A second storey of hope: How one school is changing children’s lives in Syria

In the heart of northern rural Aleppo, where dusty winds whisper tales of loss and resilience, stands a modest school built in a place aptly named the Village of Hope. Just a year ago, it was a one-storey building with eight classrooms – a beacon for children in the HCI Village camp who had no other school to turn to. Today, it’s reaching toward the sky – both literally and figuratively.

This is not just a story about bricks and mortar, it’s about children who hadn’t seen the inside of a classroom for nearly two years. They lived far from any educational institution and the very idea of sending children walking for over five kilometers was daunting for their parents. However, thanks to Human Concern International, the reality has transformed and children can now attend school everyday.

The weight of the crisis

More than a decade of conflict in Syria has left behind a trail of crushed cities and broken systems. For children, the toll has been especially devastating. Schools have crumbled, teachers have left or fallen silent, and a generation has teetered on the brink of being lost to illiteracy and trauma. Despite this, it is a country that dares to hope in the face of adversity. A leaf of green, rising from the devastation.

With HCI’s intervention, this hope is visualized through the construction of the school for the families and children of the village. But as the first floor quickly filled beyond capacity, it became clear that the need was abundant. That’s when HCI stepped in once again. On this occasion, building a second storey. And from there, everything changed.

The ripple effect of education

With the second floor completed, the school now welcomes up to 800 students. The students benefit from formal schooling, school supplies, and essential awareness sessions on hygiene, health, and disaster safety.

Children who dropped out are now attending remedial classes. Teachers who once worked under immense stress are receiving psychological support. And as the sun sets on the Hope Village, its newest rooftop catches the light — reflecting the promise of a future where no child is denied an education because of geography, poverty, or crisis.

More than a school

This isn’t a school. It’s a shelter from chaos, a space for healing, a foundation for dignity. It’s proof that with the right support, communities can move from crisis to sustainability – just as HCI’s mission envisions.
