SUMMARY:International Day of Women and Girls in Science
DESCRIPTION:Science and gender equality are both vital for the achievement of the internationally agreed development goals\, including the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Over the past 15 years\, the global community has made a lot of effort in inspiring and engaging women and girls in science. Yet women and girls continue to be excluded from participating fully in science. \nAt present\, less than 30 per cent of researchers worldwide are women. According to UNESCO data (2014 – 2016)\, only around 30 per cent of all female students select STEM-related fields in higher education. Globally\, female students’ enrolment is particularly low in ICT (3 per cent)\, natural science\, mathematics and statistics (5 per cent) and in engineering\, manufacturing and construction (8 per cent). \nLong-standing biases and gender stereotypes are steering girls and women away from science related fields. As in the real world\, the world on screen reflects similar biases—the 2015 Gender Bias Without Borders study by the Geena Davis Institute showed that of the onscreen characters with an identifiable STEM job\, only 12 per cent were women. \nIn order to achieve full and equal access to and participation in science for women and girls\, and further achieve gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls\, the United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/70/212 declaring 11 February as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.

He is currently the President of Two Worlds Cancer Collaboration\, a non-profit Society and charitable foundation – a volunteer organization bridging the disparities in cancer control between the two worlds of the higher and lesser-resourced world. \nDr. Carlos Rodriguez-Galindo\nDr. Carlos Rodriguez-Galindo\, M.D.\, is the director of the St. Jude Global program at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and an executive vice president within the organization. He is also the chair of the Department of Global Pediatric Medicine and holds the Four Stars of Chicago Endowed Chair in International Pediatric Research. Rodriguez-Galindo led an institutional effort to become the first World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Centre for Childhood Cancer. DESCRIPTION:About the webinar \nWe are delighted to be joined by IIPHG\, Professor\, Dr. Kranti Suresh Vora. \nDr Kranti Suresh Vora is an obstetrician turned public health professional. She had her medical degrees from India\, MBBS DGO & MD from B. J. Medical College\, Ahmedabad. Dr Vora did her MPH at Johns Hopkins School of Public Health\, Baltimore\, USA and PhD from University of Maryland\, College Park\, USA.  Dr Vora received Bill and Melinda Gates Scholarship for MPH and international teaching fellowship at University of Maryland\, College Park. \nDr Vora has worked at Indian Institute of Management\, Ahmedabad and a joint project of UNFPA and Govt. of Gujarat\, before joining Indian Institute of Public Health Gandhinagar in 2012. Dr Vora has collaborated internationally with Karolinka Institutet\, University of Aberdeen\, McGIll University and University of Canberra among others. Her areas of interest includes Reproductive child health\, Health policy\, Health System strengthening\, Implementation research\, Demographic Surveillance\, Health innovations and Cancer research \nIn this webinar\, Dr. Vora will discuss her experience working with tribal populations when it comes to reproductive health.  Learning objectives from the seminar: \n\nTo understand marginalization of tribal population\nChallenges of working in tribal area for reproductive health\nSatisfaction of working in tribal areas\n\nDr. Vora will also be on hand to answer your questions throughout the webinar as well as at the end of the webinar. \nWe look forward to seeing you there. \nClick here to register!
