In 2024, our imperative is clear: every child deserves the chance to survive and thrive.
Across diverse backgrounds, children universally express desires for family togetherness, safety from violence, clean environments, and access to education, all fundamental to their well-being. And, indeed, over the past half-century, significant strides have been made and Canada has been instrumental in driving progress, from initiatives like the Muskoka Initiative to the Charlevoix Declaration.
The progress was evident: under-5 child deaths decreased by more than half thanks in large part to vaccines, and more children than ever before accessed education around the world before the pandemic. This is a triumphant demonstration of what science, community, political commitment, and international cooperation can do.
Yet, despite these efforts, today’s children face daunting challenges, exacerbated by crises ranging from climate change to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Statistics reveal a sobering reality: children comprise more than 50% of those living in extreme poverty, with an estimated 333 million living on less than $2.15 a day. An estimated 70% of 10-year-olds around the world are unable to understand a simple written text., 45 million children under 5 are affected by wasting (the most life-threatening form of malnutrition), and 1 in 5 children are un- or under-vaccinated.
Climate disruptions are further placing children at risk with extreme weather events, water and food insecurity, emerging infectious diseases, and large-scale population migration forcing more than 40% of the world’s children to live in informal settlements.
There is hope, however. Recent breakthroughs in immunization, including a malaria vaccine and efforts against HPV and polio, will be game-changing. Investments in children’s health, education, and development yield long-term dividends, benefiting not only individuals but society as a whole. To accelerate progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), global leaders must prioritize transformative actions.
Results Canada’s year-long campaign underscores the urgency and need to #ReachEveryChild through investments in health, education, and nutrition. Key objectives include removing barriers to healthcare access, addressing the education crisis, responding to malnutrition emergencies, and amplifying children’s voices.
We begin by advocating to the Canadian Government to make the upcoming 2024 Budget #AChildrensBudget. Learn more and find out how you can take part in making this a reality on our website.
Change is within reach through policy reforms, increased investments, and collective commitment to ending preventable deaths. As we navigate these challenges, solidarity and decisive action are imperative. Together, let us seize the opportunity to create a brighter future for every child.
