The Government of Canada is strengthening Canada’s place in the world through an approach to international assistance that reflects Canadians’ interests and values. This includes ensuring that Canada’s international assistance is focused on addressing the needs of the world’s poorest and most vulnerable people.
Today, the Department of Finance launched its 2018 consultations seeking Canadians’ views on its contributions to the World Bank Group’s International Development Association, the Multilateral Debt Relief Initiative, and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank.
The Department would also like to hear from Canadians about how it can contribute to enhanced reporting of international assistance, as the Government committed to do in Budget 2018. Additional information about this consultation can be found in the consultation document.

Official Development Assistance plays a critical role in helping the poorest and most vulnerable, promoting gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls, supporting fragile states, and helping to build a more inclusive, peaceful and prosperous world.
In 2017-18, the Department of Finance contributed $536.37 million out of the Government’s total contribution of $5.37 billion for Official Development Assistance.
The Official Development Assistance Accountability Act came into force in 2008. Consulting on disbursements is a statutory requirement of the Act. Every two years, the Department of Finance is required to consult Canadians on its Official Development Assistance contributions.
