SUMMARY:International Day of Women and Girls in Science
DESCRIPTION:Science and gender equality are both vital for the achievement of the internationally agreed development goals\, including the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Over the past 15 years\, the global community has made a lot of effort in inspiring and engaging women and girls in science. Yet women and girls continue to be excluded from participating fully in science. \nAt present\, less than 30 per cent of researchers worldwide are women. According to UNESCO data (2014 – 2016)\, only around 30 per cent of all female students select STEM-related fields in higher education. Globally\, female students’ enrolment is particularly low in ICT (3 per cent)\, natural science\, mathematics and statistics (5 per cent) and in engineering\, manufacturing and construction (8 per cent). \nLong-standing biases and gender stereotypes are steering girls and women away from science related fields. As in the real world\, the world on screen reflects similar biases—the 2015 Gender Bias Without Borders study by the Geena Davis Institute showed that of the onscreen characters with an identifiable STEM job\, only 12 per cent were women. \nIn order to achieve full and equal access to and participation in science for women and girls\, and further achieve gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls\, the United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/70/212 declaring 11 February as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.

Today\, globalization\, together with advances in communications and transportation\, has greatly increased the number of people\, who have the desire and the capacity to move to other places. \nThis new era has created challenges and opportunities for societies throughout the world. It also has served to underscore the clear linkage between migration and development\, as well as the opportunities it provides for co-development\, that is\, the concerted improvement of economic and social conditions at both origin and destination. \nMigration draws increasing attention in the world nowadays. Mixed with elements of unforeseeability\, emergency\, and complexity\, the challenges and difficulties of international migration require enhanced cooperation and collective action among countries and regions. The United Nations is actively playing a catalyst role in this area\, with the aim of creating more dialogues and interactions within countries and regions\, as well as propelling experience exchange and collaboration opportunities.

The numbers are almost unfathomable: 650 million women and girls alive today were married as children – some organizations put this number as high as 700 million\, or just under 10% of the global population. \nJoin us on Thursday\, December 7th at 10:00 a.m. ET for a roundtable discussion with a panel of industry experts as we discuss this tragic form of gender-based violence. \nThere are many factors at play when a child ends up in an early or forced marriage. Narayan is the international climate and health campaigner for Health Care Without Harm (HCWH)\, an organization that works to transform health care worldwide so that it reduces its environmental footprint. \nNarayan is based in India and has more than two decades of campaigning and advocacy experience in environmental justice issues. Her work focuses on providing legal\, media and scientific research support to the residents of pollution-affected communities and workers exposed to toxic chemicals.
