SUMMARY:Presentation and Discussion by Faysal El-Kak from the American University of Beirut\, Vice President of FIGO on sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR) and gender equality and inclusion
DESCRIPTION:Location: IDRC offices: 45 O’Connor Street\, 6th Floor \nDate and time: March 28\, 2023 9:00 AM-10:30 AM \nTo attend virtually: Click here to join the meeting \n\nMeeting ID: 222 179 504 096\nPasscode: ngQyy9\n\nDespite the progress that have been made with sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) at the conceptual and practical levels\, challenges continue to deter the path to more equitable health outcomes for all. From COVID-19 epidemic threat to the inclusivity failure\, to legal and financial barriers\, and restrictive gender norms\, essential SRHR services are the first to fall out and to have its links to SDG2030 strained. Adolescents/youth\, refugees\, and women in menopausal transition are important to include in SRH\, as well as including SRH services in the essential package of health services remains a primary task. There is a need for a true representation of diversity of voices and variety of relevant partners to regain SRHR and strengthen its positioning globally to contribute to achievement of SDGs. Specific examples from an IDRC-funded project that examines sexual and reproductive rights and the link between these rights and sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) among Syrian women refugees in Lebanon will be highlighted. \nDr Faysal El Kak is Vice President of FIGO (International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics)\, a Director of the Women Integrated Sexual Health (WISH) Program and clinical associate of OBGYN and Female Sexual Dysfunction\, Department of OBGYN\, American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC)\, a senior lecturer of Health Behavior\, Sexuality and Public Health at the Faculty of Health Sciences at the American University of Beirut (AUB). He is involved in clinical and academic/research services in both academic and community levels\, this includes running a community clinic where he works on services\, research\, and advocacy related to Syrian refugee health and marginalized Lebanese in the host community\, especially women’s health. Dr El Kak has published two books on maternal mortality\, and several book chapters\, as well as many media articles and appearances. \nFor more information or to RSVP to attend in person\, please email Chaitali Sinha\, Senior Program Specialist at csinha@idrc.ca

SUMMARY:Neglected Tropical Diseases and WASH\, Spotlight on Trachoma
DESCRIPTION:In honor of World Water Day on March 22 and the UN Conference on Water\, the Canadian Network for Neglected Tropical Diseases (CNNTD)\, in partnership with Operation Eyesight Universal and the University of Calgary\, Alberta Council for Global Cooperation\, highlight Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) as diseases needing equitable access to Water\, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) for their prevention and management. NTDs affect over 1.7 billion people (globally\, 1 in 5)\, most of whom live in under-resourced and underserved communities that lack access to water and sanitation and primary health care. Although the scale of NTDs as a public health problem makes the solutions seem daunting\, this session shares successes in NTD prevention and treatment globally that have been supported by Canadians within the global health community. One organization doing NTD elimination through global partnership is Operation Eyesight. The provision of clean water\, along with other critical efforts\, is preventing and supporting the treatment of Trachoma in Kenya\, Zambia and Ethiopia. Learn about impact stories\, WHO strategies to eliminate Trachoma and other NTDs\, and Canada’s contributions towards achieving health for all. \nClick here to register!

SUMMARY:The XX Paradox: The State of Women and Leadership in Health
DESCRIPTION:Women are 70% of the health and care workforce but hold only 25% of leadership roles. This is The XX Paradox in Health. Around the world\, women health workers are shaping health and leading health in their communities but are underpaid\, often unpaid\, undervalued and under protected. Six million women community health workers are subsidizing global health through their unpaid work. Global health is weakened by inequity and lack of diversity in leadership. This is what Women in Global Health and allies are fighting to change. \nJoin us on Thursday\, March 16 2023 at 08:00 – 09:15 EST when\, against the backdrop of the 67th Commission on the Status of Women\, Women in Global Health will be launching our new flagship publication: The State of Women and Leadership in Global Health. This virtual event will present evidence on the position of women in global health and new research on women’s leadership in health from Women in Global Health Chapters in Kenya\, Nigeria and India. \nThis event will bring health leaders together to discuss the actions needed to transform the current status quo. \nClick here to register!

SUMMARY:Engaging Men for Gender Equality
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Tuesday\, March 14th at 10:30am ET for a panel discussion on successfully engaging men for gender equality. \nCo-sponsored by Global Affairs Canada\, this panel will draw on initiatives\, programs and experiences from World Vision Canada’s partnership with World Vision Tanzania\, as well as Equimundo’s work in Rwanda and HOPEM Network’s work in Mozambique with younger men to showcase how engaging men as allies for gender equality is changing lives and creating a more gender-just world. \nIn order to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls to reach their life’s full potential\, discriminatory gender norms must be challenged and transformed at all levels – individual\, relationships\, community\, and society. While women and girls have enormous potential as advocates and change agents for their own equality\, men and boys also have a crucial role to play as allies and active participants in gender-transformative change. \nRegister for this free event today – we hope to see you there! \nThe event will be conducted in English\, with simultaneous French translation available.

SUMMARY:Launch: Inequality Monitoring in Sexual\, Reproductive\, Maternal\, Newborn\, Child and Adolescent Health eLearning course
DESCRIPTION:Inequities in sexual\, reproductive\, maternal\, newborn\, child and adolescent health (SRMNCAH) throughout the world mean that certain population subgroups have systematically worse health outcomes and poorer access to services and interventions than others. Addressing inequities in SRMNCAH is central to achieving universal health coverage\, protecting human rights\, advancing gender equality\, combating discrimination and improving the social determinants of health. Making progress in each of these areas is also vital to achieve WHO’s Triple Billion targets and accelerate towards the health-related SDGs. \nRegular monitoring and review of inequalities in SRMNCAH by stakeholders at regional\, national and subnational levels is critical for evidence based decision making. The results of this inequality monitoring can also be used as an input (alongside other forms of knowledge and evidence) to determine where efforts and resources are needed to improve health and well-being for disadvantaged subgroups. \nThis informational webinar marks the release of a new WHO eLearning course: Inequality Monitoring in Sexual\, Reproductive\, Maternal\, Newborn\, Child and Adolescent Health. The course introduces learners to a five-step approach to inequality monitoring in the context of SRMNCAH\, preparing them to apply these steps across diverse contexts and settings. The two-hour\, interactive eLearning course is delivered through OpenWHO.org\, which hosts free\, self-paced online courses on a variety of health topics. \nLaunch event details\nDate and time: Thursday 9 March 2023\, 13:00-14:00 CET \nFor more information \nAgenda:  \nWelcome: Stephen Mac Feely\, Director\, Department of Data and Analytics\, WHO \nAbout the eLearning course: Ahmad Reza Hosseinpoor\, Lead\, Health Inequality Monitoring\, Department of Data and Analytics\, WHO \nLearner endorsements \nOpen session for questions: Moderated by Devaki Nambiar\, Health Inequality Monitoring\, Department of Data and Analytics\, WHO \nClosing remarks: Anshu Banerjee\, Director\, Department of Maternal\, Newborn\, Child\, and Adolescent Health and Ageing\, WHO and Pascale Allotey\, Director\, Department of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Research\, WHO \nClick here to register!
