Highlights from the Summit on Canada’s Global Leadership

At the end of November, the Summit on Canada’s Global Leadership brought together diverse voices across sectors to discuss and analyze the gaps, successes, and opportunities for a balanced approach to policy coherence.

Here are some standout moments from #LeadershipCAN2019

Gender Equality

As the Honourable Karina Gould, Minister of International Development, said in her closing remarks, “Canada is leading the rights agenda, particularly on gender equality”. Gender equality served as an underlying theme throughout the Summit as participants re-committed to continuing the pursuit of gender equality across all areas of global leadership.

As Jacqueline O’Neill, Canada’s Ambassador for Women, Peace, and Security said, “women want to be recognized as sources of knowledge and to be involved in the decision-making process”. At the Summit, CanWaCH sought to do just that in its session on Gender Equality in the Workplace: Turning the Lens Inwards. Participants discussed how Canadian organizations work around the world and how those same feminist values need to be reflected in the way that we work here at home in Canada. Here are some resources from CanWaCH members and partners from the session.

Youth Engagement

Youth engagement was front and center throughout the Summit with the inclusion of 20 bursary recipients, youth voices in plenary sessions and valuable face-to-face time between young leaders and sector leaders.

One of the highlights of the Summit was the Youth Leader & CEO Reception which served as a refreshing break from traditional networking events. Young changemakers and sector leaders came together to listen to engaging Pecha Kucha talks in a space where the power of youth voices was recognized and encouraged.

Global Health Impact

The practical use of open data and how to improve data collection processes in global health work is one of CanWaCH’s favourite topics of discussion. At the Summit, the CanWaCH Metrics Team led a session using practical case studies for how organizations of all sizes can leverage the use of data and information gathering in their day-to-day work.

CanWaCH is dedicated to putting a spotlight on the inspiring and critically important work that members and associates are undertaking around the world through initiatives such as the CanWaCH Project Explorer, Analytics Portal, and Global Health Impact Report.
