Global North funders and international NGO actors are increasingly recognizing what community-led organizations have long known: the way that international development is done needs to change to put affected communities in the drivers’ seat.
This Side Event during UNGA 78 and the SDG Summit will explore how shifting power and resources into the hands of local communities isn’t just about what is morally right and it isn’t just about equality in partnerships (although it is both of those things). Resourcing civil society organizations that are led by and for affected communities is essential to realizing the Sustainable Development Goals.
How are funders moving in this direction? What does getting long-term, flexible support into the hands of community-led organizations and local actors look like in practice? What impact is this having and what are the ongoing challenges funders grapple with?
