SUMMARY:Gender-Based Violence Risk Mitigation in Humanitarian and Development Programs
DESCRIPTION:Action Against Hunger is committed to integrating a gender-transformative approach into all of our programming\, and to reducing gender inequality and mitigating gender-based violence at all levels. This training supports our fundamental goal to advance gender equality and will equip participants to meet key priorities of the International Strategic Plan 2021-2025. \nThis GBV Risk Mitigation training\, facilitated by Action Against Hunger’s International Gender Unit\, is designed for programming professionals who would like to learn more about GBV core concepts and how to mainstream GBV risk mitigation measures across the program cycle. The three-day training will be offered in four sessions available in English\, French\, and Spanish. \nThe training includes three hours of live facilitated sessions per day as well as pre- and post-training activities. SUMMARY:Building an International Career in Foreign Policy
DESCRIPTION:The foreign policy field presents unique opportunities to build a truly international career spanning geographies and cultures. However\, the process of building an international career can seem convoluted and daunting and comes with a unique set of challenges. As part of this discussion we will be covering topics including the value of working abroad as part of a foreign policy career\, how to stand out as an international candidate\, and panelists’ experiences on navigating visa and immigration issues. \nJoin us for a virtual discussion with panelists who have built international careers in a variety of foreign policy fields\, and find out more about the benefits as well as challenges of being a global professional in today’s world. The panel discussion will be followed by a brief Q&A session. \nEvent format\nA private link to a group call will be circulated to all participants one day before the event. The informal panel discussion will follow an interactive Q&A format\, to facilitate organic conversations between participants and panelists. \nWe welcome all women and non-binary people to our events\, particularly from underrepresented backgrounds. We are committed to building an environment that respects and values the diversity of our community. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special presentation to commemorate ADRA’s work in Lebanon.\nOn July 31\, at 5:00 PM EDT we will be talking with our colleagues from the ADRA Lebanon office to discuss ADRA’s work in Lebanon following the Beirut explosion of August 4\, 2020. We will be looking at the disaster\, ADRA’s response\, and the continuing recovery a year later. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe explosion in the port of Beirut\, Lebanon\, left an estimated 300\,000 people were left homeless. ADRA provided immediate humanitarian response followed by support in the months after. \nTune in on July 31 at 5:00 PM EDT to learn about how ADRA has helped Beirut rebuild following the devastating explosion.

She was also the first woman and youngest Deputy Grand Chief for Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) as well as the first female and youngest Grand Chief for Mushkegowuk Council. She served a second term as Chief of TTN\, and a second term as NAN Deputy Grand Chief. For nine years\, she ran a successful consulting business providing advice and guidance to First Nations leaders\, and organizations\, specializing in negotiations and facilitation. She returned to elected leadership in 2018 becoming the first woman Ontario Regional Chief leading the Chiefs of Ontario. \nEducation is a priority and essential to self-determination. RoseAnne holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree and was the first member of her community to complete a Master’s Degree (Humanities). She was awarded the prestigious “Canada 125 medal” for having “made a significant contribution to Canada” through her leadership.  \nPositive and lasting change requires creative and innovative thinking and ways of being. RoseAnne balances her political life with creativity and art practice. She is a multi-disciplinary artist whose work focuses on political art\, landscape and portrait photography\, music as well as documentary short films that reflect a personal passion for social justice\, political engagement and community building.  \nRoseAnne has dedicated her adult life to serving and striving to create a better quality of life and future for First Nations people. She represents a generational change\, bringing diplomacy and encouraging unity in the First Nations political system\, while breaking down barriers since the start of her political career.  \nOntario Regional Chief (ORC)\, RoseAnne worked tirelessly and collaboratively with the Ontario Leadership Council over her three-year term. She made positive changes during her term including a strong and effective pandemic response that focused on saving lives and preserving the health and well-being of First Nation citizens; improved relationships with the federal and provincial governments; and established a Council of Elected Women Chiefs and the creation of an Economic Growth and Prosperity Table.  \nShe was elected to Assembly of First Nations (AFN) National Chief in July 2021. \nThe Honourable Maryam Monsef\, Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Rural Economic Development\nThe Honourable Maryam Monsef is Canada’s Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Rural Economic Development\, and the Member of Parliament for Peterborough—Kawartha. She is the first woman to be elected in the federal riding of Peterborough—Kawartha\, the first Afghan-Canadian Member of Parliament in Canada’s history\, and the first Muslim to serve as a federal Cabinet Minister. \nAs Minister for Women and Gender Equality\, she has been a part of a transformative period for gender equality in Canada. She led Status of Women Canada’s transition from an agency to the new Department for Women and Gender Equality\, and has secured precedent-setting investments in Canada’s equality-seeking movement\, including over $200 million to support Canada’s first-ever federal strategy to prevent and address gender-based violence. Minister Monsef was also instrumental in launching a historic fund of $100 million specifically to support the sustainability of the women’s movement by investing in capacity-building for women’s organizations across Canada. \nRecognized by Apolitical as one of the Top 20 Most Influential People in Gender Policy for two consecutive years\, Minister Monsef has helped to shape the conversation about gender equality on the national and global stage.  \nMinister Monsef is equally committed to bringing the voice of rural Canada to the Cabinet table\, where she is working on important rural economic development priorities including expanding access to broadband connectivity.  \nShe has always been committed to giving back to her community and her country. In her home community of Peterborough\, Ontario\, she co-founded the Red Pashmina Campaign\, which raised money to support education for women and girls in Afghanistan. She is an alumna of Trent University\, and speaks English\, Farsi and Dari. \nSusan Aglukark\, O.C.\, LL.B\nAward-Winning Inuk Singer-Songwriter\nAward-winning Inuk singer-songwriter Susan Aglukark is one of Canada’s most unique artists\, who blends the Inuktitut and English languages with contemporary pop music arrangements to tell the stories of her people\, the Inuit of Arctic Canada. Aglukark’s talks emphasize the same themes that her music does – those of hope\, spirit\, and encouragement that have captivated and inspired listeners around the world. \nAglukark has performed for Queen Elizabeth II\, Nelson Mandela\, Canadian Prime Ministers Jean Chrétien and Brian Mulroney\, French President Jacques Chirac\, as well as several other dignitaries. Equally important to her are the people she has performed for and spoken to on reserves\, in small towns and in villages across Canada and the Arctic. \nShe was awarded the Governor Generals Order of Canada in 2005\, and received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal February 2012. She also holds honorary degrees in Law from the University of Alberta and the Calgary University\, and an honorary doctorate of Fine Arts from the Lethbridge University\, she is also the Chair and Founder of the Arctic Rose Foundation. Following a five-year postdoctoral fellowship in Population and Public Health at UBC and a CIHR fellowship in primary health care research\, she joined the Birth Place Lab as Senior Research Associate. She has worked with transdisciplinary teams to develop several innovative\, patient-centred instruments. She led the psychometric testing of a scale that assesses stress associated with remittances obligations of Sudanese refugees; a measure of childbirth fear that has been used in 10+ countries; and 3 scales to measure autonomy\, respect\, and mistreatment in perinatal care. \n\n\nDr. Paulomi Niles is a Research Scientist at New York University\, Clinician Scholar at the Birth Place Lab\, and Certified-Nurse-Midwife in a large public health care network in New York City that primarily serves BIPOC and immigrant communities. Her work explores the potential of integrated models of midwifery care in creating health equity. SUMMARY:Beyond COVID-19: The Future of Digital Health in Africa
DESCRIPTION:Event Overview\nDigital technologies are being harnessed to support the public-health initiatives including the COVID-19\nresponse worldwide through population surveillance\, case identification\, contact tracing and evaluation on\nthe basis of mobility data and communication with the public. These rapid responses leverage billions of\nmobile phones\, large online datasets\, connected devices\, relatively low-cost computing resources and\nadvances in machine learning and natural language processing. \nAll United Nations member states have agreed to try to achieve universal health coverage by 2030. As such\,\nAfrican leaders have been taking bold steps to improve healthcare systems in the process and at low cost\nand acknowledge the potential of digital health. However\, with the Covid-19 pandemic that has weakened\nthe health care system worldwide and exacerbated the already fragile situation in Africa\, more needs to be\ndone not only to address the existing challenges\, but also to maintain the momentum during and beyond the\npandemic. \nAfrica’s healthcare systems have been under pressure to fight the Covid-19 pandemic as well as the ongoing\nthreats of other diseases such as malaria\, Ebola and HIV/AIDS. The future of public health is likely to become\nincreasingly digital\, but as far as the implementation of digital innovations for the public-health response to\nCOVID-19 worldwide is concerned\, evidence has shown that there are some limitations\, and roadblocks at\nvarious levels: legal\, ethical and privacy\, organizational and manpower. This pressure on digitalization of the\nhealth system should be seen as an opportunity – not only for the governments to facilitate the processes\nbut also for innovators\, donors and local organisations to partner and provide essential healthcare services\nthat are affordable\, reliable and tailored to local needs. \nOn that note\, African Sustainable Development Advisors\, Inc [Afrisda\, Inc.] and partners will organize a\n2-hour 15 minutes virtual event (Webinar/Zoom) on Tuesday June 29th at 1:00 pm Eastern time/ 5:00 pm\nGMT/ 8 pm EAT. DESCRIPTION:Adolescent health is an important concern in sub-Saharan Africa\, because of the relatively young population distribution and high levels of HIV\, adolescent births and other reproductive health challenges. But are the risks distributed equally among girls and boys\, rural and urban adolescents and adolescents from the poorest and richest households? \nThis webinar will highlight key findings from new research by the Countdown to 2030 for Women’s\, Children’s and Adolescents’ Health and the African Population and Health Research Centre (APHRC) showing both areas of progress and remaining challenges. DESCRIPTION:Please join Nutrition International’s Nutrition Technical Assistance Mechanism (NTEAM) for a webinar on how technical assistance provided through the Technical Assistance for Nutrition (TAN) project supported the mobilization of Local Governance Units (LGUs) in the Philippines to improve nutrition outcomes. \nNutrition International has been providing technical assistance to the Philippines for the development and implementation of the Philippines Plan of Action for Nutrition since 2016. The technical assistance provided in 2018-21 focused on strengthening the nutrition actions of LGUs: regions\, provinces\, cities and municipalities. Nutrition International support included the development of a Regional Plan of Action for Nutrition in all 17 regions\, and the development of a LGU mobilization strategy that includes tools and processes to:\n• Improve planning and management of local nutrition action plans\,\n• Secure support from the national policy and budget\, and\n• Mobilize partner agencies. \nThis webinar draws on 5 years of collaboration between the Government of the Philippines and Nutrition International. SUMMARY:Making the links in Canada and Africa: evidence-informed policies and practices to improve maternal and child health
DESCRIPTION:On June 3rd\, join CanWaCH and IMCHA to explore how the concept of “Evidence to action” was implemented by IMCHA to improve maternal and child health in sub-Saharan Africa. Speakers include researchers\, knowledge brokers and knowledge users. \nToday’s world is confronted with an unprecedented need for sound research evidence to inform policies and programs. What can we learn from past experiences? This event will focus on the use of evidence for decision-making to improve maternal and child health. A panel with a researcher\, a decision-maker\, a knowledge broker\, and a representative of a non-governmental organization will discuss their experiences in partnering to ensure data users are equipped with relevant evidence to tackle pressing local health systems challenges. \nThe model to bridge the evidence to action gap from the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa (IMCHA) initiative will be explored and lessons from implementation research projects to improve maternal and child health outcomes will be drawn. \nOur Speakers:\nChristina Zarowsky is Full Professor (and from January 2014 to December 2020 was Director)\, Department of Social and Preventive Medicine at the School of Public Health\, Université de Montréal; researcher in Global Health at the Centre de recherche en santé publique de l’Université de Montréal et du CIUSS du Centre-sud de Montréal (CReSP)\, and Extraordinary Professor at the School of Public Health of the University of the Western Cape\, South Africa.   \nMr. Patrick Mugirwa is an Economist by training\, with special interest in reproductive health\, family planning\, population and development.  He is currently the Programme Manager for Partners in Population and Development Africa Regional Office.  Patrick Mugirwa has over 15 years of experience in designing\, implementing\, monitoring and evaluating advocacy programmes in the areas of reproductive health\, family planning\, HIV/AIDS\, population and development. \nDr. Queen Dube is a passionate consultant Pediatrician and clinical epidemiologist. She is the Chief of Health Services for Malawi’s Ministry of Health. Dr Dube also served as the Head of Paediatrics and Child Health at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital\, one of the largest tertiary hospital in Malawi. Dr. Dube has worked with the Ministry of Health\, Saving Newborn Lives\, USAID\, WHO\, IDRC\, Pediatrics and Child Health association of Malawi and UNICEF to improve the quality of newborn care in district hospitals and to improve the quality of care for the small and sick newborn in Malawi. \nDr. Jenn Brenner\, MD\, FRCPC\, is a pediatrician and Clinical Associate Professor in the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary. Over the past two decades\, she has engaged in many maternal\, newborn and child health implementation\, research and policy initiatives through collaborative university partnerships including in East Africa\, within the Healthy Child Uganda and Mama na Mtoto (Tanzania) partnerships.   \nThe event will be offered in English and French. \nTo register click here!
