SUMMARY:Lucky Iron Fish Lunch & Learn with CanWaCH
DESCRIPTION:Lucky Iron Fish is hosting a digital lunch and learn session to showcase their latest data and research on the use of the Lucky Iron Fish to address iron deficiency anemia. Lucky Iron Fish offers a novel tool for iron deficiency anemia and provides in-depth training and resources for program implementation. Over the past 4 years\, Lucky Iron Fish has partnered with organizations including CARE\, Action Against Hunger\, World Vision and Catholic Relief Services and has worked with partners to deliver programs in Benin\, Tanzania\, Senegal\, Guatemala\, Peru and India. Most recently\, Lucky Iron Fish has conducted and completed several trials and pilots and received funding from Canadian Fund for Local Initiatives (India) and The Fund for Innovation and Transformation (with CARE in Benin). Please join us for an interactive 1 hour session\, space will be provided for questions and discussion.\n\nAbout the company: Lucky Iron Fish is a Canadian social enterprise and B-Corp dedicated to preventing and addressing iron deficiency around the globe. The economic impact of iron deficiency is clear\, contributing to a over $70B annual global GDP loss\, and an estimated 20% decrease in women’s earning potential. Impacting mostly women and children\, iron deficiency causes nausea\, fatigue\, fainting\, headaches\, and hair loss. Iron deficiency also restricts cognitive and physical development in children. To address this massive global challenge\, Lucky Iron Fish created the Lucky Iron Fish (and Leaf). The Fish/Leaf is a culturally sensitive\, scientifically proven innovation to fortify meals with natural iron and reduce the prevalence of iron deficiency anemia. Clinical work on the Fish has been published by independent academic institutions to demonstrate its safety\, efficacy\, and impact. Preparing meals or boiling water with the Fish/Leaf and a few drops of citrus/acid for 10 minutes releases a consistent amount (6-8mg) of iron that fortifies the meal. Feedback and other assessments indicate that the iron does not affect the taste or color of the food and no side-effects have been reported. The Fish/Leaf are designed to appeal to the end-user to improve compliance. As a result\, compliance levels have been shown to be high (>85%) in many places. Cooking with the Lucky Iron Fish/Leaf is safe and effective and can be used by a family of up to five people for five years. Therefore\, not only are the Fish/Leaf simple to use\, but they are affordable and sustainable. Lucky Iron Fish offers discounted pricing to NGOs\, Charities\, Foundations\, and Corporate CSR programs in order to make the Fish/Leaf accessible to communities around the world.\n\nRegister here!

SUMMARY:13th International Conference on the Maternal Child Health Handbook
DESCRIPTION:The 13th International Conference on the Maternal & Child Health (MCH) Handbook promotes health equity and aims to bring the health of mothers and their children to the forefront as\, too often\, social barriers make mothers feel invisible. MCH Handbook is a home-based health record and information tool which supports women throughout their pregnancy\, delivery\, and the postnatal period\, along with the first few years of their children’s lives. Aside from being a source of information\, the MCH Handbook strives to empower parents by strengthening communication between them and health professionals and encouraging them to be actively involved in decision-making and management of their family’s health. \nDuring the COVID-19 pandemic\, global maternal and fetal outcomes worsened\, with rises in maternal deaths\, stillbirths\, and maternal depression. Overall\, the pandemic has highlighted an urgent need to prioritize accessible and equitable maternal care. \nThe primary objectives of this conference are to: \n\nAdvocate for social cohesion through equitable holistic maternal and child care around the globe\nPromote the implementation of the MCH Handbook as a global standard tool\nSupport the needs of underprivileged families\, including refugees\, migrants\, and ethnic minorities\n\nOverall\, this conference is an opportunity to reflect on the impact of COVID-19 on the implementation and use of the MCH Handbook and identify future trajectories and strategies to ensure the program’s success. We gladly invite healthcare professionals\, researchers\, policymakers\, students\, and anyone passionate about improving maternal and child care\, to attend\, share experience and learn more about how we are striving to make mothers visible. \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Choice\, Voice and Autonomy: Women’s political leadership for health in a fragile world
DESCRIPTION:Women’s political leadership is critical for achieving the SDGs\, including improving gender equity and SRHR in UHC outcomes. \n\n\nJoin us for a virtual discussion tackling these issues on the sidelines of the UN High-level Political Forum. \n\n\nThere is no other way to put it: Trends in new policies on healthcare for women and adolescent girls are regressive. This already underfunded area is being further deprioritized in the budgets of donors and governments.  At a time when compounding\, ongoing crises are deeply affecting the progress made toward women’s empowerment and the health of communities\, another\, quieter war is waging against fundamental rights around the world. Women and girls are being cut off from education\, work and access to essential primary health care services. \n\n\nThese reversals are happening just as the world saw the number of girls in school increasing\, and the number of child marriages and deaths decreasing across the board. Response to the global pandemic brought into focus how fragile these gains were\, and how women are positioned at the frontlines of the home and their communities. And yet\, women are too often left out of the decision making and absent from leadership roles. \n\n\nEvent speakers will reflect on how women leaders make a difference on social progress via gender equity in the context of health and education\, answering the questions of: \n\n\n\nWhy does women’s political leadership matter?\nHow can we encourage and support women’s political leadership?\nHow do strategic partnerships for health and gender benefit from women’s political leadership?\nWhat role can men play in relation to supporting women’s political leadership?\nHow far have we come since the 2021 High Level Political Forum?\n\n\n\nThe event is hosted by Estonia and co-organized by PMNCH\, International Health Partnership for UHC2030 (UHC2030)\, Women in Global Health and Global Health 50/50. \n\nThe event will be hosted in English with French\, Spanish and International Sign Language (ISL) simultaneous interpretation. \nEl evento se llevará a cabo en inglés con traducción simultánea al español y lengua de señas (ISL). \nL’événement sera présenté en anglais avec traduction simultanée en Français et langue des signes internationale \n\n  \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Nature-Based Solutions\, Climate Resilience\, and the SDGs
DESCRIPTION:From mangrove forests in coastal villages to green roofs on city skyscrapers\, nature-based solutions are one of the most powerful – and most underutilized – approaches to mitigate and adapt to climate change. By protecting\, restoring\, and sustainably managing ecosystems\, nature-based solutions offer the potential to reduce climate related risks and address the biodiversity crisis\, while delivering social and economic benefits to those living within these ecosystems. \nOn June 23\, Aga Khan Foundation Canada is pleased to host Nature-based Solutions\, Climate Resilience\, and the SDGs\, welcoming a panel of experienced practitioners who aim to reduce climate risks\, advance climate resilience\, and support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Panelists will discuss the imperative of using nature-based solutions to address climate change and biodiversity loss and share examples of ongoing initiatives and available resources that organizations can draw on to strengthen their own work in this area. \nIn addition to the panel discussion\, participants will be invited to participate in breakout groups led by the speakers. These breakout groups will provide the opportunity to discuss the policy considerations\, opportunities\, and challenges of using nature-based solutions in development projects aimed at mitigating and adapting to climate change. \nKey Information for Attendees \n\nWhen you register\, please indicate your interest to attend in-person at the Delegation of the Ismaili Imamat or to attend online (Zoom) by selecting the relevant ticket option.\nPlease note that a proof of vaccination will be required to join in person.\nIn-person attendees are welcome to arrive by 8:40am\, to network and enjoy light refreshments.\n\nEvent Format/Breakout Sessions \nThe event will include breakout sessions with each panelist focusing on implementation and/or policy. \n\nIn person participants will be welcome to join a breakout session with Patricia Fuller or Jimena Eyzaguirre.\nOnline participants will be welcome to join a breakout session with Didier Van Bignoot or Benjamin Simmons.\nPlease specify your preference for breakout sessions as you fill out the registration form.
