SUMMARY:Advancing Action on Adaptation: Implications of COP28
DESCRIPTION:Greater support and action on adaptation is a longstanding need\, as outlined in the Global Goal on Adaptation (GGA)\, established under the 2015 Paris Agreement. The estimated cost of adaptation for developing countries could reach up to US$387 billion annually within this decade\, underscoring the importance of addressing the scale and frequency of climate-related disasters and impacts. The GGA is a framework to provide measurable targets\, indicators\, and guidelines aimed at catalysing adaptation initiatives and enhancing financing and support for developing countries. Yet\, putting the GGA into action has proved challenging. \nAt COP28\, Parties identified gaps as part of the first Global Stocktake\, and sought to advance progress on the GGA by adopting the UAE Framework for Global Climate Resilience. \nOn February 22\, join Aga Khan Foundation Canada and the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) for a virtual event on advancing global action on adaptation and the implications of COP28’s adaptation-related outcomes. The event will include presentations\, a panel discussion with experts\, followed by a Q&A\, and interactive discussion groups. \nThrough this virtual event\, we aim to: \n– Support Canadian organizations and other interested practitioners in better understanding adaptation-related outcomes of COP28\, including progress on the GGA.\n– Consider approaches for connecting local knowledge and scientific data to strengthen resilience through a case study on Aga Khan Agency for Habitat adaptation initiatives in vulnerable mountain environments.\n– Engage participants in an interactive discussion on how GGA-related outcomes may affect local adaptation initiatives\, particularly those related to monitoring\, evaluation\, and learning frameworks. \nPresenters \n– Deo Raj Gurung\, Chief Scientist for Aga Khan Agency for Habitat (AKAH)\n– Emilie Beauchamp\, Lead\, Monitoring\, Evaluation and Learning for Adaptation\, Resilience Program for International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) \nWith remarks from Liam Thorne\, Program and Partnerships Officer\, AKFC \nPanelists \nModerator:\n– Emilie Beauchamp\, Lead\, Monitoring\, Evaluation and Learning for Adaptation\, Resilience Program for International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD)\n– Emily Goodwin\, Senior Manager\, Climate Policy for Rare\n– Kristen Ostling\, Senior Advisor\, Policy and Advocacy for Plan International Canada \nAdditional panelists will be announced. \nAbout the organizers \nThis event is co-hosted by AKFC and IISD as part of AKFC’s Speaker Series on Climate Change Resilience and Adaptation and IISD’s Nature for Climate Adaptation Initiative (NCAI)\, supported by Global Affairs Canada. \nAKFC’s Speaker Series on Climate Change Resilience and Adaptation \nThe series aims to bring together practitioners\, advocates\, and others who share an interest in exploring and discussing how we may use the climate crisis as a catalyst for great leaps in addressing the complex challenges involved in confronting climate change in a manner that advances sustainable development\, well-being\, and resilient livelihoods for all. \nClick here to register!

SUMMARY:Webinar on strengthening vaccine delivery and uptake in Africa: How can research help?
DESCRIPTION:Join a diverse panel of experts who will share their insights and identify solutions to support and accelerate vaccine delivery and uptake in Africa at a webinar on February 21.We are hosting the second in our series of 90-minute webinars on the challenges of and opportunities for strengthening vaccine delivery and uptake in Africa. Please join us to learn more about this international effort. \nThe African Union set an ambitious objective of developing\, producing and distributing at least 60% of the vaccines for Africa by 2040 and has established the Partnerships for African Vaccine Manufacturing to enhance the continent’s supply resilience. It aims to increase health security across the continent and globally. At present\, less than 0.1% of the world’s vaccine supply is manufactured in Africa\, and only 1% of vaccines deployed in Africa are manufactured on the continent. \nOther partners\, including Global Affairs Canada\, the Mastercard Foundation and IDRC\, are investing in this objective. Global Affairs Canada’s Global Initiative for Vaccine Equity has invested CAD317 million to increase COVID-19 vaccination among priority groups\, reinforce health-system capacity and diversify vaccine manufacturing capacity in 12 target countries\, most of which are in Africa. The Mastercard Foundation’s Saving Lives and Livelihoods program aims to secure vaccines for a minimum of 50 million individuals and facilitate the administration of vaccinations to millions more across Africa. IDRC is funding research to identify the challenges and issues associated with scaling vaccine manufacturing and distribution in Africa\, and to accelerate the uptake and use of new vaccines as they are rolled out.The discussion will be hosted in English with live French interpretation. \nThis roundtable\, co-sponsored by IDRC and Global Affairs Canada\, is the second in a series to share information and identify ways to help overcome the challenges that lie ahead. \nRegister here!

SUMMARY:World Day of Social Justice
DESCRIPTION:Social justice is an underlying principle for peaceful and prosperous coexistence within and among nations. We uphold the principles of social justice when we promote gender equality\, or the rights of indigenous peoples and migrants. We advance social justice when we remove barriers that people face because of gender\, age\, race\, ethnicity\, religion\, culture or disability. \nFor the United Nations\, the pursuit of social justice for all is at the core of our global mission to promote development and human dignity. The adoption by the International Labour Organization of the Declaration on Social Justice for a Fair Globalization is just one recent example of the UN System’s commitment to social justice. The Declaration focuses on guaranteeing fair outcomes for all\, through employment\, social protection\, social dialogue\, and fundamental principles and rights at work.

\nClick here to register!

SUMMARY:Who has power? Agency in Development and Justice
DESCRIPTION:Join World Renew\, Citizens for Public Justice (CPJ)\, and International Justice Mission (IJM) Canada on February 7 at Redeemer University. Learn how our programs are removing barriers to agency and contributing to holistic community development. \nInspired by our faith\, we believe that our international development activities must acknowledge and honour the unique image of God in each person involved. In relation to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals\, this means that all efforts must continue to centre the agency of the individuals and communities most impacted by injustice and inequality. \n– World Renew as a Sponsorship Agreement Holder with the Canadian government\, will be highlighting its experience partnering with individuals and Constituent Groups across Canada to support refugees overseas to resettle in Canada.\n– IJM seeks to end the everyday violences that violates human rights and prevents sustainable development. IJM will highlight why every intervention to combat human trafficking\, forced labour\, sexual abuse\, and gender-based violence must be trauma-informed and survivor-led.\n– CPJ as a national policy advocacy organization works to center public justice in policy debates. CPJ will highlight how its work on refugee and migrant rights – such as campaigns to end immigration detention and securing healthcare access for all regardless of immigration status – aims to strengthen the agency of those who migrate or seek asylum in Canada. \nClick here to register!

SUMMARY:International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation
DESCRIPTION:Female genital mutilation (FGM) comprises all procedures that involve altering or injuring the female genitalia for non-medical reasons and is recognized internationally as a violation of the human rights\, the health and the integrity of girls and women. \nGirls who undergo female genital mutilation face short-term complications such as severe pain\, shock\, excessive bleeding\, infections\, and difficulty in passing urine\, as well as long-term consequences for their sexual and reproductive health and mental health. \nAlthough primarily concentrated in 30 countries in Africa and the Middle East\, female genital mutilation is a universal problem and is also practiced in some countries in Asia and Latin America. Female genital mutilation continues to persist amongst immigrant populations living in Western Europe\, North America\, Australia and New Zealand. \nTo promote the elimination of female genital mutilation\, coordinated and systematic efforts are needed\, and they must engage whole communities and focus on human rights\, gender equality\, sexual education and attention to the needs of women and girls who suffer from its consequences. \n  \n\n

SUMMARY:International Day of Women and Girls in Science
DESCRIPTION:Science and gender equality are both vital for the achievement of the internationally agreed development goals\, including the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Over the past 15 years\, the global community has made a lot of effort in inspiring and engaging women and girls in science. Yet women and girls continue to be excluded from participating fully in science. \nAt present\, less than 30 per cent of researchers worldwide are women. According to UNESCO data (2014 – 2016)\, only around 30 per cent of all female students select STEM-related fields in higher education. Globally\, female students’ enrolment is particularly low in ICT (3 per cent)\, natural science\, mathematics and statistics (5 per cent) and in engineering\, manufacturing and construction (8 per cent). \nLong-standing biases and gender stereotypes are steering girls and women away from science related fields. As in the real world\, the world on screen reflects similar biases—the 2015 Gender Bias Without Borders study by the Geena Davis Institute showed that of the onscreen characters with an identifiable STEM job\, only 12 per cent were women. \nIn order to achieve full and equal access to and participation in science for women and girls\, and further achieve gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls\, the United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/70/212 declaring 11 February as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.

SUMMARY:International Migrants Day
DESCRIPTION:Throughout human history\, migration has been a courageous expression of the individual’s will to overcome adversity and to live a better life. Today\, globalization\, together with advances in communications and transportation\, has greatly increased the number of people\, who have the desire and the capacity to move to other places. \nThis new era has created challenges and opportunities for societies throughout the world. It also has served to underscore the clear linkage between migration and development\, as well as the opportunities it provides for co-development\, that is\, the concerted improvement of economic and social conditions at both origin and destination. \nMigration draws increasing attention in the world nowadays. Mixed with elements of unforeseeability\, emergency\, and complexity\, the challenges and difficulties of international migration require enhanced cooperation and collective action among countries and regions. The United Nations is actively playing a catalyst role in this area\, with the aim of creating more dialogues and interactions within countries and regions\, as well as propelling experience exchange and collaboration opportunities.
