SUMMARY:Making the links in Canada and Africa: evidence-informed policies and practices to improve maternal and child health
DESCRIPTION:On June 3rd\, join CanWaCH and IMCHA to explore how the concept of “Evidence to action” was implemented by IMCHA to improve maternal and child health in sub-Saharan Africa. Speakers include researchers\, knowledge brokers and knowledge users. \nToday’s world is confronted with an unprecedented need for sound research evidence to inform policies and programs. What can we learn from past experiences? This event will focus on the use of evidence for decision-making to improve maternal and child health. A panel with a researcher\, a decision-maker\, a knowledge broker\, and a representative of a non-governmental organization will discuss their experiences in partnering to ensure data users are equipped with relevant evidence to tackle pressing local health systems challenges. \nThe model to bridge the evidence to action gap from the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa (IMCHA) initiative will be explored and lessons from implementation research projects to improve maternal and child health outcomes will be drawn. \nOur Speakers:\nChristina Zarowsky is Full Professor (and from January 2014 to December 2020 was Director)\, Department of Social and Preventive Medicine at the School of Public Health\, Université de Montréal; researcher in Global Health at the Centre de recherche en santé publique de l’Université de Montréal et du CIUSS du Centre-sud de Montréal (CReSP)\, and Extraordinary Professor at the School of Public Health of the University of the Western Cape\, South Africa.   \nMr. Patrick Mugirwa is an Economist by training\, with special interest in reproductive health\, family planning\, population and development.  He is currently the Programme Manager for Partners in Population and Development Africa Regional Office.  Patrick Mugirwa has over 15 years of experience in designing\, implementing\, monitoring and evaluating advocacy programmes in the areas of reproductive health\, family planning\, HIV/AIDS\, population and development. \nDr. Queen Dube is a passionate consultant Pediatrician and clinical epidemiologist. She is the Chief of Health Services for Malawi’s Ministry of Health. Dr Dube also served as the Head of Paediatrics and Child Health at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital\, one of the largest tertiary hospital in Malawi. Dr. Dube has worked with the Ministry of Health\, Saving Newborn Lives\, USAID\, WHO\, IDRC\, Pediatrics and Child Health association of Malawi and UNICEF to improve the quality of newborn care in district hospitals and to improve the quality of care for the small and sick newborn in Malawi. \nDr. Jenn Brenner\, MD\, FRCPC\, is a pediatrician and Clinical Associate Professor in the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary. Over the past two decades\, she has engaged in many maternal\, newborn and child health implementation\, research and policy initiatives through collaborative university partnerships including in East Africa\, within the Healthy Child Uganda and Mama na Mtoto (Tanzania) partnerships.   \nThe event will be offered in English and French. \nTo register click here!
