Lead on Canada: Canadian leadership must forge on despite UNSC outcome

The United Nations General Assembly has announced that Norway and Ireland will represent the ‘Western Europe and Others Group’ on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). The two nations begin their two-year term starting in 2021.

The Canadian Partnership for Women and Children’s Health (CanWaCH) congratulates the Government of Canada on a hard-fought campaign and we commend its exemplary global leadership in championing human rights and international law. As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to reach communities worldwide, we see how global health and peace are inextricably linked with women, girls and vulnerable populations disproportionately impacted by conflict.

Global cooperation and collaboration is needed now more than ever to uphold and maintain rules-based international orders. We must safeguard hard-fought gains in critical areas such as gender equality, the environment, nutrition and food security. Canada is especially well positioned to lead and galvanize international cooperation to address global issues that impact the health, rights and wellbeing of women and children.

We welcome Canada’s continued commitment to its Feminist International Assistance Policy and look forward to building greater momentum alongside the Government of Canada towards a bolder, stronger future for women and children around the world.
