SUMMARY:Feminist Approaches to 'Localization'
DESCRIPTION:Oxfam Canada is on a journey to apply a feminist approach to all its work – both in terms of outcomes and ways of working. Applying feminist principles requires us to rethink current ways of working in the international aid sector. This session will unpack how ‘localization’ is part and parcel of an intersectional feminist approach. Drawing on its interviews with local women’s rights actors working across the humanitarian-development-peace nexus\, and on its experience supporting the leadership of local women’s rights organizations in its international programming\, Oxfam will share reflections and lessons learned on this crucial topic.

SUMMARY:International Day of Women and Girls in Science
DESCRIPTION:Science and gender equality are both vital for the achievement of the internationally agreed development goals\, including the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Over the past 15 years\, the global community has made a lot of effort in inspiring and engaging women and girls in science. Yet women and girls continue to be excluded from participating fully in science. \nAt present\, less than 30 per cent of researchers worldwide are women. According to UNESCO data (2014 – 2016)\, only around 30 per cent of all female students select STEM-related fields in higher education. Globally\, female students’ enrolment is particularly low in ICT (3 per cent)\, natural science\, mathematics and statistics (5 per cent) and in engineering\, manufacturing and construction (8 per cent). \nLong-standing biases and gender stereotypes are steering girls and women away from science related fields. As in the real world\, the world on screen reflects similar biases—the 2015 Gender Bias Without Borders study by the Geena Davis Institute showed that of the onscreen characters with an identifiable STEM job\, only 12 per cent were women. \nIn order to achieve full and equal access to and participation in science for women and girls\, and further achieve gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls\, the United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/70/212 declaring 11 February as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.

SUMMARY:International Migrants Day
DESCRIPTION:Throughout human history\, migration has been a courageous expression of the individual’s will to overcome adversity and to live a better life. Today\, globalization\, together with advances in communications and transportation\, has greatly increased the number of people\, who have the desire and the capacity to move to other places. \nThis new era has created challenges and opportunities for societies throughout the world. It also has served to underscore the clear linkage between migration and development\, as well as the opportunities it provides for co-development\, that is\, the concerted improvement of economic and social conditions at both origin and destination. \nMigration draws increasing attention in the world nowadays. Mixed with elements of unforeseeability\, emergency\, and complexity\, the challenges and difficulties of international migration require enhanced cooperation and collective action among countries and regions. The United Nations is actively playing a catalyst role in this area\, with the aim of creating more dialogues and interactions within countries and regions\, as well as propelling experience exchange and collaboration opportunities.

SUMMARY:SLF Pride Talks: Safety at Home for LGBTIQ Communities in sub-Saharan Africa
DESCRIPTION:In Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Kenya\, as well as in many countries around the world\, LGBTIQ people face discrimination and violence from their governments\, communities\, and families. While some LGBTIQ activists must flee for their safety\, most continue to live and work in their home countries and communities. \nJoin us on December 9\,at 11 a.m. EST in honour of Human Rights Day for our third installment of the SLF Pride Talks. You will have the opportunity to hear first-hand from the leaders of two vital community-based organizations in DRC and Kenya that are working to create safety at home for LGBTIQ individuals. \nThe event will also feature a short video that will highlight how: \n– Bridge Initiative Organization in Tanzania reunites families by leading peer-to-peer conversations between parents of LGBTIQ community members \n– Tamba Pwani in Kenya creates affirming and inclusive health care by training health care workers \n– Rainbow Sunrise Mapambazuko’s friendship centre in Democratic Republic of the Congo gives LGBTIQ individuals a place to gather and connect without needing to hide who they are \nand more! \nPartners in Pride \nThe Stephen Lewis Foundation Partners in Pride campaign is a global solidarity movement that mobilizes funds for grassroots LGBTIQ organizations in five central and east African countries. \nThese organizations build hope and solidarity among LGBTIQ individuals while providing health care\, legal services\, counselling\, and support. They champion human rights; ensure access to inclusive HIV services; and fight for a safer\, freer\, and more equal future for LGBTIQ communities\, often in the face of violent homophobia\, legally entrenched discrimination\, and political and social persecution. \nFor more information about Partners in Pride\, please contact: \nslfpride@stephenlewisfoundation.org \nwww.stephenlewisfoundation.org/partners-in-pride

SUMMARY:Sexual and Reproductive Justice now! A call to action two years on from the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) + 25 Nairobi Summit
DESCRIPTION:In 2019\, over 8\,300 people from 172 countries gathered at the Nairobi Summit to celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the landmark Programme of Action adopted at the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in Cairo. Over 1\,300 commitments were made by Governments\, civil society and the private sector that were accompanied by 12 global commitments to achieve ICPD goals. The independent High-Level Commission of the Nairobi Summit  (HLC)\, was tasked with submitting periodic reports to the United Nations Population Fund\, UNFPA.  Two years later\, no region is on track for achieving its commitments.   \n SheDecides 25×25 youth leaders will be discussing the first HLC report No Exceptions\, No Exclusions with high-level commissioners at two years of the Nairobi Summit. Speakers will also analyse key international examples of what is holding SRHR back and how we can move SRHR forward. This is a crucial moment for sexual and reproductive health and rights worldwide. \nWe would love you to be part of this conversation to take urgent action together.

SUMMARY:Towards a More Equal Future – The Role of Gender Equality in Ending Malnutrition by 2030
DESCRIPTION:COVID-19 has exposed gaps in nutrition efforts that have always required a shift in gendered power dynamics and decision-making. Put simply\, good nutrition cultivates gender equality\, and gender equality cultivates good nutrition. We must make gender equality the central catalyst\, to sustainably improve nutrition and access to affordable healthy diets for all. \nJoin host Femi Oke\, World Vision\, as well as partners Standing Together for Nutrition\, Scaling Up Nutrition\, Save the Children\, CARE\, and Nutrition International as we look at how gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls are central parts of building back better. The event will reflect on the key gender wins from the UN Food System Summit and spotlight Member States who have risen to the challenge of prioritizing gender equality within their commitments and action plans.

SUMMARY:Canadian Conference on Global Health: Rethinking partnership paradigms in global health
DESCRIPTION:The 27th annual Canadian Conference for Global Health calls for a shift in partnership paradigms in global health in order to achieve the complex and integrated social\, health and environmental goals set out in the SDGs. \nWhile there are many paradigms for partnership\, CCGH 2021 will provide a platform to highlight different partnership models at local\, national and international levels and understand how they contribute to equitable and sustainable outcomes. Specifically\, how have partnerships demonstrated tangible improvements to health and how they have facilitated the spread of social\, health and environmental improvements? How do partnerships impact the lives of those that work within them and how do they benefit other organizations or communities outside of the partnership? \nRegistration is available in two formats: \nIn-Person\nThe CCGH will accept a limited number of people in person at the Delta Hotel in Ottawa. The number of in-person attendees will depend on public health guidelines. At this time we will accept 85 registrations and any further will be waitlisted. Note that due to the limited number of spaces we will only be offering full registration for in-person delegates. \nCOVID-19 Note: In-person attendees will be asked at check-in to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination OR provide proof of a negative COVID-19 antigen test taken within 48 hours. \nVirtual\nThe CCGH will offer virtual registration for the hybrid program to an unlimited number of people. \nScholarships\nScholarships are offered that are intended to encourage the participation of people with lived experience and support representation from disadvantaged and under-represented communities\, as well as people working in Community-Based Organizations whose work is focused on supporting these communities – see if you qualify! All content of the CCGH will be archived for registered delegates for 3 months post-event. \nStudent and Young Professional Scholarships\nThe Canadian Association for Global Health (CCGH) is pleased to offer a limited number of scholarships to attend this year’s CCGH virtually.
