Neglected Tropical Diseases and WASH, Spotlight on Trachoma

20 March 2023 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

In honor of World Water Day on March 22 and the UN Conference on Water, the Canadian Network for Neglected Tropical Diseases (CNNTD), in partnership with Operation Eyesight Universal and the University of Calgary, Alberta Council for Global Cooperation, highlight Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) as diseases needing equitable access to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) for their prevention and management. NTDs affect over 1.7 billion people (globally, 1 in 5), most of whom live in under-resourced and underserved communities that lack access to water and sanitation and primary health care. Although the scale of NTDs as a public health problem makes the solutions seem daunting, this session shares successes in NTD prevention and treatment globally that have been supported by Canadians within the global health community. One organization doing NTD elimination through global partnership is Operation Eyesight. The provision of clean water, along with other critical efforts, is preventing and supporting the treatment of Trachoma in Kenya, Zambia and Ethiopia. Learn about impact stories, WHO strategies to eliminate Trachoma and other NTDs, and Canada’s contributions towards achieving health for all.
