SUMMARY:International Day of Women and Girls in Science
DESCRIPTION:Science and gender equality are both vital for the achievement of the internationally agreed development goals\, including the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Over the past 15 years\, the global community has made a lot of effort in inspiring and engaging women and girls in science. Yet women and girls continue to be excluded from participating fully in science. \nAt present\, less than 30 per cent of researchers worldwide are women. According to UNESCO data (2014 – 2016)\, only around 30 per cent of all female students select STEM-related fields in higher education. Globally\, female students’ enrolment is particularly low in ICT (3 per cent)\, natural science\, mathematics and statistics (5 per cent) and in engineering\, manufacturing and construction (8 per cent). \nLong-standing biases and gender stereotypes are steering girls and women away from science related fields. As in the real world\, the world on screen reflects similar biases—the 2015 Gender Bias Without Borders study by the Geena Davis Institute showed that of the onscreen characters with an identifiable STEM job\, only 12 per cent were women. \nIn order to achieve full and equal access to and participation in science for women and girls\, and further achieve gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls\, the United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/70/212 declaring 11 February as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.

Today\, globalization\, together with advances in communications and transportation\, has greatly increased the number of people\, who have the desire and the capacity to move to other places. \nThis new era has created challenges and opportunities for societies throughout the world. It also has served to underscore the clear linkage between migration and development\, as well as the opportunities it provides for co-development\, that is\, the concerted improvement of economic and social conditions at both origin and destination. \nMigration draws increasing attention in the world nowadays. Mixed with elements of unforeseeability\, emergency\, and complexity\, the challenges and difficulties of international migration require enhanced cooperation and collective action among countries and regions. The United Nations is actively playing a catalyst role in this area\, with the aim of creating more dialogues and interactions within countries and regions\, as well as propelling experience exchange and collaboration opportunities.

DESCRIPTION:As the global focus on climate change deepens\, there is an opportunity to elevate the dialogue on the need for stronger policies and resource dedication to human health within the climate change mitigation and adaptation framework. Africa Dialogues will bring together thought leaders\, policymakers\, climate activists and health experts to unpack the linkages between climate change and health and spearhead discussions on what must be done to position health at the heart of climate action plans. \nObjectives of the Webinar \nThis session will aim to: \n1. The third town hall will be taking place on November 29\, 2022 focusing on the Asian region. DESCRIPTION:Please join Maternal and Infant Health Canada (a global public health collaborative devoted to improving wellbeing of the environment\, young ones and those who identify as women) and the Global Women’s Health Network (an alumni group of the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health Takemi program in International Health) for a webinar that is open to all\, free of charge. Participants will be able to identify at least 3 problems created by current practices in this arena and proposed public policy solutions to address them.\n\nDr. Judy Norsigian is a co-founder of Our Bodies Ourselves. She served as executive director of the organization from 2001 to 2015 and is currently the chair of the OBOS Board of Directors. Judy has been an author and editor for each of the nine editions of Our Bodies\, Ourselves\, the organization’s landmark book on sexuality and reproductive health. Personal recognitions include an honorary doctorate from Boston University (2007). Additional honors include: being named one of 21 Leaders for the 21st Century by Women’s eNews; Public Service Award from the Massachusetts Public Health Association; Radcliffe College Alumnae Association Annual Recognition Award; Boston YWCA’s Academy of Women Achievers; and the Massachusetts Health Council Award.\n\nKatie Hasson\, PhD\, is the Associate Director of the Center for Genetics and Society\, a public interest nonprofit that works to ensure an equitable future where human genetic and reproductive technologies benefit the common good. She writes\, speaks\, researches\, and teaches about the social and political aspects of human genome editing and reproductive technologies. This represents the highest-level visit from the WHO to Ottawa in years. \nDr. Moeti is keen to engage civil society partners during her visit. DESCRIPTION:The uncertainty of conflict\, climate change\, economic and/or financial crises and pandemics\, continues to call for attention and resources that will redress the inequities that exist along the continuum from local to global\, within and between countries. \nThe COVID-19 global pandemic has upended life for people everywhere and has highlighted the dramatic uncertainty of our times. Pandemic experiences have exacerbated the negative and differential impacts of already unpredictable environmental\, political\, social\, and funding landscapes. Health inequities and exclusion remain deeply entrenched in our systems. With growing calls to decolonize global health and attention paid to equity\, diversity and inclusion\, global health researchers and practitioners must channel attention towards inclusive rebuilding. How do we achieve meaningful inclusion in our research and practice in ways that will advance global health while creating and promoting opportunities for authentic partnerships and diverse leadership? How is inclusion considered and reflected while building stronger\, decolonized spaces? \nThe uncertainties that emerge from climate change\, poverty and growing inequalities and health emergencies have pervasive impacts on communities and people who are already marginalized and disadvantaged. The impacts of such uncertainties reverberate across societies and are experienced in all countries around the world. \nThe 28th Canadian Conference on Global Health (CCGH 2022) will be held from November 21-23 2022 at the Hilton Toronto in downtown Toronto\, and will provide a platform to revisit and re-envision policies\, strategies\, and practices with the aim of identifying barriers and bottlenecks that may hinder attainment of inclusive global health and Universal Health Coverage goals. Dr. Herminia Palacio is the President and CEO of the Guttmacher Institute. She leads the organization in fulfilling its mission to advance sexual and reproductive health and rights in the United States and globally. Dr. Palacio has dedicated her career to advancing health equity; she enjoys more than 25 years of experience across a broad range of sectors\, including academic and clinical medicine\, governmental public health and philanthropy. \nPrior to joining the Guttmacher Institute\, Dr. Palacio served as Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services for the City of New York. She also practiced clinical medicine for nearly 20 years\, including almost 15 years at San Francisco General Hospital during the height of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. She has held a number of full-time or adjunct academic appointments\, including at the University of Texas School of Public Health\, Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and the University of California\, San Francisco\, School of Medicine. Dr. Palacio currently serves as a member on the CUNY Board of Trustees and the RPA Board of Directors. \nAdditionally\, she is serving as a member of the Commonwealth Fund Commission on a National Public Health System. Dr. Palacio received her medical degree from Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York\, a master of public health from the University of California\, Berkeley\, School of Public Health and a BA in biology from Barnard College at Columbia University. DESCRIPTION:Since the first ICFP in Kampala\, Uganda in 2009\, the International Conference on Family Planning (ICFP) has served as a strategic inflection point for the global reproductive health community\, providing a global stage for countries\, organizations\, and individuals to make important commitments and celebrate achievements as the world’s largest scientific conference on family planning and reproductive health. \nICFP has become much more than a conference – it has grown into a platform for researchers\, advocates\, governments and communities; a movement towards achieving access to family planning for all; and a growing community guided by the spirit of partnership\, inclusivity\, innovation and scientific rigor. \nAs the larger family planning community looks “beyond 2020” to realign our goals and reposition for the future of family planning\, ICFP 2022 will be a strategic benchmark as the community prepares to recommit to a goal of universal access by 2030. \n\nRegister here

SUMMARY:Women\, Life\, Freedom: Global Implications of the Women-Led Uprising in Iran
DESCRIPTION:The women’s uprising in Iran has captivated the world. The death of Mahsa Amini in government custody in September sparked protests all over Iran. What started out as a spontaneous women’s resistance has grown and evolved into a sustained cross-sectoral movement calling not only for reform of repressive policies in relation to women\, but for structural changes in society. \nJoin us for an event addressing the situation in Iran and its global implications. We will have a panel discussion consisting of Iranian women who will offer an analysis of the uprising in Iran\, followed by another panel of women active in the women’s movements across different regions who will discuss the global implications of this women-led uprising. The event will showcase how feminists from around the world are working together to build global solidarity in their advocacy for structural change. A dedicated conversation will be held with UN Women senior leadership as part of the event to discuss and present key feminist asks from the NGO CSWs in the Regions and other global women’s movements. SUMMARY:Women and Water: On the frontline of climate change
DESCRIPTION:Climate change impacts us all – with the immediate effects most often felt through water insecurity. So why\, we ask\, is only 3% of climate finance dedicated to water-related adaptation? As 2030 fast approaches\, the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) targets on water and sanitation are still distant hopes\, and water insecurity is growing as the climate crisis becomes a reality for billions of people. As stewards of water\, women and girls confront the impacts of climate change every day yet lack decision making power to influence climate finance commitments to water security. These impacts are deepening the devastating impact of widespread gender inequality in our changing climate. We ask our policy makers and leaders to prioritise investment in gender transformative water security at COP27 and to commit to the clear actions defined in this webinar. \nThe webinar will include statements and presentations to demonstrate water security evidence\, WASH as a pathway for gender equality\, and the essential element of gender responsive climate finance that includes investment in water\, sanitation\, and hygiene. Breakout groups will discuss 5 calls to action as we finalize a Joint Statement for endorsement in lead up to COP27. Please join the dialogue! By some estimates\, it has set back the country’s poverty reduction efforts by ten-years. Cuso International is responding through an innovative partnered initiative in Lima\, Peru.
