From Darkness to Hope: Abdul Aziz’s Journey

Abdul Aziz Al Ali is a seven-year-old Syrian orphan living in Akkar, North Lebanon. His family consists of three members. Adulaziz and his family struggle to survive and live far below the minimum standard of living. Their home was an unfinished structure. There was no electricity, no proper bedding, no household tools and no protection from the cold. During the winter, rain would pour inside, drenching the space where they slept. Rats and insects were constant companions in what was meant to be their shelter.

Extreme poverty, compounded in Lebanon by the disruption of health, social and education systems, prevented Abdulaziz from attending school. He lived in isolation, with no friends and no nearby relatives to support him. His extended family remains in Syria, leaving him without anyone to check on him or make him feel safe. Hunger was a daily reality. Often, his meals consisted of only oil and a small amount of Aleppo thyme. Malnutrition and deprivation took a heavy toll on his physical and emotional well-being.

The HCI Child Sponsorship Program (CSP) became the turning point for Abdul Aziz’s life. The program addressed Abdulaziz’s most basic needs, allowing him to continue his education. He returned to school and enrolled in first grade.

The program went further, securing the family a safe and dignified living space, complete with essential electrical and kitchen equipment. For the first time, Abdul Aziz had a real home, offering safety, warmth, and stability.

The impact of sponsorship extended beyond shelter and education. Winter clothing provided through the program protected him from the harsh cold he once endured without cover. These simple yet vital items brought him warmth. They also gave him comfort and a sense of security he had never known before.

The transformation in Abdul Aziz’s life has been remarkable. He has made new friends and attends school every day with joy. He feels safe in his new home. His happiness is visible, and his confidence continues to grow. A recent medical check-up through the CSP program confirmed significant improvement in his physical health. He has gained approximately seven kilograms, bringing him from below the minimum weight to within the normal range.

The sponsorship has been far more than financial support. It has been a true source of care, compassion and hope, particularly meaningful in the absence of his father and the challenges his family continues to face.

The HCI sponsorship has not only transformed Abdul Aziz’s present but has also opened the door to a future filled with promises. The program empowered him to overcome adversity, pursue his dreams, and thrive.
