Election Night Statement by CanWaCH

Joint statement by Helen Scott, CEO, CanWaCH, and Julia Anderson, COO, CanWaCH

On behalf of CanWaCH, we offer congratulations to the Liberal government and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on their re-election. Over the past four years, we have worked closely with Prime Minister Trudeau and his government to champion the health and rights of women and children around the globe, culminating at Women Deliver 2019 in the announcement of a $1.4B annual investment for ten years. We look forward to continuing to work alongside the government to see this powerful investment for change implemented fully and robustly.

We are proud to have collaborated with the government and Canada’s global health partners to set a collective vision for Canada’s international development health leadership in 2020 and beyond. This is a critical time for Canada to accelerate towards agenda 2030 and to do our part to reach the Sustainable Development Goals. Much has been achieved, but there is still work to do—and that work is a priority for Canadians:

  • 69% of Canadians believe that women and children’s health should be a top priority for Canada’s international development program
  • Half of Canadians think that the amount Canada spends on health-related development aid should increase
  • 8 in 10 Canadians agree that Canada should do its fair share to help developing countries, and 7 in 10 believe that it is our moral obligation to do so
  • The number of Canadians who believe that they have a duty to support the health, education and economic opportunity for the world’s poorest and most marginalized people has increased 21% from 55% four years ago to 76% in 2019

It is clear that Canadians believe in our country’s leadership in global health, and we are excited about working with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his government to achieve even more in 2020 and beyond.
