Board Director – Operation Eyesight Canada

Operation Eyesight Canada – Board Director (Volunteer)

The Operation Eyesight Canada Board of Directors is currently seeking new volunteer board directors.  Operation Eyesight is a Calgary-based international development organization working to prevent blindness and restore sight in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. The organization’s volunteer board directors are responsible for the strategic direction and oversight of the organization, and for maintaining key relationships with groups and individuals that affect Operation Eyesight’s ability to fulfil its mission and vision.

If you a) have experience in not-for-profit and/or the international development sector OR as a senior executive in the private sector, and b) share Operation Eyesight’s values of equity, innovation, global citizenship, compassion and excellence, please contact us. We would like to discuss this opportunity with you.

Directors are elected for a two-year term. The board meets eight times per year, which includes six virtual meetings (held on a weekday morning for approximately two hours) and two in-person meetings per year in Calgary. Directors also participate in at least one sub- committee each.

We strive to foster a culture of diversity, inclusion and gender equity, on the board and throughout the organization.

We are looking for two new directors. Priority consideration will be given to those who have one or more of the following:

  • Previous government relations experience working for an NGO or the Government of Canada
  • Experience as a volunteer or as a professional in Fund Development – Major Gifts and Grants
  • Experience serving on not-for-profit boards with a strong interest in governance and oversight rather than operations

Be part of a global community

As a new board director, you would join a diverse group of about 12 individuals from across Canada, all deeply committed to creating access to affordable, quality eye health care for families and communities across Operation Eyesight’s countries of work. You would also join a global community – of international board members, staff, donors, volunteers, healthcare providers and other supporters – working toward a shared vision of the elimination of avoidable vision loss.

“I am elated to serve on the Operation Eyesight Board. Dealing with some visual impairments myself, I do not take eyesight for granted. I share Operation Eyesight’s values, and I am impressed by its innovative, sustainable and scalable business model.” – Dr. Diane Isabelle, Chair – Innovations & Programmes Committee, Operation Eyesight Canada Board of Directors

“The ability to see leads to better educational opportunities, the ability to contribute to the family’s wellbeing, the empowerment of women, and the coming-together of communities with a common purpose. I’m excited to be a part of this transformational organization!” – Mr. Shaad Oosman, Chair, Operation Eyesight Canada Board of Directors

“As an ophthalmologist, seeing the difference the gift of sight makes in someone’s life is the most rewarding part of my job. I’m excited to be part of a global community that impacts not only the lives of individuals, but entire communities, regions and countries.” – Dr. Fatimah Gilani, Director, Operation Eyesight Canada Board of Directors
