SUMMARY:Celebrating gender and malaria successes and heroes panel discussion
DESCRIPTION:For the 2024 World Malaria Day\, gender is at the forefront of the agenda. Over the last few years\, progress towards malaria elimination have stagnated and in 2022\, 608 000 lost their lives to malaria while 249 million malaria cases were reported. Research from various countries shows that gender-based economic\, cultural\, and social dynamics have had an impact of achieving malaria elimination goals. \nSeveral actors have taken on the task of addressing gender-based biases within malaria policies and programme and with their support\, progress has been made to bridge the gender and equity divide within malaria programmes. \nAlong the sidelines of the 8th Multilateral Initiative on Malaria (MIM) Society conference\, the RBM Partnership and its members would like to pause and reflect on the work done so far\, celebrate the successes achieved and plan for the future. The evening will feature a celebration and an engaging panel discussion to help the audience take stock and plan for the future where we have a malaria-free future. \nRegister here!

DESCRIPTION:Multiple national and international assessments of possible impacts of climate change on infectious diseases have highlighted a range of climate-sensitive diseases and the possibility of i) geographic spread of infectious diseases from endemic areas to regions where they have not been seen before; and ii) more epidemic behavior of mosquito-borne\, and food and water-borne infectious diseases due to climate variability and extreme weather events. \nTo address these threats\, adaptation programs require enhanced activity across public health functions of risk assessment\, surveillance\, and interventions (preventive measures\, public health guidance\, control measures\, risk communications\, and early warning systems). \nNick Ogden\, Senior Research Scientist and Director of Public Health Risk Sciences Division\, will share progress made with this endeavor at the Public Health Agency of Canada.\nAdaptation to climate change-driven infectious disease risks in Canada \nClick here to attend!

SUMMARY:Achieving Women's Economic Empowerment - Innovative Models to Addressing Unpaid Care Work
DESCRIPTION:This side event addresses the persistent challenges hindering the achievement of SDGs\, particularly SDG5 and SDG8\, with a focus on unpaid care work’s critical role and grassroots institutions in the achievement of economic empowerment\, especially for women. Women shoulder a disproportionate share of care work responsibilities\, which leads to time poverty and limits their economic empowerment and public leadership opportunities as well as access to social protection services. Care is important for society\, for human development\, and for gender equality.  Panelists including SATHI\, a grassroots organization in Bangladesh\, the Government of Canada\, UNWOMEN\, the Republic of Senegal\, World Renew\, ACT Alliance\, and OCIC will share insights\, best practices\, and lessons learned from implementing women’s economic empowerment programs that seek to transform policies\, practices and social norms that can accelerate the achievement of gender equality and poverty eradication. SUMMARY:Advancing Action on Adaptation: Implications of COP28
DESCRIPTION:Greater support and action on adaptation is a longstanding need\, as outlined in the Global Goal on Adaptation (GGA)\, established under the 2015 Paris Agreement. The estimated cost of adaptation for developing countries could reach up to US$387 billion annually within this decade\, underscoring the importance of addressing the scale and frequency of climate-related disasters and impacts. The GGA is a framework to provide measurable targets\, indicators\, and guidelines aimed at catalysing adaptation initiatives and enhancing financing and support for developing countries. Yet\, putting the GGA into action has proved challenging. \nAt COP28\, Parties identified gaps as part of the first Global Stocktake\, and sought to advance progress on the GGA by adopting the UAE Framework for Global Climate Resilience. \nOn February 22\, join Aga Khan Foundation Canada and the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) for a virtual event on advancing global action on adaptation and the implications of COP28’s adaptation-related outcomes. Discover how to navigate the challenges of gender-transformative global health programming with AI as your ally and unlock a world of possibilities in project design and qualitative and quantitative data analysis. \nThe three sessions will be held on January 24\, February 14 and February 21\, 2024 from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm EST. Through tips\, examples and learning exercises you will learn how Chat GPT can assist you in summarization\, extracting text\, developing codes\, and generating themes from your qualitative data. While delving into these techniques\, we will share the limitations and considerations to help you navigate this powerful tool effectively. \nSession 3: February 21 – 11:00 am to 12:30 pm EST \nJoin us as we explore Chat GPT’s capacity to create magic in the world of quantitative data analysis. Together we will review the software’s potential for designing surveys\, creating charts and tables\, and coding. Insights into using the paid version (Chat GPT 4) and its data analysis module options will be shared\, including advanced functions and features.
