VIC NEUFELD MENTORSHIP AWARD IN GLOBAL HEALTH

The award will be presented at the CAGH Annual General Meeting held during the Canadian Conference for Global Health 2025.

About the Award

This award honours Dr. Vic Neufeld, Professor Emeritus in the Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University and the founding national coordinator of the Canadian Coalition for Global Health Research, which merged with the Canadian Society of International Health to create the Canadian Association for Global Health.

This award celebrates those who have provided outstanding mentorship to global health students and early-career professionals. It recognizes the critical role mentors play in shaping and fostering the next generation of global health leaders, who are instrumental in driving positive change and advancement in the field.

Criteria:

The person nominating the candidate must be either:

  • A current or previous mentee who has been involved in a mentoring relationship with the candidate for a minimum of one year, or a knowledgeable colleague familiar with the candidate’s dedication to mentoring service.
  • Candidates should have demonstrated commitment to global health mentorship for an extended period, typically exceeding five years. Mentorship can occur in various contexts, such as academia, government, NGOs, or civil society.
  • Nominees should provide evidence of outstanding performance in mentoring, including accessibility, commitment, guidance, assistance in pursuing goals, setting high standards, and facilitating networking.
  • The award will be granted based on the nominee’s commitment to mentees’ growth, sustained mentoring relationships resulting in career/personal development, and valued behaviours, attitudes, and skills. Candidates may receive the award multiple times but not within a five-year period.

Nomination Process

  • Provide a testimonial on the impact of the mentor, descriptions of specific behaviours, examples of mentoring interactions, accomplishments attributed to the mentor, and a statement linking the work influenced by the mentorship. Mentees are encouraged to provide specific examples of goals achieved, projects completed, promotions, grants/awards earned, obstacles overcome, and lessons learned.
  • The mentor’s CV is required.
  • Additional letters or statements of support from colleagues or mentees (past/present) are encouraged.

Nominations will be reviewed and selected by the Vic Neufeld Mentorship Award in Global Health Review Committee. The committee is comprised of members from various professional levels and disciplinary areas, as well as past recipients of the Mentorship Award.
