SUMMARY:Achieving Women's Economic Empowerment - Innovative Models to Addressing Unpaid Care Work
DESCRIPTION:This side event addresses the persistent challenges hindering the achievement of SDGs\, particularly SDG5 and SDG8\, with a focus on unpaid care work’s critical role and grassroots institutions in the achievement of economic empowerment\, especially for women. Women shoulder a disproportionate share of care work responsibilities\, which leads to time poverty and limits their economic empowerment and public leadership opportunities as well as access to social protection services. Care is important for society\, for human development\, and for gender equality.  Panelists including SATHI\, a grassroots organization in Bangladesh\, the Government of Canada\, UNWOMEN\, the Republic of Senegal\, World Renew\, ACT Alliance\, and OCIC will share insights\, best practices\, and lessons learned from implementing women’s economic empowerment programs that seek to transform policies\, practices and social norms that can accelerate the achievement of gender equality and poverty eradication. SUMMARY:Advancing Action on Adaptation: Implications of COP28
DESCRIPTION:Greater support and action on adaptation is a longstanding need\, as outlined in the Global Goal on Adaptation (GGA)\, established under the 2015 Paris Agreement. The estimated cost of adaptation for developing countries could reach up to US$387 billion annually within this decade\, underscoring the importance of addressing the scale and frequency of climate-related disasters and impacts. The GGA is a framework to provide measurable targets\, indicators\, and guidelines aimed at catalysing adaptation initiatives and enhancing financing and support for developing countries. Yet\, putting the GGA into action has proved challenging. \nAt COP28\, Parties identified gaps as part of the first Global Stocktake\, and sought to advance progress on the GGA by adopting the UAE Framework for Global Climate Resilience. \nOn February 22\, join Aga Khan Foundation Canada and the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) for a virtual event on advancing global action on adaptation and the implications of COP28’s adaptation-related outcomes. DESCRIPTION:Join a diverse panel of experts who will share their insights and identify solutions to support and accelerate vaccine delivery and uptake in Africa at a webinar on February 21.We are hosting the second in our series of 90-minute webinars on the challenges of and opportunities for strengthening vaccine delivery and uptake in Africa. Please join us to learn more about this international effort.  \nThe African Union set an ambitious objective of developing\, producing and distributing at least 60% of the vaccines for Africa by 2040 and has established the Partnerships for African Vaccine Manufacturing to enhance the continent’s supply resilience. It aims to increase health security across the continent and globally. At present\, less than 0.1% of the world’s vaccine supply is manufactured in Africa\, and only 1% of vaccines deployed in Africa are manufactured on the continent. \nOther partners\, including Global Affairs Canada\, the Mastercard Foundation and IDRC\, are investing in this objective. Global Affairs Canada’s Global Initiative for Vaccine Equity has invested CAD317 million to increase COVID-19 vaccination among priority groups\, reinforce health-system capacity and diversify vaccine manufacturing capacity in 12 target countries\, most of which are in Africa. The Mastercard Foundation’s Saving Lives and Livelihoods program aims to secure vaccines for a minimum of 50 million individuals and facilitate the administration of vaccinations to millions more across Africa. IDRC is funding research to identify the challenges and issues associated with scaling vaccine manufacturing and distribution in Africa\, and to accelerate the uptake and use of new vaccines as they are rolled out.The discussion will be hosted in English with live French interpretation. \nThis roundtable\, co-sponsored by IDRC and Global Affairs Canada\, is the second in a series to share information and identify ways to help overcome the challenges that lie ahead.  \nRegister here!

DESCRIPTION:Abstract \nEducation is a significant contributor to positive outcomes in all the Sustainable Development Goals. Recognizing the power of intersectional action from experts in education\, health\, technology\, business\, social development\, and others is imperative to achieving a stronger and more sustainable world for current and future generations. To strengthen the connections between sectors\, there needs to be articulated and intentional spaces for specialists to create integrative solutions to complex global problems. \nEvent description \nThe International Development Institute is hosting a World Café for individuals to engage in discussions on the Sustainable Development Goals and how common themes intersect and influence post-secondary education. After lunch\, representatives will facilitate tours of the Barrett Centre for Technology Innovation\, focusing on how technology can be applied to different international development contexts. Morning refreshments and lunch will be served. \nTours of the Barrett Centre for Technology and Innovation are optional. You may exit the venue after lunch if you aren’t interested in touring the facilities. \nPlease note that pictures and videos will be taken at the event and shared online.
