In the quiet border region of Zakiganj, Bangladesh, where seasonal flooding shapes daily life and villages are separated by long stretches of rural roads, access to education and health care has never been simple. But the determination of families to give their children a better future has always been strong. It was this determination that guided Human Concern International (HCI) as it launched a project designed to strengthen the foundations of learning and well-being in the community.
A new space for students to grow
One of the most visible changes brought by the project is the new third floor at Al Habib Latifiah Complex. The school had long struggled with overcrowded classrooms and limited space, especially as more families sought a safe and structured environment for their children. The new floor has immediately transformed the atmosphere. Bright, ventilated rooms now give students the space they need to concentrate, participate and feel proud of where they study.
Teachers report a noticeable difference. Classrooms are quieter and lessons are smoother. There’s also a sense of relief from having enough space to teach effectively.
For more than 100 boys, a majority from disadvantaged households, this expansion offers something they did not have before: room to learn with dignity.
Bringing health care closer to home
Shortly after the construction was completed, the school’s new floor welcomed the community again, this time as the site of a free health camp. For families who often travel far for even the most basic medical check-ups, having accessible health care within their own community was a meaningful change.
Throughout the day, residents arrived steadily, seeking advice, reassurance and treatment. Children who had been missing classes because of recurring illnesses received proper care. Women found a safe, comfortable setting to address their health concerns. Many elderly residents appreciated the chance to be seen without the stress of long-distance travel. In total, the camp reached nearly 200 people, an unexpected turnout that reflected the great need for these services.

More than a building
What began as a construction project has grown into something broader. The new space now serves not only students but the wider community. It has become a venue where education and health can intersect, where families feel supported, and where the community gathers with purpose.
Most importantly, the project has helped strengthen local confidence. Parents feel reassured that their children are learning in an improved environment. Community members feel seen and supported. And the new facility stands as a shared asset, one that will continue to serve Zakiganj for years to come.
A foundation for what comes next
The changes in Zakiganj reflect what happens when infrastructure and essential services are brought closer to people who need them the most. With enhanced classrooms and renewed access to health care, families now have a stronger footing to support their children’s education and well-being.
For the students studying on the new floor and the residents who received care during the health camp, these improvements are not temporary – they represent long-term opportunities. And for HCI, this project is a reminder of how community-centred initiatives can create lasting impact, even in the most remote areas.
