SUMMARY:International Day of Women and Girls in Science
DESCRIPTION:Science and gender equality are both vital for the achievement of the internationally agreed development goals\, including the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Over the past 15 years\, the global community has made a lot of effort in inspiring and engaging women and girls in science. Yet women and girls continue to be excluded from participating fully in science. \nAt present\, less than 30 per cent of researchers worldwide are women. According to UNESCO data (2014 – 2016)\, only around 30 per cent of all female students select STEM-related fields in higher education. Globally\, female students’ enrolment is particularly low in ICT (3 per cent)\, natural science\, mathematics and statistics (5 per cent) and in engineering\, manufacturing and construction (8 per cent). \nLong-standing biases and gender stereotypes are steering girls and women away from science related fields. As in the real world\, the world on screen reflects similar biases—the 2015 Gender Bias Without Borders study by the Geena Davis Institute showed that of the onscreen characters with an identifiable STEM job\, only 12 per cent were women. \nIn order to achieve full and equal access to and participation in science for women and girls\, and further achieve gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls\, the United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/70/212 declaring 11 February as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.

SUMMARY:International Migrants Day
DESCRIPTION:Throughout human history\, migration has been a courageous expression of the individual’s will to overcome adversity and to live a better life. Today\, globalization\, together with advances in communications and transportation\, has greatly increased the number of people\, who have the desire and the capacity to move to other places. \nThis new era has created challenges and opportunities for societies throughout the world. It also has served to underscore the clear linkage between migration and development\, as well as the opportunities it provides for co-development\, that is\, the concerted improvement of economic and social conditions at both origin and destination. \nMigration draws increasing attention in the world nowadays. Mixed with elements of unforeseeability\, emergency\, and complexity\, the challenges and difficulties of international migration require enhanced cooperation and collective action among countries and regions. The United Nations is actively playing a catalyst role in this area\, with the aim of creating more dialogues and interactions within countries and regions\, as well as propelling experience exchange and collaboration opportunities.

SUMMARY:Child Marriage Roundtable: Unpacking Gender Violence
DESCRIPTION:Each year\, 12 million girls are married before they turn 18. That is 22 girls every minute whose childhood\, dreams and education are cut short. The numbers are almost unfathomable: 650 million women and girls alive today were married as children – some organizations put this number as high as 700 million\, or just under 10% of the global population. \nJoin us on Thursday\, December 7th at 10:00 a.m. ET for a roundtable discussion with a panel of industry experts as we discuss this tragic form of gender-based violence. \nThere are many factors at play when a child ends up in an early or forced marriage. Most commonly\, girls from marginalized communities\, often in fragile or conflict-affected settings are the most at risk with poverty\, gender inequality\, tradition\, limited access to education and socially normalized perceptions of protection all contributing to what is at its core\, a fundamental violation of human rights. \nClick here to register!

It was used to describe the Dahomey Amazons\, who were an all female military regiment of the Kingdom of Dahomey (Benin). Although the Mino did not have their own children\, they were viewed as warriors\, advocates\, protectors\, caregivers\, and mother figures to their communities. We firmly believe in celebrating a holistic experience of motherhood\, parenting and perinatal health that engages all aspects of the full experience of Black and racialized birthing persons and parents. Whether you are nurturing and safeguarding your family or your community\, we recognize and appreciate the invaluable work you do each day to uplift us all. \nClick here for more information and to register!

SUMMARY:Community-led Solutions: Building Capacity and Bridging Sustainable Development Goal Gaps
DESCRIPTION:As the midpoint of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) draws near\, the Mothers Matter Centre is orchestrating a national virtual event. This event aims to reflect on Canada’s progress toward achieving Agenda 2030. Over the past five years\, approximately 1.3 million newcomers have made Canada their permanent home. Despite Canada’s notable ranking on the Human Development Index\, disparities persist\, particularly among newcomers\, refugees\, and Indigenous communities. These disparities hinder their access to essential rights and impede their journey toward achieving the SDG targets. \nGovernment policy makers\, global initiatives\, social service organizations\, civil society\, and the community members\, can work together to bridge the existing SDG gaps in socially and economically isolated communities. The SDGs National Event will explore how local communities and passionate activists play a pivotal role in driving social\, economic\, and environmental progress on a local\, global\, and international scale. Learn about successful projects and initiatives led by community members\, showcasing their resilience\, innovation\, and dedication. It will also highlight programs and practices that can assist vulnerable communities in addressing their local needs and providing solutions to bridge the SDG gaps in isolated Canadian communities. The Mothers Matter Centre’s goal is to create an inclusive platform where SDG experts\, government representatives\, women’s rights activists\, and community workers can share their experiences and learn from one another. This exchange of knowledge and ideas will propel Canada’s progress toward the SDGs. \nRSVP here!

SUMMARY:Gender Lens Investing: The Role of Translation
DESCRIPTION:Gender lens investing is an approach that integrates a gender analysis into investment analysis and decision-making to better inform investment decisions and advance gender equality. However\, gender experts and finance organizations often lack the capacity to integrate their analyses. This problem exists in traditional banks or microfinance institutions where women often still struggle to access appropriate financial services\, and in the unequal structures of power in the broader structures of finance that shape the global economy. Translation work between finance and gender is essential to closing the analysis gap and making gender lens investing work effectively. \nThis event is sponsored by WUSC\, in partnership with Criterion Institute as part of the ARISE grant funded by Global Affairs Canada\, and CAFIID’s Gender Lens Investing Community of Practice (CoP)\, with support from the Government of Canada’s Investment Readiness Program (IRP). As part of our ecosystem building mandate\, we will bring together members of CAFIID\, Cooperation Canada’s Innovative finance working group\, Table of Impact Investment Practitioners (TIIP) as well as government stakeholders. \nOverall objective:\n– Create space amongst CAFIID members and relevant GLI stakeholders to reflect on how translation can facilitate stronger GLI approaches. \nSpecific objectives:\n– Build knowledge and collaboration amongst CAFIID members and other GLI stakeholders\n– Identify the role that CSOs/WROs can play in advancing a GLI translation function\n– Identify lessons for GAC and other major donor/investors related to GLI and translation\n– Share learning around partnerships between CSOs and private sector \nClick here to register!
