A cultural competency training workshop open to all members will be held later in the afternoon. Pre-voting will be available and details will be sent to the member voting rep on file.  \n\nKeynote Speaker: Dr. Herminia Palacio\n \nWe are thrilled to announce Dr. Herminia Palacio as the keynote speaker of our Annual General Meeting! Dr. Herminia Palacio is the President and CEO of the Guttmacher Institute. She leads the organization in fulfilling its mission to advance sexual and reproductive health and rights in the United States and globally. Dr. Palacio has dedicated her career to advancing health equity; she enjoys more than 25 years of experience across a broad range of sectors\, including academic and clinical medicine\, governmental public health and philanthropy. \nPrior to joining the Guttmacher Institute\, Dr. Palacio served as Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services for the City of New York. She also practiced clinical medicine for nearly 20 years\, including almost 15 years at San Francisco General Hospital during the height of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. She has held a number of full-time or adjunct academic appointments\, including at the University of Texas School of Public Health\, Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and the University of California\, San Francisco\, School of Medicine. Dr. Palacio currently serves as a member on the CUNY Board of Trustees and the RPA Board of Directors. \nAdditionally\, she is serving as a member of the Commonwealth Fund Commission on a National Public Health System. Dr. Palacio received her medical degree from Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York\, a master of public health from the University of California\, Berkeley\, School of Public Health and a BA in biology from Barnard College at Columbia University. DESCRIPTION:Since the first ICFP in Kampala\, Uganda in 2009\, the International Conference on Family Planning (ICFP) has served as a strategic inflection point for the global reproductive health community\, providing a global stage for countries\, organizations\, and individuals to make important commitments and celebrate achievements as the world’s largest scientific conference on family planning and reproductive health. \nICFP has become much more than a conference – it has grown into a platform for researchers\, advocates\, governments and communities; a movement towards achieving access to family planning for all; and a growing community guided by the spirit of partnership\, inclusivity\, innovation and scientific rigor. \nAs the larger family planning community looks “beyond 2020” to realign our goals and reposition for the future of family planning\, ICFP 2022 will be a strategic benchmark as the community prepares to recommit to a goal of universal access by 2030. \n\nRegister here

SUMMARY:Women\, Life\, Freedom: Global Implications of the Women-Led Uprising in Iran
DESCRIPTION:The women’s uprising in Iran has captivated the world. The death of Mahsa Amini in government custody in September sparked protests all over Iran. What started out as a spontaneous women’s resistance has grown and evolved into a sustained cross-sectoral movement calling not only for reform of repressive policies in relation to women\, but for structural changes in society. \nJoin us for an event addressing the situation in Iran and its global implications. We will have a panel discussion consisting of Iranian women who will offer an analysis of the uprising in Iran\, followed by another panel of women active in the women’s movements across different regions who will discuss the global implications of this women-led uprising. The event will showcase how feminists from around the world are working together to build global solidarity in their advocacy for structural change. A dedicated conversation will be held with UN Women senior leadership as part of the event to discuss and present key feminist asks from the NGO CSWs in the Regions and other global women’s movements. Finally\, we will discuss concrete steps for building global solidarity for feminist advocacy purposes. \nThis event is presented by the NGO CSWs in the Regions and sponsored by The New York Women’s Foundation and Iranian American Women’s Foundation\, in partnership with UN Women. \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Women and Water: On the frontline of climate change
DESCRIPTION:Climate change impacts us all – with the immediate effects most often felt through water insecurity. So why\, we ask\, is only 3% of climate finance dedicated to water-related adaptation? As 2030 fast approaches\, the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) targets on water and sanitation are still distant hopes\, and water insecurity is growing as the climate crisis becomes a reality for billions of people. As stewards of water\, women and girls confront the impacts of climate change every day yet lack decision making power to influence climate finance commitments to water security. These impacts are deepening the devastating impact of widespread gender inequality in our changing climate. We ask our policy makers and leaders to prioritise investment in gender transformative water security at COP27 and to commit to the clear actions defined in this webinar. \nThe webinar will include statements and presentations to demonstrate water security evidence\, WASH as a pathway for gender equality\, and the essential element of gender responsive climate finance that includes investment in water\, sanitation\, and hygiene. Breakout groups will discuss 5 calls to action as we finalize a Joint Statement for endorsement in lead up to COP27. Please join the dialogue! DESCRIPTION:A capacity-building session and community of practice event  \n  \n\nAbout this event\n\n\n\n\nNature-based climate solutions (NBCS) that conserve\, restore\, and sustainably use biodiversity and ecosystems hold promise in helping people adapt to the impacts of climate change. \nAga Khan Foundation Canada (AKFC) and the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) are hosting an NBCS capacity-building session which will be followed by a community of practice meeting focusing on NBCS and biodiversity led by Global Affairs Canada (GAC). \nSession 1: Implementing Gender-Responsive Nature-Based Climate Solutions for Adaptation \nOn October 7\, join AKFC and IISD for a capacity-building session on advancing gender equality through rights-based\, inclusive approaches to NBCS for climate change adaptation. DESCRIPTION:In recent months\, we’ve heard our members share the complexities and challenges of engaging communities and harnessing the power of social media to amplify their social impact. \nThe Equal Futures Network​\, a CanWaCH​ initiative\, has been working with the team and community at the On Canada Project​ to design a resource that helps leaders\, communications practitioners\, and social media managers level up their digital communications and public engagement strategies. We are excited to introduce Designing Digital Dialogue: Communications for Systems Change​! \nTo support your learning journey\, join us on September 20 at 2 p.m. EDT for an interactive 90 minute webinar led by Gina Uppal and Sam Krishnapillai from the On Canada Project. This webinar will highlight the goals of the toolkit\, and participants will receive a detailed walkthrough of the materials\, a personalized learning plan\, and opportunity to connect with other community members undergoing this work. \nDidn’t receive your code? SUMMARY:Lucky Iron Fish Lunch & Learn with CanWaCH
DESCRIPTION:Lucky Iron Fish is hosting a digital lunch and learn session to showcase their latest data and research on the use of the Lucky Iron Fish to address iron deficiency anemia. Lucky Iron Fish offers a novel tool for iron deficiency anemia and provides in-depth training and resources for program implementation. Over the past 4 years\, Lucky Iron Fish has partnered with organizations including CARE\, Action Against Hunger\, World Vision and Catholic Relief Services and has worked with partners to deliver programs in Benin\, Tanzania\, Senegal\, Guatemala\, Peru and India. Most recently\, Lucky Iron Fish has conducted and completed several trials and pilots and received funding from Canadian Fund for Local Initiatives (India) and The Fund for Innovation and Transformation (with CARE in Benin). Please join us for an interactive 1 hour session\, space will be provided for questions and discussion.\n\nAbout the company: Lucky Iron Fish is a Canadian social enterprise and B-Corp dedicated to preventing and addressing iron deficiency around the globe. The economic impact of iron deficiency is clear\, contributing to a over $70B annual global GDP loss\, and an estimated 20% decrease in women’s earning potential. Impacting mostly women and children\, iron deficiency causes nausea\, fatigue\, fainting\, headaches\, and hair loss. Iron deficiency also restricts cognitive and physical development in children. To address this massive global challenge\, Lucky Iron Fish created the Lucky Iron Fish (and Leaf). The Fish/Leaf is a culturally sensitive\, scientifically proven innovation to fortify meals with natural iron and reduce the prevalence of iron deficiency anemia. Clinical work on the Fish has been published by independent academic institutions to demonstrate its safety\, efficacy\, and impact. Preparing meals or boiling water with the Fish/Leaf and a few drops of citrus/acid for 10 minutes releases a consistent amount (6-8mg) of iron that fortifies the meal. Feedback and other assessments indicate that the iron does not affect the taste or color of the food and no side-effects have been reported. The Fish/Leaf are designed to appeal to the end-user to improve compliance. As a result\, compliance levels have been shown to be high (>85%) in many places. Cooking with the Lucky Iron Fish/Leaf is safe and effective and can be used by a family of up to five people for five years. Therefore\, not only are the Fish/Leaf simple to use\, but they are affordable and sustainable.
