 2030\, while tackling malnutrition\, improving immunization coverage\, and addressing preventable but deadly diseases like tuberculosis. \nFeatured panelists \n\nTaryn Russell\, Executive Director\, Results Canada (confirmed): Moderator.\nDr. Patricia N’Goran\, Advisor\, National Coordinator of the National Council for Nutrition and Food (confirmed) will give opening remarks.\nHon.
