SUMMARY:Canada’s National Conference on The Sustainable Development Goals
DESCRIPTION:Together|Ensemble is Canada’s national conference devoted to tracking progress on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The conference represents an all-of-society approach to addressing Canada’s toughest sustainable development challenges\, bringing together the private sector\, academia\, government\, and civil society. \nThe SDGs have created an internationally recognized language and measurement framework for sustainable development but have so far failed to galvanize the action needed to eradicate poverty\, protect the planet\, and ensure prosperity for all. Together|Ensemble will advance the SDGs in Canada by showcasing work from across the country\, identifying opportunities for collective impact\, mobilizing good practices and effective research\, and building awareness of the SDGs in Canadian communities. \nProgress requires unprecedented cross-sectoral collaboration and innovation that touches all aspects of Canadian society. By working together\, we can put in place the transformations needed to achieve the ambitious agenda of the SDGs. \nSince 2017\, Together|Ensemble has been hosted three times in a series of symposia and conferences of Canada’s diverse and growing all-of-society community dedicated to achieving the SDGs. Learn more about Together|Ensemble’s history. \nVisit www.togetherensemble.ca for more information. \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:What Women Want: Improving Global Maternal Health Through Policy Advocacy
DESCRIPTION:Maternity Today is presenting a panel discussion on Improving Global Maternal Health through Policy Advocacy. Don’t miss out on this powerhouse presentation with leaders from gender equality\, women’s health\, midwifery\, and human rights organizations. The event will include guest speakers from : Canadian Partnership for Women’s and Children’s Health( CanWaCH)\, White Ribbon Alliance Global (WRA) \, Canadian Center for Women’s Empowerment (CCWE)\, International Confederation of Midwives (ICM)\, and Canadian Association of Midwives .Our theme is to promote women’s maternal health by engaging leaders in discussing policies that affect women and their well-being . The Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted the disparities in accessing health\, and among the vulnerable and marginalized\, are women who have been disproportionately affected by the pandemic. This panel will also discuss the importance of midwives as essential health care providers to women. \nRecently\, Maternity Today joined the global efforts with ICM and WRA\, to survey midwives as ambassadors for women’s health. The goal of the survey is to ask midwives about what they want and need to serve women in their care and for themselves as midwives. \nWhy empower midwives? Because this is What Women Want! \nIn 2019\, the What Women Want (WWW) Campaign was launched with the goal of addressing the needs of women and girls in the developing world. Findings were used to develop policy agendas and the implementation of reproductive and maternal health services. The top request that came from WWW was the demand for more midwives and better-supported nurses. As a result\, the What Women Want: Midwives’ Voices\, Midwives’ Demands campaign was launched to better understand the needs of midwives. \nA global survey was launched to amplify the multitudinous voices of Midwives. The information that is gathered will be categorized\, analyzed\, and reported in May 2022 on the International Day of the Midwife. The reported information will be further used to advocate for policy change so Midwives across the globe will receive all that they need to help mothers and children. \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:World Day of Social Justice
DESCRIPTION:Social justice is an underlying principle for peaceful and prosperous coexistence within and among nations. We uphold the principles of social justice when we promote gender equality\, or the rights of indigenous peoples and migrants. We advance social justice when we remove barriers that people face because of gender\, age\, race\, ethnicity\, religion\, culture or disability. \nFor the United Nations\, the pursuit of social justice for all is at the core of our global mission to promote development and human dignity. The adoption by the International Labour Organization of the Declaration on Social Justice for a Fair Globalization is just one recent example of the UN System’s commitment to social justice. The Declaration focuses on guaranteeing fair outcomes for all\, through employment\, social protection\, social dialogue\, and fundamental principles and rights at work.

SUMMARY:Free Webinar: What is CoLMEAL?
DESCRIPTION:Salanga has been partnering with Global Affairs Canada (GAC) and ADRA Canada to innovate on Community-Led Monitoring\, Evaluation\, Accountability and Learning (CoLMEAL). We have been piloting this approach in countries in Africa and Asia\, including fragile and vulnerable contexts\, by building the capacity of community change agents to develop\, implement\, monitor and evaluate their own theories of change to achieve sustainable changes in well-being. \nClick here to join Salanga and ADRA Canada for a free webinar during International Development Week on What is CoLMEAL? \nThe Context\nSustainable Development Goal (SDG) #16 calls for building participatory\, effective\, accountable institutions “at all levels”. In order to ensure the SDGs are sustainable\, the people who are most affected by their community’s development should be drivers of their change. Thus any information gathered should first be owned and used by those who are impacted the most. New ways of working are needed to support the decolonization of development\, including monitoring and evaluation. Frameworks and tools that support true participation\, grassroots innovation\, and empowerment of vulnerable communities will help to catalyze this process. \nFacilitated by:\nElaine Stavnitzky is a Program & CoLMEAL Advisor at Salanga. She is passionate about CoLMEAL and has been instrumental in the development of the CoLMEAL approach. She is an experienced leader\, having implemented a wide range of complex strategic\, programmatic and quality assurance processes to support leadership\, staff\, communities and children in international development and humanitarian aid programs since 2002. The nexus of her passion\, skills\, and value is in empowering communities to understand and monitor the change they seek to actualize. She is ever ready to apply her energy and enthusiasm to support organizations in strengthening systems that ensure people have right-sized information to trigger change making decisions. She loves experiencing with others the “a-ha” moment that tips the balance for transformation at the individual\, community and/or systems level. \nIntroductions by:\nAnalynn Bruce is the Development Program Director at ADRA Canada and has spearheaded the piloting and integration of CoLMEAL in ADRA’s GAC-funded projects in Africa and Asia. \nJakub Nemec is the founder of Salanga and passionate about supporting organizations to shift the power dynamic in MEAL and empower communities with the tools to measure success on their own terms.

SUMMARY:International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation
DESCRIPTION:Female genital mutilation (FGM) comprises all procedures that involve altering or injuring the female genitalia for non-medical reasons and is recognized internationally as a violation of the human rights\, the health and the integrity of girls and women. \nGirls who undergo female genital mutilation face short-term complications such as severe pain\, shock\, excessive bleeding\, infections\, and difficulty in passing urine\, as well as long-term consequences for their sexual and reproductive health and mental health. \nAlthough primarily concentrated in 30 countries in Africa and the Middle East\, female genital mutilation is a universal problem and is also practiced in some countries in Asia and Latin America. Female genital mutilation continues to persist amongst immigrant populations living in Western Europe\, North America\, Australia and New Zealand. \nTo promote the elimination of female genital mutilation\, coordinated and systematic efforts are needed\, and they must engage whole communities and focus on human rights\, gender equality\, sexual education and attention to the needs of women and girls who suffer from its consequences. \n  \n\n
