SUMMARY:International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation
DESCRIPTION:Female genital mutilation (FGM) comprises all procedures that involve altering or injuring the female genitalia for non-medical reasons and is recognized internationally as a violation of the human rights\, the health and the integrity of girls and women. \nGirls who undergo female genital mutilation face short-term complications such as severe pain\, shock\, excessive bleeding\, infections\, and difficulty in passing urine\, as well as long-term consequences for their sexual and reproductive health and mental health. \nAlthough primarily concentrated in 30 countries in Africa and the Middle East\, female genital mutilation is a universal problem and is also practiced in some countries in Asia and Latin America. Female genital mutilation continues to persist amongst immigrant populations living in Western Europe\, North America\, Australia and New Zealand. \nTo promote the elimination of female genital mutilation\, coordinated and systematic efforts are needed\, and they must engage whole communities and focus on human rights\, gender equality\, sexual education and attention to the needs of women and girls who suffer from its consequences. \n  \n\n

SUMMARY:Maintaining the Gains – People\, Projects and Partnership in the Time of COVID-19
DESCRIPTION:This session is organized and led by the Primate’s World Development and Relief Fund\n\nFor the past two years\, PWRDF\, together with its partners in Burundi\, Mozambique\, Rwanda\, and Tanzania\, and with support from Global Affairs Canada (GAC)\, has carried out two one-year projects that have responded to the COVID-19 global pandemic. Designed to maintain the gains achieved through the four-year GAC-funded\, ‘All Mothers and Children Count’ (AMCC) program\, these projects have supported vital COVID-19-related work.  In this panel PWRDF’s Planning\, Monitoring and Evaluation Coordinator\, Bart Dickinson\, together with partners from Village Health Works\, Burundi; the Diocese of Masasi\, Tanzania; and EHALE\, Mozambique\, will explore the impacts of COVID-19 through the data they have gathered and through real-life experiences on the ground. They will discuss how this has both made possible new work\, and challenged existing ways of working. And they will explore how COVID has changed the ways it has impacted how we live out our partnerships.

DESCRIPTION:The Tokyo “N4G” Summit in December 2021 brought together 45 countries and a dozen donors and partners as well as private sector\, civil society groups and academia to deliver policy and financial commitments to end malnutrition. More than US$27 billion was pledged\, along with the commitment of delivering more effective and sustainable financing actions for nutrition. To achieve nutrition targets and leave no one behind\, countries and the global community will also need to strengthen accountability for nutrition actions and results. \nTo support stakeholders in translating their commitments to concrete action\, the World Bank\, the Global Financing Facility for Women\, Children and Adolescents (GFF)\, World Health Organization (WHO)\, and Results for Development (R4D) are hosting the Nutrition Financing week: a series of virtual N4G side events from January 24-27\, 2022. \nAfter a kick-off event that will lay out emerging issues and initiatives on nutrition financing\, participants will take a deep dive into key actions and strategies that can be undertaken to strengthen nutrition financing and accountability mechanisms that can maximize results. SUMMARY:International Day of Women and Girls in Science
DESCRIPTION:Science and gender equality are both vital for the achievement of the internationally agreed development goals\, including the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Over the past 15 years\, the global community has made a lot of effort in inspiring and engaging women and girls in science. Yet women and girls continue to be excluded from participating fully in science. \nAt present\, less than 30 per cent of researchers worldwide are women. According to UNESCO data (2014 – 2016)\, only around 30 per cent of all female students select STEM-related fields in higher education. Globally\, female students’ enrolment is particularly low in ICT (3 per cent)\, natural science\, mathematics and statistics (5 per cent) and in engineering\, manufacturing and construction (8 per cent). \nLong-standing biases and gender stereotypes are steering girls and women away from science related fields. As in the real world\, the world on screen reflects similar biases—the 2015 Gender Bias Without Borders study by the Geena Davis Institute showed that of the onscreen characters with an identifiable STEM job\, only 12 per cent were women. \nIn order to achieve full and equal access to and participation in science for women and girls\, and further achieve gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls\, the United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/70/212 declaring 11 February as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.

Mixed with elements of unforeseeability\, emergency\, and complexity\, the challenges and difficulties of international migration require enhanced cooperation and collective action among countries and regions. The United Nations is actively playing a catalyst role in this area\, with the aim of creating more dialogues and interactions within countries and regions\, as well as propelling experience exchange and collaboration opportunities.

SUMMARY:Sexual and Reproductive Justice now! A call to action two years on from the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) + 25 Nairobi Summit
DESCRIPTION:In 2019\, over 8\,300 people from 172 countries gathered at the Nairobi Summit to celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the landmark Programme of Action adopted at the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in Cairo. Over 1\,300 commitments were made by Governments\, civil society and the private sector that were accompanied by 12 global commitments to achieve ICPD goals. The independent High-Level Commission of the Nairobi Summit  (HLC)\, was tasked with submitting periodic reports to the United Nations Population Fund\, UNFPA.  Two years later\, no region is on track for achieving its commitments.   \n SheDecides 25×25 youth leaders will be discussing the first HLC report No Exceptions\, No Exclusions with high-level commissioners at two years of the Nairobi Summit. Speakers will also analyse key international examples of what is holding SRHR back and how we can move SRHR forward. This is a crucial moment for sexual and reproductive health and rights worldwide. \nWe would love you to be part of this conversation to take urgent action together.

Some skills that attendees may explore include project implementation\, conducting evaluations\, community building and knowledge translation. Key learning outcomes for GHSYPS 2021 will revolve around addressing health disparities in three urgent global health topics: planetary health\, marginalized communities. Leading experts and outstanding Students and Young Professionals (SYPs) will question the upcoming global health challenges of our time and current Canadian projects in global health. Participants will be challenged to think about how to best leverage their skills\, seek out professional development opportunities\, and become agents of change in an ever diversifying and multidisciplinary global health sphere. SUMMARY:Canadian Conference on Global Health: Rethinking partnership paradigms in global health
DESCRIPTION:The 27th annual Canadian Conference for Global Health calls for a shift in partnership paradigms in global health in order to achieve the complex and integrated social\, health and environmental goals set out in the SDGs. \nWhile there are many paradigms for partnership\, CCGH 2021 will provide a platform to highlight different partnership models at local\, national and international levels and understand how they contribute to equitable and sustainable outcomes. Specifically\, how have partnerships demonstrated tangible improvements to health and how they have facilitated the spread of social\, health and environmental improvements? How do partnerships impact the lives of those that work within them and how do they benefit other organizations or communities outside of the partnership? \nRegistration is available in two formats: \nIn-Person\nThe CCGH will accept a limited number of people in person at the Delta Hotel in Ottawa. The number of in-person attendees will depend on public health guidelines. At this time we will accept 85 registrations and any further will be waitlisted. Note that due to the limited number of spaces we will only be offering full registration for in-person delegates. \nCOVID-19 Note: In-person attendees will be asked at check-in to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination OR provide proof of a negative COVID-19 antigen test taken within 48 hours. \nVirtual\nThe CCGH will offer virtual registration for the hybrid program to an unlimited number of people. \nScholarships\nScholarships are offered that are intended to encourage the participation of people with lived experience and support representation from disadvantaged and under-represented communities\, as well as people working in Community-Based Organizations whose work is focused on supporting these communities – see if you qualify!
