Chief Financial Officer – Calgary

Position Summary

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) at Operation Eyesight (OE) serves as an integral member of OE’s Leadership team providing overall strategic leadership and direction for Operation Eyesight’s Financial, HR, IT & Administrative functions. Through people-first leadership, the CFO ensures operational excellence, regulatory compliance, fiduciary responsibility, financial stability, and continued charitable status. This position plays a pivotal role in ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the organization, driving strategic growth in all the key areas of organization development, and fostering a culture of compliance and accountability.

The CFO provides effective and timely communication of critical financial information and recommendations regarding the financial results and condition of the organization, including relevant trends, forecasts, risks and opportunities to the CEO, the Board, and other senior leaders. The CFO works with staff to develop business and operational plans, maintaining appropriate governance over investment priorities, cost structures and control systems for the organization. This key position will oversee all finance, accounting, internal controls, forecasting, budgeting, treasury, tax, corporate insurance, and administration for Operation Eyesight.

Key Accountabilities

  • Accountable for accurate and timely financial statements (monthly and annually)
  • Lead the development of the annual budget
  • Ensure compliance with the annual budget and financial plans by monitoring actual results, conducting financial projections, and other financial activities as appropriate
  • Oversee and support the full range of financial and accounting functions including reporting and analysis, accounting services, budget planning, treasury management, accounts payable and receivable, payroll and tax, and reviews various service contracts
  • Ensure the accounting of revenues and expenses are performed in an accurate, efficient and timely manner
  • Plan for future financing requirements and stability of OE by initiating and recommending financial arrangements and cost saving measures
  • Provide assistance to the development of business plans and prepare financial forecasting for projects and programs
  • Provide contract administrative services and ensure the OE’s interest is protected
  • Accountable for monitoring the financial health of OEU
  • Provide governance over financial investments including prioritization of processes and criteria, agile decision making and real-time adjustments
  • Responsible for meeting all regulatory and funding agreement reporting deadlines including managing the annual audit process
  • Coordinate external audits, filing of charity information returns, GST rebates, and other government reporting
  • Ensure proper maintenance of accounting records and documentation in compliance with statutory requirements and OE policies
  • Submit periodically key financial statements and reports and support the Treasurer and the Finance, Audit and Risk Management Committee of the Board to fulfil their mandate
  • Supervision of the HR function, including talent acquisition, staff training and development, employee engagement, performance management and succession planning.
  • Provide oversight for the management and maintenance of IT infrastructure, including hardware and software through the organization’s external IT providers

Education/Training/Experience

  • Professional Accountant in good standing (CPA designation preferred)
  • 15+ years of successful professional experience in financial roles with at least 5+ years in a senior financial leadership role
  • Experience in the not-for-profit sector and/or a registered charity preferred
  • Knowledge of finance regulation specific to charities preferred
  • Experience in global organizations preferred
  • Demonstrated track record of sound financial management enabling organizational growth and/or successful rebound from a crisis
  • Experience with leading HR, IT and Administration functions preferred
  • Familiar with procurement, asset management and some business transaction services
  • Demonstrated proficiency with accounting software and other computer software
  • Experience with Salesforce and Great Plains an asset
