DESCRIPTION:On a global scale\, uncertainty has taken on many faces – the war in Ukraine\, a decline in the global Human Development Index\, economic instability\, and climate disasters\, among others – which is leading to a myriad of disruptions in day-to-day living. \nAs stated within the 2021-2022 UNDP Human Development Report\, “The hero and the villain in today’s uncertainty story are one in the same: human choice.” How can our continued choices influence our world of tomorrow? \nAs part of Canada’s International Development Week\, AKFC and Cooperation Canada are hosting an event centered on moving forward in uncertainty. The 2021-2022 UNDP Human Development Report will serve as the basis for an important discussion amongst policy makers and senior leaders in international development\, on uncertainty and the responsibilities we all have in advancing human development. \nMr. Pedro Conceição\, Head of the Human Development Report Office and Lead Author of the report\, will deliver a keynote address to highlight the key themes of the report\, followed by his participation in a panel discussion. SUMMARY:International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation
DESCRIPTION:Female genital mutilation (FGM) comprises all procedures that involve altering or injuring the female genitalia for non-medical reasons and is recognized internationally as a violation of the human rights\, the health and the integrity of girls and women. \nGirls who undergo female genital mutilation face short-term complications such as severe pain\, shock\, excessive bleeding\, infections\, and difficulty in passing urine\, as well as long-term consequences for their sexual and reproductive health and mental health. \nAlthough primarily concentrated in 30 countries in Africa and the Middle East\, female genital mutilation is a universal problem and is also practiced in some countries in Asia and Latin America. Female genital mutilation continues to persist amongst immigrant populations living in Western Europe\, North America\, Australia and New Zealand. \nTo promote the elimination of female genital mutilation\, coordinated and systematic efforts are needed\, and they must engage whole communities and focus on human rights\, gender equality\, sexual education and attention to the needs of women and girls who suffer from its consequences. \n  \n\n

DESCRIPTION:About the webinar \nWe are delighted to be joined by IIPHG\, Professor\, Dr. Kranti Suresh Vora. \nDr Kranti Suresh Vora is an obstetrician turned public health professional. She had her medical degrees from India\, MBBS DGO & MD from B. J. Medical College\, Ahmedabad. He is currently the President of Two Worlds Cancer Collaboration\, a non-profit Society and charitable foundation – a volunteer organization bridging the disparities in cancer control between the two worlds of the higher and lesser-resourced world. \nDr. Carlos Rodriguez-Galindo\nDr. Carlos Rodriguez-Galindo\, M.D.\, is the director of the St. Jude Global program at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and an executive vice president within the organization. He is also the chair of the Department of Global Pediatric Medicine and holds the Four Stars of Chicago Endowed Chair in International Pediatric Research. Rodriguez-Galindo led an institutional effort to become the first World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Centre for Childhood Cancer. SUMMARY:International Day of Women and Girls in Science
DESCRIPTION:Science and gender equality are both vital for the achievement of the internationally agreed development goals\, including the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Over the past 15 years\, the global community has made a lot of effort in inspiring and engaging women and girls in science. Yet women and girls continue to be excluded from participating fully in science. \nAt present\, less than 30 per cent of researchers worldwide are women. According to UNESCO data (2014 – 2016)\, only around 30 per cent of all female students select STEM-related fields in higher education. Globally\, female students’ enrolment is particularly low in ICT (3 per cent)\, natural science\, mathematics and statistics (5 per cent) and in engineering\, manufacturing and construction (8 per cent). \nLong-standing biases and gender stereotypes are steering girls and women away from science related fields. As in the real world\, the world on screen reflects similar biases—the 2015 Gender Bias Without Borders study by the Geena Davis Institute showed that of the onscreen characters with an identifiable STEM job\, only 12 per cent were women. \nIn order to achieve full and equal access to and participation in science for women and girls\, and further achieve gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls\, the United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/70/212 declaring 11 February as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.

Today\, globalization\, together with advances in communications and transportation\, has greatly increased the number of people\, who have the desire and the capacity to move to other places. \nThis new era has created challenges and opportunities for societies throughout the world. It also has served to underscore the clear linkage between migration and development\, as well as the opportunities it provides for co-development\, that is\, the concerted improvement of economic and social conditions at both origin and destination. \nMigration draws increasing attention in the world nowadays. Mixed with elements of unforeseeability\, emergency\, and complexity\, the challenges and difficulties of international migration require enhanced cooperation and collective action among countries and regions. The United Nations is actively playing a catalyst role in this area\, with the aim of creating more dialogues and interactions within countries and regions\, as well as propelling experience exchange and collaboration opportunities.

Judy has been an author and editor for each of the nine editions of Our Bodies\, Ourselves\, the organization’s landmark book on sexuality and reproductive health. Personal recognitions include an honorary doctorate from Boston University (2007). Additional honors include: being named one of 21 Leaders for the 21st Century by Women’s eNews; Public Service Award from the Massachusetts Public Health Association; Radcliffe College Alumnae Association Annual Recognition Award; Boston YWCA’s Academy of Women Achievers; and the Massachusetts Health Council Award.\n\nKatie Hasson\, PhD\, is the Associate Director of the Center for Genetics and Society\, a public interest nonprofit that works to ensure an equitable future where human genetic and reproductive technologies benefit the common good. She writes\, speaks\, researches\, and teaches about the social and political aspects of human genome editing and reproductive technologies. DESCRIPTION:The uncertainty of conflict\, climate change\, economic and/or financial crises and pandemics\, continues to call for attention and resources that will redress the inequities that exist along the continuum from local to global\, within and between countries. \nThe COVID-19 global pandemic has upended life for people everywhere and has highlighted the dramatic uncertainty of our times. Pandemic experiences have exacerbated the negative and differential impacts of already unpredictable environmental\, political\, social\, and funding landscapes. Health inequities and exclusion remain deeply entrenched in our systems. With growing calls to decolonize global health and attention paid to equity\, diversity and inclusion\, global health researchers and practitioners must channel attention towards inclusive rebuilding. How do we achieve meaningful inclusion in our research and practice in ways that will advance global health while creating and promoting opportunities for authentic partnerships and diverse leadership? How is inclusion considered and reflected while building stronger\, decolonized spaces? \nThe uncertainties that emerge from climate change\, poverty and growing inequalities and health emergencies have pervasive impacts on communities and people who are already marginalized and disadvantaged. The impacts of such uncertainties reverberate across societies and are experienced in all countries around the world. \nThe 28th Canadian Conference on Global Health (CCGH 2022) will be held from November 21-23 2022 at the Hilton Toronto in downtown Toronto\, and will provide a platform to revisit and re-envision policies\, strategies\, and practices with the aim of identifying barriers and bottlenecks that may hinder attainment of inclusive global health and Universal Health Coverage goals. DESCRIPTION:CanWaCH is hosting our virtual Annual General Meeting (AGM) and we hope to see you there!\nDate: Tuesday\, November 15\, 2022 \nTime: 10:00 a.m – 11:00 a.m. EST \nWe are pleased to invite you to this year’s Annual General Meeting of members for the Canadian Partnership for Women and Children’s Health (CanWaCH) taking place Tuesday\, November 15\, 2022 from 10 to 11 a.m. EST. This is your opportunity as a CanWaCH member to engage in the direction and operations of the organization and the future of our great partnership. \nThe AGM is virtual and will feature key CanWaCH strategic and operational updates during the business meeting followed by an inspiring keynote speaker. A cultural competency training workshop open to all members will be held later in the afternoon. Please note you must register separately for the AGM and the workshop (see below). \nREGISTER HERE FOR THE AGM \n*Please note that only active CanWaCH member organizations have voting rights at the AGM. Pre-voting will be available and details will be sent to the member voting rep on file.  \n\nKeynote Speaker: Dr. Herminia Palacio\n \nWe are thrilled to announce Dr. Herminia Palacio as the keynote speaker of our Annual General Meeting! Dr. Herminia Palacio is the President and CEO of the Guttmacher Institute. She leads the organization in fulfilling its mission to advance sexual and reproductive health and rights in the United States and globally. Dr. Palacio has dedicated her career to advancing health equity; she enjoys more than 25 years of experience across a broad range of sectors\, including academic and clinical medicine\, governmental public health and philanthropy. \nPrior to joining the Guttmacher Institute\, Dr. Palacio served as Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services for the City of New York. She also practiced clinical medicine for nearly 20 years\, including almost 15 years at San Francisco General Hospital during the height of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. She has held a number of full-time or adjunct academic appointments\, including at the University of Texas School of Public Health\, Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and the University of California\, San Francisco\, School of Medicine. Dr. Palacio currently serves as a member on the CUNY Board of Trustees and the RPA Board of Directors. \nAdditionally\, she is serving as a member of the Commonwealth Fund Commission on a National Public Health System. Dr. Palacio received her medical degree from Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York\, a master of public health from the University of California\, Berkeley\, School of Public Health and a BA in biology from Barnard College at Columbia University.
