Who Governs AI? A Trans Feminist Perspective on Who Gets a Say

Join us to explore what AI governance is and how AI is being governed in Canada today. Together, we’ll look at concrete examples such as AI policies, standards, and public consultation processes. Using a trans feminist lens, we will investigate how power, resources, and access shape AI governance systems, where the key limitations are, and explore critical opportunities for improving AI governance in Canada and globally.

By the end of the session, participants will:

– Understand what AI governance means
– Recognize key limitations in current AI governance approaches
– See how power, resources, and access shape AI governance systems, using a trans feminist lens.
– Gain practical ideas for how AI governance processes could be made more equitable and participatory.

This is session is part of our Equity and AI learning series that aims to offers a clear and accessible introduction to key issues at the intersection of AI, ethics, and equity. Through short monthly virtual sessions, participants will learn from guest speakers, explore real examples, and access tools they can apply immediately in their work.

Featuring: Blair Attard-Frost (she/her/they/them) is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Alberta and a Fellow at the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii). Her research applies a trans feminist lens to address challenges of power, participation, and justice in AI governance systems. She teaches students, professionals, executives, public servants, and communities about AI policy & ethics. She creates experimental sci-fi and glitch art that explores frictions between gender, technology, and regulation.
