SUMMARY:Funding Health\, Advancing LGBTIQ Equality: Why the Global Fund Matters Now
DESCRIPTION:This event will include simultaneous English/French interpretation. \nJoin the HIV Legal Network and the Stephen Lewis Foundation for a vital conversation on why the Global Fund’s replenishment is crucial for LGBTIQ health and rights worldwide. \nWhat to expect: \n\nLearn how the Global Fund to Fight AIDS\, TB and Malaria supports LGBTIQ communities.\nHear directly from LGBTIQ leaders in Uganda\, Côte d’Ivoire\, and Ukraine about its impact on their work.\nDiscover how Canadian organizations and individuals can push for bold action from our government to ensure strong funding.\n\nWhy now? The Trump Administration’s cuts to global HIV and LGBTIQ funding have left countless communities without lifesaving programs. SUMMARY:Navigating GAC Funding to Support Local Organizations and Movements
DESCRIPTION:This International Development Week\, we are asking: Can Canadian and international organizations meaningfully support locally led development with GAC funding? \nJoin three Canadian international development organizations (Stephen Lewis Foundation\, Oxfam Canada\, and Inter Pares) and partner organizations (Women in Struggle for Empowerment\, Pakistan and a to-be-confirmed partner) for this thought-provoking\, strategic discussion. \nWe will focus on concrete examples of what has worked and where challenges persist. \nThis conversation will include a deeper dive into our featured organizations’ experiences with the Women’s Voice and Leadership (WVL) program\, the Act Together for Inclusion Fund (ACTIF)\, and Peace and Stabilization Operations Program (PSOPS). We invite audience members to broaden the conversation with examples from other GAC portfolios and initiatives. \nSpeakers: \n\nBushra Khaliq\, Executive Director\, Women in Struggle for Empowerment (WISE)\, Pakistan\nTBC speaker from East Africa\nRoxanne Murrell\, Program Officer: Women’s Rights\, Oxfam Canada\nBill Fairbairn\, Program Manager\, Inter Pares\, Canada\nLeah Odle-Benson\, Deputy Director Impact and Learning\, Stephen Lewis Foundation\, Canada\n\nBackground \nLocal organizations – led by and for their communities—are doing the most effective development work in the world. Yet far too little international development funding makes it to them to support their priorities\, growth\, and sustainability. \nInternational cooperation organizations and staff at Global Affairs Canada are collaborating to identify and change policies\, restrictions\, and processes that impede the department’s ability to meaningfully support locally led development. But even with important changes underway\, significant institutional challenges persist. \nWe must continue to advocate around GAC’s funding practices and policies\, and at the same time\, there is more we can do as the international cooperation sector to improve the ways we work. This conversation is an opportunity to share information\, learn from one another and strategize on how we and GAC can best support local organizations and movements. \nAttend here!

What does getting long-term\, flexible support into the hands of community-led organizations and local actors look like in practice? What impact is this having and what are the ongoing challenges funders grapple with? \n\n\n\n\nHost Meg French\, Executive Director\, Stephen Lewis Foundation \nKeynote Address Twesigye Jackson Kaguri\, Founder and CEO\, Nyaka \nPanel \n\nChristine Sow\, President and CEO\, Humentum (moderator)\nMeg French\, Executive Director\, Stephen Lewis Foundation\nVahe Mirikian\, Director for US Policy\, Peace Direct\nWanja Ngure\, Program Manager Grantmaking\, UHAI-EASHRI\nother panelists to be announced\n\nRSVP requested for planning and food purposes \nAccessibility: The building and event room are wheelchair accessible with an elevator to the 10th floor. SUMMARY:Global solidarity to end homophobia\, biphobia\, and transphobia

Strength to Strength brings together diverse perspectives from community-based organizations in East Africa and Canada that are addressing the impacts of homophobia\, biphobia\, and transphobia and intersecting forms of oppression on LGBTIQ2S communities. \nIt is increasingly clear that there are deadly consequences to ignoring the ways in which global pandemics like HIV and COVID-19 thrive on inequalities\, discrimination\, and social and economic marginalization. Our local struggles for health and rights are globally linked\, and we must work together for wellbeing\, health\, and human rights. Join us to hear directly from LGBTIQ2S leaders about the successes and challenges their organizations are experiencing and the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. \nA Q&A will follow the conversation. \n \nHost: Maurice Tomlinson\, Board Member of the Stephen Lewis Foundation \nModerator: Debbie Owusu-Akyeeah\, Director of the Canadian Centre for Gender and Sexual Diversity \nRemarks: Doug Stollery\, President of the Stollery Charitable Foundation \nPanelists: \n\nKennedy Mwendwa\, Project Officer at HAPA Kenya\, Kenya\nAaron Clevis Mbembe\, Associate Director of Policy and Advocacy at Health Development Initiative\, Rwanda\nChristopher Nkambwe\, Founder and Team Leader at African Centre for Refugees in Ontario\, Canada\nRin Lawrence\, Chair of the Edmonton Public Teachers Local 37 Diversity\, Equity\, and Human Rights Committee and Queer-Straight Alliance\, Canada\nTBD\, Youth Leader\, ODE: Remembered Voices\, Canada\n\nIDAHOBIT is an opportunity to celebrate the LGBTIQ2S communities who are at the forefront of human rights movements and join them in calling for an end to homophobia\, biphobia\, and transphobia and intersecting forms of oppression. Register today to take part in this event.  \n \nPartners in Pride \nThe Stephen Lewis Foundation has launched the Partners in Pride campaign to raise $3 million over the next three years to support LGBTIQ organizations in sub-Saharan Africa. By scaling-up funding to our existing partners and extending support to new partners across the region\, the campaign aims to reach 100\,000 people per year. \nOur LGBTIQ grassroots partner organizations are human rights defenders who have been working at the intersections of health and human rights\, contributing to a global movement for LGBTIQ rights for years. Now as they face a surge in human rights violations\, they’re providing vital health and legal support while advocating for their communities. They’ve built extensive peer networks that allow them to reach and support LGBTIQ community members who are most vulnerable to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic\, and to ensure that people living with HIV have the support they need to adhere to treatment during this global crisis. \nFor more information about Partners in Pride\, please contact slfpride@stephenlewisfoundation.org \nwww.stephenlewisfoundation.org/partners-in-pride \nClick here to subscribe to our e-newsletter for updates and future events.
